>> Introduction to Sashiko and Visible Mending > Come discover the time-honoured Japanese sashiko technique for mending and revitalizing damaged textiles!
Sashiko, which translates as "little stabs," is a traditional Japanese hand-sewing technique that dates back centuries. More than just a method of mending and strengthening the fabric, in modern times, it also reflects the Japanese idea of "mottainai," which means waste not, want not.

>> In this beginner's workshop, you will explore a range of sashiko and hand-sewing methods, learn how to apply patches in a unique way, weave both strengthening and decorative sashiko stitches into your fabric, and master efficient hand-sewing using the sashiko approach. You'll be equipped with the skills to breathe new life into well-loved garments, giving them a distinct flair!

Momus Talks presents artist Joseph Tisiga and critic Merray Gerges in conversation.

This talk will be situated within Tisiga’s current solo exhibition “It was God the whole time,” on view at Bradley Ertaskiran in Montreal on Saturday March 2, 14:00-15:00.

Joseph Tisiga’s work is informed by global histories of colonial violence and witnessing the ongoing dispossession of Indigenous peoples. He begins with fact, then cocoons it with fiction. Doubles dance, surfaces deceive. He cloaks archeological and totemic forms in connotations and allusions, creating a pictorial and psychic plane in which mythologies morph.

The worlds Tisiga creates provoke these questions: What is fabulation’s role in the face of colonial violence? Could fabulation become a tool in the production of a new political reality? And could it liberate marginalized artists from the moral imperative to bear witness?

Tisiga and Gerges, who serves as an Associate Editor for Momus, have been in ongoing dialogue for over a decade, since meeting at Nova Scotia College of Art & Design.

L’artiste considère que la première étape pour favoriser une compréhension de la différence consiste d’abord à être capable d’être ensemble. Salima Punjani est une artiste multisensorielle ancrée dans l’esthétique relationnelle. Le fil conducteur de tout son travail est la création d’environnements qui permettent la réceptivité et la connexion. Ses travaux récents explorent des thèmes tels que les processus d’isolement et de resocialisation liés à la COVID-19, au repos comme résistance à l’injustice systémique et à la manière dont les données médicales peuvent être détournées pour trouver des liens humains plutôt que des anomalies qui nous séparent.

Salima Punjani is a multi-sensory artist whose work is rooted in relational aesthetics. Central to her creations is the aspiration to craft environments that foster receptivity and connection. Her recent projects explore themes such as the dynamics of isolation and resocialization associated with the COVID-19 pandemic; the act of resting as a form of resistance against systemic injustices; and the potential of hijacking medical data to uncover human connections rather than highlighting anomalies that divide us.

Cette présentation de Cindy Dumais sera l’occasion d'explorer le vaste projet ENTRETIENS, développé par l'artiste depuis 2017. Élaboré par chapitre, ce cycle d’oeuvres et d’expositions explore les multiples formes matérielles d’une collection de premiers jets d’auteur·trices québécois·es. Keep in Touch, présenté actuellement au Circa, est un hommage à l’œuvre dramaturgique de Larry Tremblay et constitue le chapitre 2 de ce projet.

Venez chez Daphne pour un court tutoriel de gravure donné par Martin Akwiranoron Loft. Cette démonstration pratique vous permettra de comprendre la méthode d'impression en relief et la possibilité d'imprimer votre propre œuvre d'art. Martin discutera de la sécurité et de l'esthétique et vous obtiendrez un bloc d'impression, des outils de sculpture, du papier à dessin, un crayon et du papier qui lui serviront à réaliser votre œuvre. Vous pouvez participer à cette activité n'importe quand entre 17h et 22h. Nous acceptons les dons pour l'activité.

Martin Akwiranoron Loft est né et a grandi à Kahnawake, en territoire Mohawk. Il est un artiste professionnel depuis plus de 30 ans. Il est photographe, graveur et artisan. Il est également membre fondateur de l’Association des photographes Inuits et Indiens (NIIPA, 1985-2000), une organisation d’artistes autochtones influents qui a présenté “Visions”, la première conférence internationale et exposition itinérante autochtone. Loft a exposé ses photographies, son artisanat traditionnel et ses gravures à l’échelle nationale et internationale, notamment au Musée national des Indiens d’Amérique, au Musée des civilisations, au Musée royal de l’Ontario, au Musée indien Iroquois, au Musée Mashantucket Pequot, au Musée McCord et au Centre national d’art et d’exposition de la République fédérale d’Allemagne, qui a récemment accueilli l’exposition On the Paths of Iroquois.

«Le plateau des miroirs» est une soirée de performances musicales et sonores organisée en marge de l’exposition «Rirkrit Tiravanija: JOUEZ/PLAY», dans le cadre de la 21e édition de la Nuit blanche à Montréal.

Les personnes désirant un temps d'introspection et de détente sont invitées à venir découvrir des prestations de musique ambiante présentées en continu dans l’œuvre «untitled 1996 (rehearsal studio no. 6)» de Rirkrit Tiravanija. L’installation reproduit une salle de répétition où Tiravanija et ses ami·e·s se retrouvaient pour jouer de la musique.

Pour l’occasion, l’espace accueillant l’œuvre deviendra un cocon où le public pourra s’assoupir et planer. Paysages sonores qui accompagnent vos pensées, grignotines et tisanes seront aux rendez-vous. Vous êtes invité·e·s à apporter oreillers, doudous et accessoires confortables de votre choix.

“The Plateaux of Mirror is an evening of sonic and musical performances organized in conjunction with the exhibition “Rirkrit Tiravanija: JOUEZ/PLAY,” as part of Nuit blanche à Montréal’s 21st edition.

People seeking out a moment of rest and introspection are invited to discover ambient and drone performances presented continuously in Rirkrit Tiravanija’s artwork “untitled 1996 (rehearsal studio no. 6).” This installation recreates a rehearsal room where Tiravanija and his friends would meet up to play music.

For the occasion, the gallery that hosts the artwork will become a cocoon where the audience can drift off and nap. Sonic landscapes, snacks, and herbal tea will be provided. We invite you to bring pillows, blankets, and any comfy accessories you like.
