The FOFA Gallery is excited to invite you to celebrate the closure of their two summer exhibitions!

- On view in the Main Space from July 22nd to September 6th, 2024

𝘱𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘳_𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬.𝘥𝘰𝘤 is an experimental exhibition that explores the intersections of sustainability, arts administration, and the materiality of labour itself with in-situ artworks, a functioning papermaking studio, demonstrations, contributions and workshops by Eli Bjedov-Stanković, Joé Côté-R, María Andreína Escalona De Abreu, maya rae oppenheimer, Jason Sikoak, Geneviève Wallen, Pierina Corzo-Valero, Céline Bureau Residency, Concordia University Centre for Creative Reuse (CUCCR), Concordia’s Fibres & Material Practices Department, and Recycla (formerly CP3, Concordia Precious Plastic Project). Conceived as a temporary studio space, paper_work.doc is guided by experimentation, trust, and collaboration as we, the artists and contributors, create in-situ works for the FOFA Gallery. As the culmination of her curatorial residency at the FOFA Gallery, Escalona De Abreu wishes to delve into the question: “What sustains an exhibition?”

𝘛𝘰𝘰 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦 inhabits the York Vitrines and includes artworks by Adam Basanta, Ari Bayuaji, Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka, and Kelly Jazvac. Curated by FOFA Gallery’s Director Nicole Burisch, the exhibition brings together four artists who incorporate repurposed materials or scraps, proposing new ways to value what is usually considered waste. Each of the works presented here intervenes at a distinct moment into the usual cycle of production-consumption-disposal, rethinking the very idea that anything can be thrown ‘away.’ Using hands-on processes that bring care and attention to the materials they use, together they ask us to think more carefully and more creatively about the resources and systems we rely on.

𝘛𝘳𝘰𝘱 𝘣𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘰𝘶𝘳 ê𝘵𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘢𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘭𝘭é occupe les Vitrines York et inclut des œuvres d’Adam Basanta, Ari Bayuaji, Kelly Jazvac et Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka. Commissariée par Nicole Burisch, Directrice de la Galerie FOFA, l'exposition réunit quatre artistes qui intègrent des matériaux réutilisés ou des retailles, proposant de nouvelles façons de valoriser ce qui est habituellement considéré comme étant des déchets. Chacune des œuvres présentées intervient à un moment précis dans le cycle habituel de production-consommation-élimination remettant en question l'idée même que l’on peut se ‘débarrasser’ de tout. En utilisant des procédés pratiques qui apportent soin et attention aux matériaux qu'iels utilisent, iels nous invitent à réfléchir de manière plus attentive et plus créative aux ressources et aux systèmes dont nous dépendons.

L’exposition Gyre dévoile le travail intuitif et innovateur de l’artiste montréalaise Catherine Morin. Elle se plaît à prendre refuge dans l’acte de peindre ; elle y trouve une solitude réconfortante, prêtant à son imaginaire un élan créatif sincère et sans mesure.

Dans ses œuvres, Morin adapte le symbole de l’ouroboros, traditionnellement représenté par un serpent se mordant la queue, a des thèmes plus modernes. Elle porte également une curiosité grandissante vis-à-vis la céramique, d’où son illustration dans certains de ses tableaux.

The exhibition “Gyre”, reveals the intuitive and innovative work of Montreal artist Catherine Morin. She enjoys taking refuge in the act of painting; finding a comforting solitude in it and lending her imagination a sincere and boundless creative impetus.

In her works, Morin adapts the symbol of the ouroboros, traditionally represented by a snake eating its tail, to more modern themes. She has also developed a growing curiosity towards ceramics, which she describes in many of her recent paintings.

Ce sera la dernière journée de l'année où la rue Mont-Royal appartiendra aux piétons entre St-Denis et Fullum. Quant à la partie à l'ouest de Saint-Denis, elle retournera aux voitures après le 18 octobre.

𝐏𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐪𝐮𝐨𝐢 𝐜𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐞?
Marcher ne devrait pas être considéré comme une activité estivale seulement! Le mouvement pour des rues piétonnes à l'année est déjà bien entamé à Montréal, surtout au centre-ville et dans le Vieux Montréal avec les annonces pour la rue Saint-Paul et la place Jacques-Cartier notamment. Cette demande nous semble la prochaine étape logique pour l'avenue Mont-Royal.

Venez rencontrer l’artiste, prendre part à une activité de création liée au projet, et découvrir les résultats de quatre mois d’ateliers et de conversations autour de l’aménagement urbain. L’exposition Gyre dévoile le travail intuitif et innovateur de l’artiste montréalaise Catherine Morin. Elle se plaît à prendre refuge dans l’acte de peindre ; elle y trouve une solitude réconfortante, prêtant à son imaginaire un élan créatif sincère et sans mesure.

Dans ses œuvres, Morin adapte le symbole de l’ouroboros, traditionnellement représenté par un serpent se mordant la queue, a des thèmes plus modernes. Elle porte également une curiosité grandissante vis-à-vis la céramique, d’où son illustration dans certains de ses tableaux.

The exhibition “Gyre”, reveals the intuitive and innovative work of Montreal artist Catherine Morin. She enjoys taking refuge in the act of painting; finding a comforting solitude in it and lending her imagination a sincere and boundless creative impetus.

In her works, Morin adapts the symbol of the ouroboros, traditionally represented by a snake eating its tail, to more modern themes. She has also developed a growing curiosity towards ceramics, which she describes in many of her recent paintings.

𝘱𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘳_𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬.𝘥𝘰𝘤 is an experimental exhibition that explores the intersections of sustainability, arts administration, and the materiality of labour itself with in-situ artworks, a functioning papermaking studio, demonstrations, contributions and workshops by Eli Bjedov-Stanković, Joé Côté-R, María Andreína Escalona De Abreu, maya rae oppenheimer, Jason Sikoak, Geneviève Wallen, Pierina Corzo-Valero, Céline Bureau Residency, Concordia University Centre for Creative Reuse (CUCCR), Concordia’s Fibres & Material Practices Department, and Recycla (formerly CP3, Concordia Precious Plastic Project). Conceived as a temporary studio space, paper_work.doc is guided by experimentation, trust, and collaboration as we, the artists and contributors, create in-situ works for the FOFA Gallery. As the culmination of her curatorial residency at the FOFA Gallery, Escalona De Abreu wishes to delve into the question: “What sustains an exhibition?”

𝘛𝘰𝘰 𝘎𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦 inhabits the York Vitrines and includes artworks by Adam Basanta, Ari Bayuaji, Alexa Kumiko Hatanaka, and Kelly Jazvac. Curated by FOFA Gallery’s Director Nicole Burisch, the exhibition brings together four artists who incorporate repurposed materials or scraps, proposing new ways to value what is usually considered waste. Each of the works presented here intervenes at a distinct moment into the usual cycle of production-consumption-disposal, rethinking the very idea that anything can be thrown ‘away.’ Using hands-on processes that bring care and attention to the materials they use, together they ask us to think more carefully and more creatively about the resources and systems we rely on.

Commissariée par Nicole Burisch, Directrice de la Galerie FOFA, l'exposition réunit quatre artistes qui intègrent des matériaux réutilisés ou des retailles, proposant de nouvelles façons de valoriser ce qui est habituellement considéré comme étant des déchets. Chacune des œuvres présentées intervient à un moment précis dans le cycle habituel de production-consommation-élimination remettant en question l'idée même que l’on peut se ‘débarrasser’ de tout. En utilisant des procédés pratiques qui apportent soin et attention aux matériaux qu'iels utilisent, iels nous invitent à réfléchir de manière plus attentive et plus créative aux ressources et aux systèmes dont nous dépendons.

Join us in store with Judy LeBlanc, Anita Anand and Kitty Hoffman for readings from their books and a conversation about their work, discussing how these three authors draw from cultural and family history to write narratives that overlap in their themes of loss and identity.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Anita Anand is a writer and literary translator from Montreal. Her novel A Convergence of Solitudes won a 2023 Ippy (Independent Publishers’) gold medal, was nominated for the 2023 Ontario Library Association’s Evergreen Award, and was a finalist for the 2022 Paragraphe Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction and a Foreword Indies Award. She is also the author of Swing in the House and Other Stories, which won the 2015 QWF Concordia University First Book Prize. Her translation of Nirliit was nominated for the John Glasscoe Award in 2018. Anand has also translated two books by Fanie Demeules, known in English as Lightness and Mukbang. As the Andes Disappeared, her translation of Là où je me terre by the late Caroline Dawson, was on the shortlist for the 2024 Amazon Canada First Novel Award.

Kitty Hoffman’s award-winning writing has appeared in literary anthologies and journals including The New Quarterly, Tablet, Lilith, Prism, Malahat Review, and Grain. She recently won Tablet’s First personal contest and was named to Lilith’s New Forty. She is completing a book of literary nonfiction about her medieval Provencal ancestor, the father of European kabbalah, and growing up with Holocaust survivor parents. Conceived in a refugee camp in Germany, born in Norway, and raised in Montreal, she has a deep interest in identity, exile, and spirit.

Judy LeBlanc is a writer from Fanny Bay, BC. Several of her stories and essays have been published in Canadian literary journals. The Promise of Water, a collection of short stories, published in 2017 was followed by a novel, The Broken Heart of Winter. Permission to Land, a memoir-in-essays, published in 2024, explores her European/Coast Salish ancestry on her mother’s side.

Pour célébrer la sortie du nouvel album de Jon Hopkins, RITUAL, rejoignez-nous pour une expérience audio spatial dans l’espace de concert du Centre PHI le 5 septembre. Cette célébration se poursuivra avec des séances d’écoute en petits groupes dans notre salle d'écoute, Habitat Sonore, du 6 au 8 septembre et du 13 au 15 septembre.

Une semaine après sa sortie officielle, le public aura l'occasion de découvrir le prochain album de Jon Hopkins, RITUAL (Domino Record), dans son intégralité au Centre PHI.

Depuis 2016, Pitchblack Playback organise des séances d'écoute d'albums dans l'obscurité à travers le monde, dans des cinémas et d'autres espaces sonores exceptionnels. Leurs événements visent à créer un espace où la musique peut être appréciée en haute qualité sans distraction, et ont été suivis par quelque 30 000 personnes à ce jour.

🔊 SPATIAL AUDIO EXPERIENCE IN CENTRE PHI'S SHOW VENUE 🔊

To celebrate the release of Jon Hopkins’ new album RITUAL, join us for a spatial audio experience in the PHI Centre’s concert venue on September 5. The celebration will then continue with small group listening sessions in our Habitat Sonore: Listening room from September 6 to 8 and September 13 to 15.

A week after its official release, audiences are being given the opportunity to experience Jon Hopkins’ forthcoming album RITUAL(Domino Record Label) in its entirety at the PHI Centre.

Pitchblack Playback have hosted album listening sessions in the dark around the world since 2016 in cinemas and in other great sound spaces. Their events seek to create a space where music can be enjoyed in high quality with no distractions, and have been attended by some 30,000 people to date.
