Montreal Cultural Calendar

Dans le cadre du programme de résidence de recherche, Artexte invite trois chercheur.e.s (individus ou collectifs) de toutes pratiques en art contemporain à parcourir les ressources documentaires pour explorer sa collection afin d’approfondir un sujet en particulier. Les projets de résidence retenus sont sélectionnés pour les liens directs qu’ils entretiennent avec la collection et la mission institutionnelle d’Artexte, tout en démontrant une sensibilité aux intérêts et aux besoins en recherche de la communauté artistique locale et nationale. Artexte priorise les projets qui explorent et valorisent des pratiques et des thématiques artistiques demandant plus d’attention par l’histoire de l’art canadien et le milieu artistique national, ainsi que des projets qui dévoilent et contribuent à l’accessibilité de la documentation insoupçonnée et méconnue de la collection.

Artexte offre aux résident.e.s un soutien à la recherche, ainsi qu’un espace de travail muni d’outils (ordinateur, numériseur et photocopieur). Une résidence varie entre un et trois mois, selon les besoins du projet. Les résident·es sont également invité·es à partager l’état de leur recherche lors d’une présentation publique ou d’une entrevue publiée en fin de parcours sur le site d’Artexte. Artexte accorde un cachet total de 2 000 $ aux résident·es sélectionné·es (individus ou collectifs).

As part of its research residency program, Artexte invites three researchers (individuals and/or collectives) from all contemporary art disciplines to explore the collection’s documentary resources and deepen their research on a particular topic. Projects will be selected for their direct connection to the Artexte collection and institutional mission, while also demonstrating sensitivity towards the research interests and needs of the local and national art communities. Artexte prioritizes research projects that explore and value artistic practices and themes requiring more attention in Canadian art history and within art communities nationally, as well as projects that reveal and contribute to the accessibility of little-known documents in the collection.

Artexte is committed to providing residents with research support and a workspace equipped with tools (computer, scanner, photocopier). A research residency spans from one to three months, depending on the needs of each project. Residents are also invited to present their research during a public presentation or an interview published on our website at the end of their residency. Artexte grants a total fee of $2,000 to selected residents (individuals or collectives).

Shot over the last four years, as Lebanon has faced an interrupted revolution, a pandemic, an unprecedented financial crisis and the devastating explosion that destroyed half of Beirut, Diaries from Lebanon shows the country’s struggle to escape the vice-grip of warlords through the eyes of its people. Feminist Joumana Haddad, a leading figure of civil society, comes within an inch of winning the 2018 parliamentary elections, but is defeated by corruption. Perla Joe Maalouli, a young activist unable to find her place in society, suddenly becomes the face of the 2019 revolution as citizens demand electricity, water and the dissolution of the government. Meanwhile, Georges Moufarej, a veteran of the Lebanese Civil War, is thoroughly convinced he can still save the nation. Moufarej is a symbol of the past; Haddad, the present; and Maalouli the future in this diary of dissent in which civilians using memory as a tool of empowerment are agents of change from within.

Tourné au cours des quatre dernières années, alors que le Liban a traversé une révolution interrompue, une pandémie, une crise financière sans précédent et l'explosion dévastatrice qui a détruit la moitié de Beyrouth, Diaries from Lebanon montre la lutte du pays pour échapper à l'emprise des seigneurs de guerre à travers les yeux de son peuple. Paying for It was the most talked-about and controversial graphic novel of 2011, a critical success so innovative and complex that it received two rave reviews in The New York Times. Chester Brown's eloquent, spare artwork stands out in this new paperback edition, tied to the release of the film adaptation co-written and directed by Sook-Yin Lee, Brown’s longtime friend and the director of Year of the Carnivore and Octavio is Dead!

Paying for It offers an entirely unvarnished exploration of sex work through Brown’s own life story, showing him as a timid john who rides his bike to his escorts, wonders how to tip so as not to offend, and reads Dan Savage for advice. The book demystifies an experience that is so often sensationalized, revealing a world of online reviews, seemingly willing participants, and clean apartments devoid of clichéd street corners, drugs, or pimps. In it, Brown combines the personal and sexual aspects of his autobiographical work (I Never Liked You, The Playboy) with the polemical drive of Louis Riel, as he explores one of the most hotly debated issues in the world and advocates for the importance of legalizing sex work.

Nadine Altounji, Montréalaise d’origine syrienne, nous entraîne dans un voyage musical envoûtant, mêlant les influences afro-péruviennes et syriennes. À travers ses EP *The Stories that Tie Us to Trees Vol.1* et *Enracinées dans l’Histoire Vol.2*, elle fusionne son oud et sa guitare avec la darbouka, le cajón, ainsi que des nuances folk et pop.

Le titre de son spectacle et de son dernier single, *Zayt el oud*, signifie « l’huile du oud ». Cette métaphore symbolise la musique extraite de son oud, comme l’huile des olives, et rend hommage à ses racines levantines.
