PUBLIC LECTURE
Title : Mathematics that resonates

Abstract : What do the tones of a cello have to do with those annoying hot spots when you microwave some food? What does noise reduction in a car share in common with designing a fusion reactor? To a mathematician, these are all examples of the fundamental notion of 'resonances': the mathematical concepts of eigenvalues and eigenvectors, which describe how systems respond to periodic forces. Through surprising and perhaps unusual examples, we will see how mathematics is used to find and optimize resonances in fields as diverse as acoustics, engineering, and quantum mechanics. We will also uncover cases where resonance is something to be avoided-whether in the design of buildings, spacecraft, or even cognac glasses. Along the way, we will catch glimpses of the mathematical techniques that shape our understanding of the world, from linear algebra to spectral theory. Whether you are a mathematician or simply curious about the hidden structures behind sound and motion, this talk will reveal some mathematics that truly resonates.

Pas d'inscription, pas de rendez vous, simplement vous présenter avec votre objet à réparer, c'est premier·ère arrivé·e premier·ère servi·e. Il pourrait y avoir de l'attente si l'achalandage est important.

400m à l'est du métro Beaubien (6 min à pied).
Stationnement municipal (payant) entre les rues Boyer et Saint-André juste au sud de St-Zotique, à 5 min à pied.

- Couture: poches trouées, coutures défaites, boutons arrachés, ourlets et autres réparations mineures sur chandails, chemises, robes, jeans... (mais nous ne réparons pas les fermetures éclair) **SVP s'assurer de la propreté des vêtements que vous apportez**

ATTENTION : Le local n'est pas encore entièrement accessible à toustes, les travaux étant toujours en cours. Pour le moment, il y a une série d'escaliers extérieurs à monter, puis un étage d'escaliers à descendre. Un accès direct et universel à la salle est prévu pour l'automne 2024. En attendant, nous avons un accès avec des rampes détachables/mobiles pour fauteuils roulants ainsi qu’une toilette accessible. Pour avoir accès à ce service, veuillez contacter edp@atse-rpp.org assez d’avance avant l’événement pour qu’on puisse coordonner l’accès! Puisque ce sont des rampes amovibles, l’accès tente de respecter les normes d’accessibilité universelle, mais nous ne pouvons pas garantir un accès 100% aux normes. Nous vous enverrons des photos de l’installation pour votre approbation. Nous vous prions de nous excuser pour ce désagrément, nous faisons de notre mieux avec cette solution temporaire!

During this lecture you will be listening, feeling, humming, and then finally walking around the immediate area, putting your newfound knowledge and skills to good use. Your airy guide and instructor, Tricia Enns (she/they), has a building envelope engineer, but today their work explores alternative, overlooked, and playful methods of understanding and storying urban spaces. Enns has presented work and facilitated workshops at numerous events and spaces such as POP Montreal (QC, 2023), the biannual HASTAC conference (Brooklyn, NY, 2023), and the Bath Art Fringe Festival (Bath, GB, 2022).
