Join us for the launch of Chanel Sutherland's book, Layaway Child. The author will be joined for a discussion with H. Nigel Thomas. Layaway Child is a luminous debut short story collection by award-winning writer Chanel Sutherland that explores the emotional landscapes of Caribbean families fractured by migration, especially the harrowing yet resilient journeys of Black girls and women. In lyrical, linked stories, Sutherland traces the lives of mothers working abroad as housekeepers and nannies, and the children they left behind. From lush island childhoods marked by absence and community, to the cold, alienating spaces of Canadian cities, Layaway Child captures the complexity of growing up between worlds. A mother, newly arrived in Montreal, is kept from speaking to her daughters by her own mother's misguided attempt to help her let go of home. A schoolgirl becomes a spectacle under the gaze of white classmates. Sutherland brings deep compassion and sharp insight to each moment. Chanel Sutherland is a Vincentian Canadian writer who won the 2021 CBC Nonfiction Prize and the 2022 CBC Short Story Prize and was named one of CBC Books 30 Writers to Watch in 2022. She was also the overall winner of the 2025 Commonwealth Short Story Prize. H. Nigel Thomas came to Canada from St Vincent and the Grenadines in 1968 and is a retired professor of U.S. literature, author of numerous essays and fifteen books, and a co-founder of Lectures Logos Readings. His fiction focuses on queer themes, parent-child relationships in Canada and the Caribbean. He has received many awards, including the 2022 Canada Council John Molson Prize for the Arts. Masks are not required, but will be provided for free at the door. For elevator access, please contact us at least a day in advance of the event.

Pick a Piper
Pick a Piper is a Toronto-based electronica duo consisting of longtime Caribou touring drummer Brad Weber and vocalist/songwriter Sophia Alexandra. Their music pairs catchy, ethereal vocals with warm synths, upbeat percussion, and a distinctive sense of sound design that feels both grounded and vulnerable.

Their new album, Dandelion, explores how we exist in the space between opposing feelings while calling for resilience and the courage to recognize that growth is possible and inherently beautiful, even in life’s most difficult experiences. The record employs skippy beats, bass-heavy kicks, hearty subs, hyperactive percussion, and woozy synths — all within a lovingly human-curated feel. Dandelion is out now on Toronto imprint Halocline Trance.

The duo’s live show is an intoxicating blend of vibrant physicality and immersive lights and visuals, creating an experience that is both danceable and hypnotic. Pulsing with momentum, vocally driven and haunting, it radiates a charisma that unites the band and audience in cathartic release.

Pick a Piper has toured across Europe, the US, Canada, Guatemala, and Colombia, and has shared the bill with acts such as Bonobo, Gold Panda, Blue Hawaii, Do Make Say Think, Ghetto Kumbe, Rich Aucoin, Braids, and Factory Floor.

Explores the social transformations associated with digital creativity, in a context where immersive technologies (virtual reality, augmented reality, 360° immersive installations, etc.), video games (commercial, experimental, artistic, etc.), and special effects (animation, compositing, 3D, etc.) occupy an increasingly central place in our cultural practices, imaginaries, and ways of life. Research creation provides a privileged framework for rethinking digital creativity and its social impacts. It offers a space where creative practices become modes of analysis, where works function as critical devices, and where processes themselves reveal the socio technical dynamics shaping our digital environments. The symposium is open to the public. Hybrid. Bilingual. Organized by the Chaire de recherche en économie créative et mieux-être (CREAT), in collaboration with the Hexagram Network, and is presented as part of the 2026 Interdisciplinary Encounters.

L’exposition interroge les enjeux de la construction urbaine à travers l’approche d’Álvaro Siza à la ville, marquée par le respect et la compréhension du lieu, de sa forme, de son histoire et de son existence. Juxtaposant du matériel issu des archives de Siza, données au CCA et de la documentation en provenance de photographes, d’architectes et d’historiens gravitant autour de l’architecte et de ses projets urbains, l’exposition révèle les différentes échelles de la ville, ses textures, ses visages et sa complexité.

L’exposition sera accessible à partir de 17h. À 18h, dans le Théâtre Paul-Desmarais, Giovanna Borasi, commissaire de l’exposition, introduira le projet. La soirée se conclura par une célébration dans la maison Shaughnessy.

Le nombre de places étant limité dans le théâtre, il est recommandé de s’inscrire pour assister à la conférence.

Join us on Thursday 21 May for the opening of The fortune of the city is that it has never been perfect. The exhibition explores the challenges of urban development through Álvaro Siza’s approach to the city, characterized by respect for and an understanding of a place, its shape, its embodied history, and its life. By juxtaposing material from Siza’s archives, donated to the CCA with documentation from photographers, architects, and historians associated with the architect and his urban projects, the exhibition reveals the city’s various scales, textures, faces, and complexity.

The exhibition opens at 5pm. At 6pm in the Paul-Desmarais Theatre, Giovanna Borasi, curator of the exhibition, will present the project. The evening concludes with a celebration in the Shaughnessy House.

As space is limited in the theatre, registration is recommended if you would like to attend the lecture.

Leah Temper, CAPE - How AI is impacting information integrity and how media work is changing, with the example of mis- and disinformation on climate change

Speaker Craig Kaplan (University of Waterloo) discusses deep questions in tiling theory, including Heesch's problem (how many times a non-tiler may be surrounded by copies of itself), the isohedral number problem (how many transitivity classes a shape may force upon its periodic tilings), and the einstein problem (a single shape forced to tile non-periodically). Discussion of mathematical and computational research and generalizations to multiple shapes.
