For this New Moon Deep Listening Weekend, three certified Deep Listening facilitators - Ayelet Rose Gottlieb, Kathy Kennedy, and Katie Down - offer a rich series of experiences inspired by the work of feminist composer Pauline Oliveros.
This two-day, in-person workshop, preceded by an online introduction and a concert, invites participants to reconnect with their voices, bodies, and listening awareness through Deep Listening practices, vocal improvisation, sound walks, guided meditations, and free writing. No prior experience with Deep Listening or music is required—only curiosity and openness.
What Is Deep Listening?
Deep Listening is a practice developed by feminist composer Pauline Oliveros that cultivates heightened awareness of sound, self, and environment. Through simple, often playful practices, including text scores (short written instructions that invite collective attention and sound-making), participants are encouraged to listen deeply to themselves, others, and the world.

Your Facilitators:
Katie Down is a New York–based sound artist, flutist, composer, music psychotherapist, and certified Deep Listening facilitator. Her work spans sound art, free improvisation, folk, jazz, and experimental music, using both traditional and found-object instruments. Katie has created sound scores for theatre, dance, and film, earning Drama Desk nominations and a Connecticut Critics Circle Award. She has taught music therapy at SUNY and is a frequent guest lecturer at NYU, Vassar, and the School of Visual Arts.

Kathy Kennedy is a Montreal-based sound artist with training in visual art and classical voice. Her practice explores voice, technology, and public space through telephony, radio, and large-scale participatory works. She is a founder of Studio XX (now Ada-X) and the women’s choral ensemble Choeur Maha. Kathy teaches music at Concordia University and regularly leads workshops on listening, acoustic ecology, and vocal improvisation.

Jerusalem-born, Montreal-based vocalist Ayelet Rose Gottlieb is an international performer and composer whose work blends jazz, Middle Eastern and Jewish music, contemporary composition, and conceptual improvisation. Her recent recording with Dream Keepers - DUST - is currently a finalist for the Opus Prize for “Album of the Year” in the World Music category.

Training event at the end of a day-long event focused on learning various skills. The space is behind the main building so you need to walk outside to the left of the main building that faces the street until you see the sign for 'Recyborg'. This event will be similar to the other ones but it would be helpful to brush up on your skills before our spring campaign begins even if you've come before. This may be the last one before we begin doing the real grafting in May. There will be regular meetups throughout May and June but the plan is for none of them to be focused on learning how to do the technique, discussing the concept of guerrilla grafting, the reasons for doing it, etc. Having said that, if you fail to come to even a single training event, you are still welcome at the events in May and June.

Many, Many Machine Agencies' Writing Workshop. AI Chantier of the Hexagram Network brings together maker-thinkers whose work spans machine learning, interaction design, and experience design, to create a community of practice through a publication process. Prompting potential contributors with an unusual format, Many, Many Machine Agencies asks for recipes, instructions, or games that centre the problem of agency and interaction and the importance of new kinds of encounters with machines. This edited collection is indeed a kind of a cookbook for engaging critically with machines, and as such, we take inspiration from celebrated cookbook authors, like MFK Fisher, who provide recipes and instructions for dishes, while embedding them in a broader biographical and cultural narrative. This cookout session invites contributors to the AI Chantier publication drive to: Learn more about the recipe methodology and its relevance for engaging with machine agencies and AI, To talk about their writing project (share ingredients) and get feedback, Get a clearer picture about what the publishing process will look like. Prospective authors and those curious about the project are invited to participate. The Friends of the McGill Libraries and Blue Metropolis Literary Festival are delighted to present the 2026 Hugh MacLennan Lecture featuring Maria Reva, author of fiction and opera libretti.

Maria Reva's debut novel, Endling, was winner of the 2025 Atwood Gibson Writers' Trust Fiction Prize, longlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize, a finalist for the 2025 Governor General's Literary Award for fiction, nominated for the 2026 Dublin Literary Award, and longlisted for the 2026 Climate Fiction Prize. It was named a best book of 2025 by The Globe and Mail, New Yorker, Publishers Weekly, The Guardian, and many others. She won a National Magazine Award in 2019 and was a finalist for the 2020 Atwood Gibson Writers' Trust Fiction Prize for her debut short story collection, Good Citizens Need Not Fear. Maria Reva's writing has appeared in The Atlantic, McSweeney's, The Wall Street Journal, Granta, The Best American Short Stories, and elsewhere. She was born in Ukraine and grew up in British Columbia, where she now lives.

The evening will feature a conversation between Maria Reva and Allan Hepburn, James McGill Professor of Twentieth-Century Literature at McGill University. Professor Hepburn's research focuses on the novel - British, American, Irish, Canadian. His areas of interest include modernism; contemporary fiction, twentieth-century fiction, and aesthetics.

Books are on sale online through Paragraphe Bookstore. Audience members who bring their own book to the event may have it signed by Maria Reva after the lecture.

Join us in store for poetry readings from Stephanie Bolster, Ian Pople, and Derek Webster! Stephanie Bolster's latest book of poetry, Long Exposure, began as an exploration of Robert Polidori's photographs of New Orleans and Chernobyl. Her first book, White Stone: The Alice Poems, won the Governor General's Award and the Gerald Lampert Award and was translated into French. She teaches creative writing at Concordia. Ian Pople's poems have been published in Canada in Fiddlehead and Antigonish Review, the United States in Poetry, Plume, Subtropics and in the UK in London Review of Books, Manchester Review, Poetry Review and Times Literary Supplement. His chapbook, Spillway, was published by Anstruther in Toronto in 2020. Derek Webster's first collection of poems, Mockingbird, was a finalist for the Gerald Lampert Award, and his second collection, National Animal, won the 2024 A.M. Klein Prize for Poetry. The third workshop of the 'Reimagining Research' Spring Workshop Series. This workshop will allow participants to re-imagine and transform photographs, digital images and other works through Polaroid emulsion lifts. Exploring the materiality of film and photographic practice, participants will work directly with the image of their choosing, lifting, folding, stretching and tearing it. The process of emulsion lifting briefly reduces the image to a ghostly film to then be bonded to another material such as paper, cardboard, or fabric. This physical manipulation of imagery provides a framework to discuss transparencies/opacities of identity and selfhood, thinking through ideas of disclosure and (mis)recognition. Participants are invited to bring pre-existing digital images that can be printed on Polaroid film, or to take photos on site to experiment with the process. Spaces are limited. This workshop explores the relationship between scents, 3D digital creation, and memory. Participants are invited to interact with different smells and use creative writing as a springboard to "translate" these scents into 3D digital sculptures, either by digitizing clay models or by using the Nomad app on an iPad. These sculptures become archival manifestations of place and smell, whilst simultaneously testifying to the subjectivity and mutability of memory. Join us for our next Translation Book Club meeting to discuss Season of Migration to the North, written by Tayeb Salih and translated by Denys Johnson-Davies. After years of study in Europe, the young narrator returns to his village along the Nile in the Sudan in the 1960s. He discovers a stranger among the familiar faces of childhood—the enigmatic Mustafa Sa'eed. Mustafa tells him the story of his own years in London, of his brilliant career as an economist, and of the series of fraught and deadly relationships with European women that led to a terrible public reckoning. Season of Migration to the North is a rich and sensual work of deep honesty and incandescent lyricism. In 2001 it was selected by a panel of Arab writers and critics as the most important Arab novel of the twentieth century. Masks are not required, but will be provided for free at the door. Join us in store for poetry readings from Isabella Wang, Christina Shah and Misha Solomon, hosted by Sarah Wolfson! Isabella Wang is the author of Pebble Swing (Nightwood Editions, 2021), a finalist for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize, and the chapbook On Forgetting a Language (Baseline Press, 2019). Her poetry and prose have appeared in over thirty literary journals and five anthologies. She directs her own non-profit editing and mentorship program, Revise-Revision Street, and lives in New Westminster, BC. Christina Shah lives in New Westminster and works in heavy industry. Her poetry has appeared in numerous Canadian literary journals and has been shortlisted for the Fiddlehead's 2021 Ralph Gustafson Poetry Prize and has appeared in Best Canadian Poetry 2023. She is one-fifth of the Harbour Centre 5 poetry collective. if: prey, then: huntress is her first full-length poetry collection. Misha Solomon is a homosexual poet in and of Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. He is the author of two chapbooks, Full Sentences (Turret House Press, 2022) and FLORALS (above/ground press, 2020), and his work has appeared in Best Canadian Poetry, Arc, The Fiddlehead, Grain, The Malahat Review, The New Quarterly, Riddle Fence, and & Change. Eastern Bloc et Art Souterrain présentent une soirée de téléperformances explorant la notion d'ubiquité, cette capacité d'être présent·e en plusieurs lieux à la fois, réinterprétée à travers les technologies de téléprésence.

Trois projets en développement proposent des approches singulières de cette réflexion. Geopresence, de Paloma Dawkins et Fili Gibbons, ouvre la soirée avec une tapisserie médiatique mêlant son, visuels en temps réel et pratiques incarnées pour décentrer notre regard sur le territoire. Telepæsants, une performance de Michal Seta et Dirk Stromberg, propose un jam électronique entre Montréal et Singapour où distance et latence deviennent matière créative. La soirée se conclut avec Incantations, du collectif Future Ancestors : Koko Mariano, Jielin Liu et Najeeba Ahmed, une performance multisensorielle explorant des formes spéculatives de connexion et de communication au-delà du langage.

Eastern Bloc and Art Souterrain present an evening of teleperformances exploring the notion of ubiquity, the ability to be present in multiple places at once, reinterpreted through telepresence technologies.

Three projects in development offer singular approaches to this reflection. Geopresence, by Paloma Dawkins and Fili Gibbons, opens the evening with a media tapestry blending sound, real-time visuals and embodied practices to decenter our perception of territory. Telepæsants, a performance by Michal Seta and Dirk Stromberg, proposes an electronic jam between Montréal and Singapore where distance and latency become creative material. Kevin Day est l'artiste 2026 pour Intervalles, un programme de résidence d'artiste de courte durée en médias numériques mis sur pied par le centre d'artistes OBORO et le Festival Accès Asie, partenaires de création depuis 1999. Le public pourra découvrir l'œuvre Silicon Shield et rencontrer l'artiste au Laboratoire nouveaux médias d'OBORO le samedi 2 mai 2026 à partir de midi.

Ancré dans une recherche sur les conditions politiques du capitalisme informationnel, son projet Silicon Shield, composé de douze sculptures en plexiglas évoquant des téléphones intelligents, vise à mettre en lumière les infrastructures matérielles et économiques qui sous-tendent les technologies numériques, notamment l’IA, à travers une analyse géopolitique ciblée des tensions entourant Taïwan.

Kevin T. Day est né à Taipei, à Taïwan. Il a obtenu une maîtrise et un doctorat en beaux-arts de l’Université de Colombie-Britannique et vit actuellement à Vancouver. Son travail a été présenté au Canada (Vancouver, Toronto, Montréal) et à l’international (Hong Kong, États-Unis, Allemagne), notamment à la Vancouver Art Gallery, au VIVO Media Arts Centre, à InterAccess, au Center for Creative Media et au Centre CLARK. Il a également présenté ses recherches sur des plateformes de premier plan en art et technologie.

Multimedia installation presented without interruption

Kevin Day is the artist selected for the 2026 edition of Interval, a short-term artist residency program in digital media set up by OBORO artist-run centre and Festival Accès Asie, creative partners since 1999. The public will be able to experience the work Silicon Shield and meet the artist at the LAB OBORO on Saturday, May 2, 2026, starting at noon.

Rooted in research on the political conditions of informational capitalism, his project Silicon Shield — comprising twelve plexiglass sculptures evoking smartphones— aims to shed light on the material and economic infrastructures underpinning digital technologies, particularly AI, through a focused geopolitical analysis of the tensions surrounding Taiwan.

Au sein de nombreuses communautés autochtones et de la diaspora, la couleur a été régulée par des systèmes fondés sur la honte et la discipline esthétique. Dans divers contextes coloniaux à travers le monde, les peuples autochtones ont été stigmatisés par des insultes locales qui les qualifiaient d’excessifs, de vulgaires, de sales ou de grossiers dès lors qu’ils conservaient leurs propres systèmes de couleurs et refusaient de s’assimiler à la blancheur. Cette exposition présente ce refus comme un système de savoir souverain et comme une continuité. Réunissant vingt-trois artistes travaillant sur les territoires autochtones et au sein de réseaux de la diaspora couvrant Abya Yala, l’Île de la Tortue, Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa, Sápmi et le pays yoruba, l’exposition retrace la manière dont la couleur fonctionne comme un système de savoir vivant à travers des lignées, des matériaux et des relations distincts.

Ce recadrage se manifeste à travers des pratiques telles que la fabrication et la parure, où le savoir est produit et transmis de génération en génération. Dans l’œuvre de l’artiste maya k’iche’ José Luis Fernando Morales, des jades et des pierres multicolores, associés à des formes sculptées, relient le savoir ancestral matrilinéaire au design autochtone contemporain. À travers l’image animée, la couleur et le chant des cigales, l’artiste maori Jamie Berry crée un environnement immersif qui enveloppe une constellation d’ornements transnationaux, façonnée par les échanges de matériaux et la fabrication collaborative à travers le Pacifique.

De l’autre côté du Pacifique, la série Diaspora’s Children de l’artiste tongien Telly Tuita porte en elle la mémoire et la nostalgie à travers des palettes saturées. Cette richesse trouve un écho dans la série Spiritually Fashionable de l’artiste yoruba Adetona Omokanye, où la mode devient un lieu de présence spirituelle et esthétique. Les artistes maoris Lissy et Rudi Robinson-Cole intègrent cette utilisation de la couleur dans des environnements immersifs ancrés dans la lignée et la spiritualité.

En Abya Yala, l’artiste aymara-quechua Cholita Chic utilise la couleur pour construire son identité queer et assurer sa visibilité. L’artiste maya kaqchikel Marilyn Boror Bor enfile des fibres teintes dans du ciment, créant ainsi un lien entre la terre, la contamination et la résistance. À Kuskatan/El Salvador, l’artiste nahua-métis Hugo Rivas utilise le camp et l’intensité pour affronter les histoires de violence militaire, de génocide et de complicité du monde de l’art, tandis que l’artiste maya-mestizo Volcancitto (Juan José Guillén) réalise des collages multicolores qui affirment la mémoire territoriale du Pacifique guatémaltèque.

La couleur reste un langage que nous continuons à parler et que nous refusons de laisser disparaître.

Trauma Sensitivity at Work is a clear, compassionate, and practical guide to building cultures of inclusion and safety by addressing an underlying cause of persistent workplace challenges: trauma. Drawing on two decades of global experience in workplace human rights, in leadership, and as a policy advisor—as well as her background as a human rights lawyer and her own healing journey—international changemaker Adriana Leigh demonstrates why trauma sensitivity is a core competency of leadership today and shows you how to cultivate it. Adriana Leigh is an award-winning international consultant and changemaker, and the founder and principal consultant at ALG Consulting. She is a former workplace human rights lawyer turned facilitator, working at the intersection of DEI, gender-based violence and harassment prevention, and psychologically safe workplace systems. She has collaborated with organizations worldwide, including the United Nations, international aid agencies, and both private and public sector entities. Recognized for her transformative work, Adriana has been featured by World Pulse as one of the "21 Women Leaders to Watch" and has received the CREA Global Award. She lives in Montreal, Canada. All three of our pianos, including our new Steinway Model D will be tuned and ready for you to try!
Our Hammond B3 organ and Leslie are also in top shape and ready to test!

Studio A will have their team ready to talk anything music composition, arranging, and preproduction.
Studio B will be showing off our Dolby Atmos System and high precision setup
Studio C will showcase an incredible collection of vintage gear, including an original Neve console, and 24 track tape machine!

Architek Percussion - Object Project III : La Musique Secrète des Objets

Architek présente La musique secrète des objets, troisième volet de sa série Object Project, qui présente des œuvres mettant en musique des objets du quotidien. Au programme : des œuvres de Mark Applebaum, Alexandre Babel, John Cage et Gyrid Nordal Kaldestad.

Architek interprète Quartet de John Cage en utilisant des objets de maison pour frapper, gratter et tapoter dans cette pièce envoûtante.

La pièce Storytable de Gyrid Nordal Kaldestad demande aux interprètes de créer un paysage sonore à l'aide de boîtes en bois fabriquées sur mesure, amplifiées par un microphone de contact soigneusement placé à l'intérieur de chaque boîte.

Dans The Brown Gardener d’Alexandre Babel, les quatre musiciens ont à disposition une collection de différents matériaux aux attributs acoustiques à priori peu complexes, qu’ils devront travailler délicatement pour en extraire un potentiel expressif.

Enfin, dans Straightjacket de Mark Applebaum, Architek est rejoint par Sandra Joseph pour cette exploration en quatre mouvements du son, de l’image et du geste.

From May 6 to 30, 2026, Ada X is transforming its spaces into an art gallery. The exhibition On a Human Scale brings together five artistic proposals that explore interstitial zones – meeting points where memory, technology, ecology, and the body intersect. The works shift the focus of the gaze to defuse the supposed neutrality of technology. Attentive to non-hegemonic narratives, the artists reject any abstract universality and affirm situated and vulnerable practices. By subverting the promises of AI, de-hierarchising forms of intelligence and placing sensory experiences at the centre of the discourse, the project questions the regimes of perception, transmission and accessibility that structure our present. These orientations run through the entire project and form a methodology, originating from and passing through bodies and experiences historically excluded from regimes of visibility, legitimacy, and power.

Resolutely feminist and socially engaged, this exhibition gives space to experimental practices that are dear to Ada X’s mission. On a Human Scale invites us to take a stand: to slow down in the face of the pressure to be productive. To inhabit the cracks rather than ready-made solutions, to imagine ways of perceiving and transmitting that are relational rather than extractivist, and plural rather than normative. The exhibition is thus conceived as a device of resistance, where art becomes a critical tool for thinking about and practising other forms of coexistence in the era of algorithmic capitalism.

Les journées d’étude performatives Éc(h)os des milieux offriront un espace de rencontre, de réflexion et de pratiques, fondé sur le dialogue entre des approches diversifiées en danse et en performance. En mobilisant les savoirs du corps, elles inviteront à interroger les enjeux écologiques, sociaux et politiques qui traversent aujourd’hui les pratiques artistiques du mouvement, à travers des thématiques telles que les milieux envisagés comme co-créateurs, les dimensions poétiques et politiques de la rencontre, ainsi que la co-responsabilité et le soin envers le vivant.

As part of the HTMlles festival, Eastern Bloc in collaboration with Ada X invites you to a day of reflection bringing together discussions and demonstrations around feminist approaches to care, ethical technology, and digital autonomy.

The day, with its main programming offered in hybrid format, will open with a collective discussion facilitated by Tyra Maria Trono, Programming Coordinator at Ada X. The conversation will explore the connections between the projects being presented and the festival's themes.

This will be followed by a presentation of Cursors of Care, a project led by artist Tricia Enns, exploring how small creative gestures can infuse care and meaning into our everyday digital spaces through the creation of personalized pixelated cursors and icons. Following this will be a workshop led by Techtechtech on their project To Weave a Web: the Poetics of Opting Out, featuring artists and researchers Liane Decary-Chen, Marie LeBlanc Flanagan, Sarah Choukah, and Chanel Robin. They will invite us to reflect on ways to divest from tech giants and imagine ethical, sustainable, and community-centered tools.

The day will close with an in-person gathering for those who can join us on-site, with the opportunity to build your own mini server in a micro-workshop.

Le Festival formes · ondes propose trois journées consacrées à la recherche-création en musique et en arts sonores. Porté par le Laboratoire formes · ondes (LFO), l’événement rassemble concerts, tables rondes et installations, offrant un espace de diffusion et d’expérimentation pour les pratiques contemporaines en composition, performance et technologies numériques.

Au programme : œuvres acousmatiques et multicanales, performances instrumentales augmentées, dispositifs interactifs et créations audiovisuelles, accompagnés de présentations qui mettent en lumière les enjeux de recherche sous-jacents. Les installations en galerie invitent quant à elles à une exploration immersive du son et de l’interaction.

Pensé comme un lieu de rencontre entre artistes, chercheur·euse·s et public, le festival favorise les échanges, la médiation et le partage de connaissances autour des pratiques émergentes en musique et en art sonore.

Pour les concerts, veuillez réserver votre place (gratuit ou contribution volontaire) en ligne au lien au bas de la description. Les installations seront accessibles en tout temps de 12h-18h le samedi et dimanche, donc sans réservation. Les tables rondes ne nécessite pas de réservation, mais les places sont limitées!

Animée par Erin Gee (UdeM), cette table ronde interroge la manière dont le corporel — dans ses extensions, médiations et inscriptions — se constitue et se distribue au sein des pratiques de recherche-création. La corporéité y est envisagée non comme un site fixe, mais comme un processus dynamique de co-constitution : un champ de perception, d'émergence et de production du savoir, qui se déploie à travers des agencements incarnés, relationnels, computationnels et hybrides. Cette rencontre ouvre un espace de dialogue entre les pratiques artistiques, les méthodologies de recherche-création et les questionnements théoriques des artistes-chercheur·e·s invité·e·s, dont les travaux traversent le geste, la transduction, l'assemblage, l'archive corporelle, le corps-donnée et la biotechnologie.

Animée par Lou Manuel Arsenault (INRS), cette table ronde propose d’interroger la technique non pas comme un ensemble de moyens, mais plutôt comme le milieu actif de la création sonore. Les choix technologiques y apparaissent comme des vecteurs capables à la fois d’élargir notre potentiel d’action que d’opérer une forme de dépossession de nos processus créatifs. En ouvrant de nouvelles possibilités d'expression, chaque dispositif reconfigure les modes d’intervention, les hiérarchies décisionnelles et les trajectoires de nos voix. Il s’agit ainsi d’examiner comment s'y redéfinissent les conditions d’énonciation, les régimes d’écoute et les contours de l’autorat.

L’atelier vélo de la Remise, comme plusieurs autres ateliers de mécanique de vélo, ne peut que faire ce constat: notre milieu est très homogène et masculin, tant chez nos bénévoles que nos membres. Dans une visée inclusive et féministe, nous ouvrons des plages horaires spécialement réservée aux personnes sous-représentées dans la mécanique de vélo.

Nous aimerions aussi accueillir une plus grande diversité de bénévoles.
Nous souhaitons que cette plage horaire permette à de nouvelles personnes de se familiariser avec l’atelier, de s’y sentir confortable et de pouvoir s’y impliquer!

Une fois par mois, une plage horaire est réservée aux femmes, personnes non-binaires, et autres minorités de genre, d’orientation sexuelle ou de couleur.

Le créneau se veut un moment de mécanique de vélo, mais aussi de partage de savoir et de discussions féministes.

Aucune compétence mécanique n’est nécessaire pour utiliser l’atelier. Des bénévoles se feront un plaisir de vous accompagner dans vos apprentissages et réparations !

Black Pudding: Collaborative Speculation Workshop is a hands-on, in-person workshop series designed to offer an accessible and collaborative entry point into the creative re-use of AI. As a point of departure, we use Black Pudding, a research-driven, AI-based project that revisits the lost pornographic animation film Black Pudding (1969) by Nancy Edell. This workshop series now invites participants to collaborate on an AI-based short animation by contributing to a custom dataset of collages inspired by surviving textual materials (film reviews, critics, etc.) written about the film. The workshop series introduces participants to different forms of AI filmmaking tools in a low-pressure and ecologically mindful setting, and asks: what might AI look like if we slowed it down, made it smaller, and used it to make art together?

The Constellation kick off bike ride/beach hang. Meet at 5pm, departure at 5:30pm SHARP. We will ride bikes to a sketchy beach on the voie maritime. The sketchy beach is magical with best view of the city and the sunset. The bike ride is about 12kms and is mostly flat. We can ride bikes the whole way there. At the end we have to descend a small steep hill and short walk along a path to the water. The accessibility of this terrain depends greatly on the weather immediately before the event (it could be muddy, slippery, overgrown, or dry and very passable). We don't know what beach we will exactly end up on, as this depends on the conditions the day of. Should arrive by 6:30. You can also get there by walking, or taking public transit part of the way and then walking 6-8 kms. No bathrooms, no running water, no services of any kind. Nearest store is 10kms away. RAIN OR SHINE. Things to bring: Water, Snacks, Firewood, Sunscreen (if sunny), Long sleeves and pants (if cool and/or buggy), Bugspray, Lights for the ride home, Friends, Swimming gear (if you wanna swim), Something to sit on, Toilet paper, Games!

Public events take place on May 15 - 16 across spaces at Concordia University in the EV building at the SGW downtown campus. Embodied Interventions is a performance festival involving students from LePARC research cluster and beyond. This year's theme will focus on the overlapping spaces between labour and performance. The work of animation, and the animation of work: to animate a space, to be animated, animare, to give movement or life. In a cultural moment of increased automation and global upheaval, labour becomes disconnected and disembodied. Experiences of precarity and the realities of global capital touch many more of our lives; shaping the way we perform selfhood, making, and relationality. Work bleeds into life, love and leisure. Animation speaks to both the moving body as the sign of freedom, spirit, and liveliness, and to the movement of labour needed to put into motion, to make things happen, to endow matter with life. To (re)animate in this context might be to return to a politic of embodiment, to value both labour and labourer. Through social media and the digital, our relationships to performance are also changed; we take the invisible for granted and fetishize the performative. The machinations of labour are the undercurrent that animates our lives. The work of the performer becomes the work of the contemporary subject - the production of subjectivity, sociality and emotion.
