Basé à Tiohtià:ke (Montréal, Canada), le collectif artistique Convention collective s’intéresse aux liens entre art et travail dans une optique multidisciplinaire. Nous avons pour objectif de créer des œuvres qui engagent le dialogue et remettent en question les perceptions du travail et des personnes qui travaillent. Chaque année, le collectif choisit un thème en lien avec un aspect de la jonction art-travail. Pour sa première année, en 2024-2025, CCA a choisi le thème « Manger, travailler ». À l’heure actuelle, le collectif se compose de Corie Waugh, Gavin Sewell et Selena Phillips-Boyle. Pensez à inviter tout le monde dans votre entourage que notre travail pourrait intéresser!

Par son premier projet, intitulé « Manger, travailler », Convention collective engage le dialogue sur la conscience de classe, la montée des coûts associés aux besoins de base et l’accessibilité de la nourriture en s’intéressant aux concepts de survie et d’alimentation à l’ère du capitalisme financiarisé. Dans une optique multidisciplinaire et en tant qu’artistes issu·e·s de la classe ouvrière, les membres du collectif apportent leur individualité à la démarche – matériaux, recherche, points de vue. Le projet donnera lieu à un repas communautaire, une intervention publique sous forme d’affichage à la colle de farine et une petite publication « faite maison », qu’on appelle affectueusement un zine.

À la jonction troublante entre le travail et l’alimentation, Convention collective passe par l’art pour approfondir le discours public sur ces enjeux. En explorant ces questions, nous voulons commencer à démythifier un système de production, de distribution et de consommation qui ne répond pas aux besoins de base des êtres humains. Nous invitons le public à réfléchir, à agir et à trouver des moyens créatifs pour nous rapprocher du jour où tout le monde, sans hypocrisie, pourra se souhaiter : « bon appétit! »

Collective Agreement is an artist collective based in Tiohtià:ke (Montréal, Canada) working at the intersections of art and labour through a multidisciplinary approach. The collective aims to create engaging art which opens dialogue and challenges perceptions about work and working people. Each year the collective selects a theme focused on a particular aspect of the art-labour nexus. The theme for CCA’s inaugural 2024 year is ‘Food and Labour’. In the debut project, ‘Food and Labour’, Collective Agreement opens a conversation around class consciousness, the rising cost of essential basics, and food accessibility by exploring the notions of nourishment and survival under financialized capitalism. Through a multidisciplinary approach and a common identity as working class artists, each member contributes work using their chosen materials, research, and perspectives. The project culminates in community food gathering, public intervention in the form of wheat pasting, and a small DIY publication - lovingly known as zines.

At the troubling intersection of food and labour, Collective Agreement aims to deepen the public conversation about these issues through creative artwork. By exploring these questions we hope to reduce the mystification around a system of production, distribution, and consumption that is failing to meet basic human needs. We wish to encourage both reflection and action on the part of audiences and creatively advance the day when our whole society can — without hypocrisy — wish each other, ‘Bon appetit!’

À travers ses films, Hayao Miyazaki ne se contente pas de créer des mondes enchanteurs : il y développe une pensée profondément engagée sur l’écologie, la technique, la société et le pouvoir. Ce cycle de conférences propose d’explorer trois grandes thématiques au coeur de son oeuvre : le respect de la nature et l’équilibre entre humains et non-humains (Nausicaä de la vallée du vent, Princesse Mononoké, Ponyo sur la falaise), la critique du militarisme et des dérives technologiques (Le Château dans le ciel, Porco Rosso, Le Château ambulant, Le Vent se lève), et enfin, la transformation sociale à travers l’anticapitalisme, la communauté et le féminisme (Le Voyage de Chihiro, Mon voisin Totoro, Kiki la petite sorcière). Entre réflexion et émerveillement, ces séances seront l’occasion de plonger dans l’univers du maître de l’animation japonaise et de mieux comprendre les messages qu’il nous transmet à travers ses récits intemporels.

Il est fortement recommandé (mais pas obligatoire) d’avoir vu les films pour apprécier pleinement le contenu du cours. Certaines parties du cours seront susceptibles de dévoiler des éléments clés scénaristiques des films mentionnés.

#3 - Transformation sociale : anticapitalisme, communautés et féminisme (Mardi 29 avril à 19h)
Les films de Hayao Miyazaki ne se contentent pas de raconter des histoires merveilleuses : ils portent aussi un regard critique sur nos sociétés et proposent des alternatives fondées sur la solidarité, la simplicité et l’émancipation. Dans Le Voyage de Chihiro, il dénonce un monde déshumanisé par la logique du profit et célèbre la reconstruction par le travail et l’entraide. Mon voisin Totoro met en lumière une vie proche de la nature et l’importance des liens intergénérationnels, loin des modèles consuméristes. Quant à Kiki la petite sorcière, il s’agit d’un récit d’émancipation féminine, où l’héroïne doit trouver sa place dans une société en mutation. À travers ces trois oeuvres, cette conférence explorera comment Miyazaki imagine des mondes où les valeurs de coopération, d’indépendance et de respect du vivant redéfinissent notre façon de vivre ensemble.

The event will open by exploring the complexity of facilitations gradual rise and legitimization within museum institutions, then go on to unpack its current status and the practices used by facilitators, whose profession is too often overlooked. Lastly, the speakers will consider the effect of these initiativeswithin museums and examine how they participate in memory construction.

Résumé
La cryptographie est pratiquée en tant qu'art et science du secret depuis des millénaires. Historiquement, jusqu’à l’invention de la cryptographie à clé publique au début des années 1970, les codes secrets ont tous été craqués. À l’aide de mathématiques rigoureuses, on a cru pouvoir construire des codes inviolables pour nos ordinateurs modernes. Mais… nos ordinateurs sont « classiques ». Cependant, le monde dans lequel nous vivons est soumis aux lois parfois déroutantes de la théorie quantique, dont la vérification expérimentale il y a un demi-siècle a été récompensée en 2022 par le Prix Nobel de physique. Cette constatation change complètement la donne, tant pour les faiseurs que pour les briseurs de codes. La question fondamentale est de savoir si notre existence quantique est une bénédiction ou une malédiction pour la sécurité informatique. En effet, l’ordinateur quantique sera capable de calculs qui semblent impensables pour un ordinateur conventionnel, ce qui compromettra la soi-disant sécurité des communications sur Internet telles que nous les pratiquons aujourd’hui. Néanmoins, la même théorie quantique ouvre la voie à une cryptographie invulnérable en principe à toute puissance de calcul et technologie de l’espion, même si celui-ci dispose d’un ordinateur quantique; cependant, encore faut-il qu’elle soit implantée correctement. Le jeu du chat et de la souris connaîtra-t-il bientôt un dénouement décisif?

Biographie
Professeur d'informatique à l'Université de Montréal depuis 1979, Gilles Brassard a jeté les bases de la cryptographie quantique à une époque où personne ne pouvait prévoir que les technologies quantiques allaient devenir une industrie se chiffrant maintenant en milliards de dollars par année, encore moins que les Nations Unies allaient proclamer 2025 comme étant l’Année internationale de la science et de la technologie quantiques. Il est aussi parmi les inventeurs de la téléportation quantique, considérée internationalement comme pilier fondamental de l'informatique quantique. Fellow de la Royal Society de Londres, officier de l'Ordre du Canada et de l'Ordre national du Québec, ses nombreuses récompenses incluent le Prix Wolf en physique, le Micius Quantum Prize, le BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Basic Sciences et le Prix Breakthrough en physique fondamentale. Il a reçu des doctorats honorifiques de l'ETH Zürich, de l'Université d'Ottawa et de l'Università della Svizzera italiana de Lugano.

Le cours ABC militant a pour objectif d’introduire les participant·es aux différents aspects théoriques et pratiques de l’action politique dans une perspective progressiste.

Plus exactement, le cours présente un à un les éléments importants pour élaborer un projet, faire connaître sa cause, mobiliser des personnes pour rejoindre une campagne, produire du matériel de diffusion (tracts, affiches, etc.), organiser une manifestation, mener des actions diverses, établir un rapport de force et enfin… gagner sa lutte !

Chaque élément sera traité de manière concrète et le cours inclura de nombreux ateliers pratiques. Cet ABC militant se distingue, car il permettra aux participant·es de réaliser plusieurs tâches pour s’entraîner au militantisme, comprenant une action dans les dernières séances.

Co-présentée avec le Musée McCord Stewart

Le FIFEQ-Montréal vous invite à l'ouverture de sa 21e édition, placée sous le thème du Visible et de l’Invisible. Cette soirée se tiendra le 7 mai 2025 au Musée McCord Stewart, à partir de 18h et mettra à l’honneur les femmes et filles autochtones disparues au Québec et au Canada. Cette thématique abordera la force coloniale qui sévit encore et sa matérialisation dans la vie et le corps des femmes et filles autochtones. La programmation de cette soirée a été co-construite avec Célina Yellowbird, adjointe à la conservation Cultures autochtones au Musée McCord Stewart. D’origine Nêhiyawak et française, Célina appartient à la Première Nation d’Alexander, qui se situe à 40 minutes d’Edmonton. Son projet de maîtrise porte sur les femmes et les filles autochtones et bispirituelles disparues et assassinées dans les Prairies.

Vous aurez l'occasion de découvrir le travail des chorégraphes Barbara Kaneratonni Diabo, de la nation Kanien'keha:ka (Kahnawake), et Daniela Carmona Sánchez (Mexique/Tenochtitlán, suivi de la projection du film À la recherche de Dawn, réalisé par la cinéaste métis Christine Welsh.

Pour débuter la soirée, nous vous invitons à partager un verre et quelques bouchées dans une ambiance conviviale. Vous découvrirez ensuite une proposition artistique, reflétant la force des femmes qui se sont battues pour nous et qui continuent de se battre pour être là aujourd'hui. Trois performances tendres, émotionnelles et profondes seront présentées, mettant en lumière les luttes, les joies et la résilience des femmes de l'Île de la Tortue et honorant celles qui ne sont plus avec nous.

Le long métrage donnera aux spectateurs.trices un aperçu plus profond de l’expérience des femmes autochtones au Canada. Mettant des visages sur cette tragédie nationale. FIFEQ-Montréal warmly invites you to the opening night of its 21st edition, held under the theme “The Visible and the Invisible.” This special evening will take place on May 7, 2025, at the McCord Stewart Museum starting at 6:00 PM, and will pay tribute to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in Québec and Canada. The event will explore the ongoing colonial force and its physical and emotional impact on Indigenous women and girls.

This evening’s program was co-created with Célina Yellowbird, Assistant Curator of Indigenous Cultures at the McCord Stewart Museum. Of Nêhiyawak and French heritage, Célina is a member of the Alexander First Nation, located 40 minutes from Edmonton. Her Master’s research focuses on missing and murdered Indigenous and Two-Spirit women and girls in the Prairies.

You’ll have the opportunity to experience the work of choreographers Barbara Kaneratonni Diabo (Kanien'keha:ka Nation – Kahnawake) and Daniela Carmona Sánchez (Mexico/Tenochtitlán), followed by the screening of the film Finding Dawn, directed by acclaimed Métis filmmaker Christine Welsh.

To start the evening, we invite you to join us for a drink and a few bites in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The artistic performance that follows is a powerful tribute to the strength of women who have fought before us and those still fighting to be heard today. Three heartfelt, emotional, and deeply moving performances will highlight the struggles, joys, and resilience of women from Turtle Island, while honoring those who are no longer with us.

The feature-length documentary will offer attendees a deeper insight into the lived experiences of Indigenous women in Canada. Through the stories of Dawn Crey, Ramona Wilson, and Daleen Kay Bosse, Finding Dawn puts faces to this national tragedy—just three of an estimated 500 Indigenous women reported missing or murdered in Canada over the past 30 years.

Note: Since the film’s release in 2008, this number has risen. The Native Women’s Association of Canada now estimates over 4,000 Indigenous women and girls have gone missing or been murdered.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Célina Yellowbird, joined by special guests – to be announced in the coming weeks.

Through ethnographic cinema, this evening invites collective reflection on the social, cultural, and political issues surrounding this harsh reality—while also celebrating the resilience and vibrant cultures of Indigenous Peoples.

Suite à l’escalade génocidaire en Palestine, actée par le gouvernement sioniste depuis le 7 octobre, en continuité avec sa politique raciste et coloniale depuis 1948, plusieurs bénévoles ont insisté sur l’importance politique et culturelle de montrer une myriade d’images de la Palestine - dans un contexte où nous sommes particulièrement inondées d’images décontextualisées voire déshumanisées.

Nayrouz Abu Hatoum, professeure au département d’anthropologie et de sociologie à Concordia. Elle travaille actuellement sur un projet ethnographique qui examine la politique des arts visuels et le rôle des artistes dans l'expansion de l'imagination des Palestiniens. Nayrouz Abu Hatoum est membre fondateur d'Insaniyyat, la société des anthropologues palestinien.nes.

Muhammad Nour El Khairy, cinéaste, vidéaste, programmateur et monteur de films palestinien originaire de Jordanie, actuellement basé à Tio'tia:ke (Montréal). Dans son travail, il est motivé par la compréhension des images en mouvement comme des systèmes vivants complexes, dont la portée politique va au-delà de leur capacité représentative et s'étend à leur financement, leur production et leur distribution.

In the wake of the zionist government's genocidal escalation in Palestine on 7 October, in continuation of its racist and colonial policy since 1948, a number of volunteers have stressed the political and cultural importance of showing a myriad of images of Palestine - in a context where we are particularly inundated with decontextualized and even dehumanized images.

The aim is to provide a space for reflection and discussion that will enable us to break out of the paradigm of political crisis and understand, above all, what an enduring colonial and racist force represents and what it means in the context of Palestine.
Through an eclectic selection of ethnographic short films made mainly by Palestinian filmmakers, combining a sensitive and sensory approach, visual and technological experimentation and intimate portraiture, we invite you to (re)question your position as spectator through the prism of politics, images and filmic ethnography.

Ethnographic filmmaking is distinguished by its desire to understand and convey, as close as possible to people's experiences, cultures and everyday gestures. Here, it's not just a question of showing, but of listening, of cohabiting with reality, of allowing time for stories to be told in a different way. Rooted in life contexts marked by violence, occupation, exile or memory, these films invite us to perceive what we don't always see: the silences, the expectations, the forces and struggles that shape existence.

Offing “خط الأفق”, Oraib Toukan : Steering away from images of war, this film explores banality, tenderness, and voice as forms of resistance and subjectivity amid conflict.

The session will be followed by a discussion with:

Nada El-Omari, a filmmaker and writer of Palestinian and Egyptian origin based in Montreal, Quebec. Her practice and research focus on the intergenerational transmission of memory, displacement, and stories of belonging and identity, which she explores through a poetic and hybrid lens.

Nayrouz Abu Hatoum, a professor in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Concordia University. She is currently working on an ethnographic project examining the politics of visual arts and the role of artists in expanding Palestinian imagination. Nayrouz Abu Hatoum is a founding member of Insaniyyat, the society of Palestinian anthropologists.

Muhammad Nour El Khairy, a Palestinian filmmaker, videographer, film programmer, and editor originally from Jordan, currently based in Tio'tia:ke (Montreal). His work is driven by an understanding of moving images as complex living systems, whose political reach goes beyond representational capacity to include their funding, production, and distribution.

Gretchen McCulloch writes about linguistics for a general audience, especially internet language. She writes the Resident Linguist column at Wired (and formerly at The Toast). McCulloch has a master’s in linguistics from McGill University, runs the blog All Things Linguistic, and cohosts Lingthusiasm, a podcast that’s enthusiastic about linguistics. She lives in Montreal, but also on the internet.

Dans un contexte où les femmes cinéastes-anthropologues sont invisibilisées dans le domaine du film ethnographique et plus largement dans le cinéma, nous vous proposons un programme où vous serez invité.e à (re)découvrir des approches filmiques novatrices et déroutantes par deux cinéastes-anthropologues phares : Trinh T. Minh-ha (Reassemblage, 1982) et Verena Paravel (7 Queens, 2008). À travers ces deux œuvres qui se positionnent en contre champs de l'ethnographie dite classique, les autrices nous invitent dans une incursion filmique et anthropologique au plus près du sensible et de l’empathie. Elles se distinguent dans leurs écritures formelles mais se rejoignent dans ce désir et cette tentative de parler au plus près des réalités et des personnes rencontrées, et non sur ou pour ces dernières.

Alors que Trinh T. Minh-ha s’attarde à humaniser un village au Sénégal et à questionner notre posture de spectateur.trice en jouant sur la fixité, de fausses répétitions, des gros plans et une narration rythmée par un montage et une bande-son ficelés ; Verena Paravel, grâce à une caméra toujours en mouvement, nous invite dans ses déambulations et rencontres hasardeuses dans un quartier urbain ultrasonore et vivant, le long de la 7 Queens à New-York.

Il s’agit de deux films inclassables où la frontière entre la cinéaste, les spectateurs.trices, la caméra et les protagonistes est à peine perceptible, si bien qu’elle finit par devenir l’enjeu des narrations et des représentations.

Une invitation à participer par le regard, l’ouï ainsi que par la discussion qui suivra en présence de:
- Nat Nesvaderani, professeure irano-américaine au département d’anthropologie à l’Université de Laval et cofondatrice du Laboratoire d’anthropologie multimodale (LAM) . Ses recherches portent sur les migrations, les personnes réfugiées, la jeunesse, l’affect et l’humanitaire dans la région de l’Asie du Sud-Ouest et de l’Afrique du Nord. Elle s’intéresse également au cinéma, ainsi qu’aux études féministes, de genre et de sexualité.
- Marion Froger, professeure à l’Université de Montréal au département d’histoire de l’art, de cinéma et des médias audiovisuels, se joindra aussi à nous. Elle apportera un regard sur le cinéma en tant qu’expérience sociale, inscrite dans les relations entre créateurs, spectateurs et représentations, à travers une démarche socio-anthropologique.

At a time when women film-makers-anthropologists are being overlooked in the field of ethnographic film and more widely in cinema. We are offering you a programme in which you will be invited to (re)discover innovative and disconcerting approaches to film by two leading women film-makers-anthropologists : Trinh T. Minh-ha (Reassemblage, 1982) and Verena Paravel (7 Queens, 2008).

In these two works, which take a counter-field approach to so-called classical ethnography, the authors invite us to take a filmic and anthropological journey as close as possible to the senses and to empathy. They differ in their formal writing, but are united in their desire and attempt to speak as closely as possible to the realities and people they meet, and not about or for them.

While Trinh T. Minh-ha sets out to humanise a village in Senegal and to question our posture as spectators by playing with fixity, false repetitions, close-ups and a narrative punctuated by carefully crafted editing and a soundtrack, Verena Paravel, with a camera that is always in motion, invites us to wander through her random encounters in an ultrasonically lively urban neighbourhood along 7 Queens in New York.

These are two unclassifiable films in which the boundary between the filmmaker, the viewers, the camera and the protagonists are barely perceptible. So much so, that it becomes the issue of it’s very own narration and representation.

An invitation to participate by looking, hearing and through the discussion that will follow in the presence of:

Nat Nesvaderani, an Iranian-American professor in the Anthropology Department at Université de Laval. Her research focuses on migration, refugees, youth, affect and humanitarianism in South-West Asia and North Africa. She is also interested in cinema and feminist, gender and sexuality studies.

Marion Froger, a professor at the Université de Montréal in the Department of Art History, Cinema and Audiovisual Media, will also be joining us. She will take a socio-anthropological look at cinema as a social experience, embedded in the relationships between creators, spectators and representations.

Trop souvent réduites à des chiffres ou à des faits divers, les réalités des femmes et filles autochtones disparues ou assassinées au Québec et au Canada sont ici racontées de l’intérieur, avec dignité, force et sensibilité. La caméra devient un outil de résistance, de mémoire et de transmission. Chaque film propose un regard personnel sur l’identité, le choc culturel, la disparition, le deuil, la résilience et l’amour. Cette séance est un hommage, un cri, une invitation à écouter, à voir, et à ne pas détourner les yeux. Une discussion avec des invité·es du Wapikoni viendra prolonger cette expérience essentielle.

In partnership with Wapikoni Mobile, this screening of short films gives voice to Indigenous women and communities through powerful and intimate works. Too often reduced to statistics or headlines, the realities of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Quebec and Canada are told here from within — with dignity, strength, and sensitivity. The camera becomes a tool of resistance, memory, and transmission. Each film offers a personal perspective on identity, cultural clash, disappearance, grief, resilience, and love. This screening is a tribute, a cry, an invitation to listen, to witness, and not to look away. A discussion with guests from Wapikoni will follow, extending this essential experience.

Au-dela du riche et généreux témoignage de cette femme qui se raconte sans fard ; il s’agit surtout d’une rencontre intime entre Henriette, Magalie Roucaut et d’une caméra sensible qui tentent de capter les dernières traces d’une vie ouvrière et d’un lieu révolus.

To close out this 21st edition in style, the FIFEQ team is excited to invite you to a special open-air screening on the rooftop of the Rialto Theatre. This final evening brings together three short and mid-length films, all centered around this year’s theme: the visible and the invisible. These works aim to “reveal often-overlooked worlds of labor” or “explore work environments typically kept out of frame,” diving into gestures, spaces, and working-class memories with close attention to the everyday, the sensory, the intimate, and the camera’s interaction with filmmakers, subjects, and viewers alike.

This cinematic moment—with a breathtaking view over the city—will also be the perfect occasion to catch a sunset, enjoy a live DJ set, sip non-alcoholic drinks, and munch on some popcorn. The DJ, j_basco, fascinated by organic and evolving sounds, offers an immersive musical journey blending genres and emotions to lead listeners toward unexpected sonic horizons.

This film explores the ethical implications of watching people in danger on screen. Through an analysis of migration documentaries and an investigation in Philadelphia, it examines the creation of temporal precarity without a human subject. Bodies on Hold prompts us to reflect on our relationship with these images and the responsibilities that come with them, questioning our position as viewers in the face of human vulnerability.

By blending visual analysis and philosophical reflection, Anat Dan confronts us with our own role in consuming and producing images of suffering.
Minding Sand

In this observational short film, anthropologist and filmmaker Laura van Erp immerses us in the world of sand miners and fishermen on the beaches of Sierra Leone. Through dialogue and landscape shots, we witness a working-class life deeply tied to an environment disappearing due to climate change and increasingly intensive mining.
A necessary film that reminds us of the current tension between the Anthropocene, ecocide, and the survival of communities in the Global South.

Henriette is the “matriarch” of a former working-class neighborhood in Paris. As the area rapidly gentrifies, Magalie Roucaut films Henriette in her apartment, where she shares her life as a working-class woman and her deep attachment to this place that has shaped her daily existence.
Beyond Henriette’s rich and generous testimony, the film is above all an intimate encounter between her, Magalie Roucaut, and a sensitive camera trying to capture the final traces of a vanishing working-class life and space.

Title : Mathematics that resonates

Abstract : What do the tones of a cello have to do with those annoying hot spots when you microwave some food? What does noise reduction in a car share in common with designing a fusion reactor? To a mathematician, these are all examples of the fundamental notion of 'resonances': the mathematical concepts of eigenvalues and eigenvectors, which describe how systems respond to periodic forces. Through surprising and perhaps unusual examples, we will see how mathematics is used to find and optimize resonances in fields as diverse as acoustics, engineering, and quantum mechanics. We will also uncover cases where resonance is something to be avoided-whether in the design of buildings, spacecraft, or even cognac glasses. Along the way, we will catch glimpses of the mathematical techniques that shape our understanding of the world, from linear algebra to spectral theory. Whether you are a mathematician or simply curious about the hidden structures behind sound and motion, this talk will reveal some mathematics that truly resonates.

PUBLIC LECTURE
Title : A tour of the mathematics of music and sound

Abstract : Music and sound are part of all cultures and critical to human and animal communication. Yet mathematics is crucial for understanding why instruments (including the voice) sound like they do, what frequencies sound harmonious or dissonant, how strings and objects vibrate or resonate, how our ears and brains analyze sound, and how sound waves propagate in and are changed by an architectural space. Why can't the musical interval called a perfect fifth be "perfect", and how does this affect musical tuning? Why does one hear a "chirp" when one claps in a racquetball court? We will take a tour of such questions and phenomena, explaining how applied mathematics underlies each. The lecture will include some live demos with instruments and sounds, and live sound analysis with the "spectrogram" (time-frequency analysis). No musical training is required to enjoy the lecture, and the mathematics needs only ratios, simple graphs, and trigonometry (although of course there will be pointers to more advanced areas!)

* Latecomers are welcome, but you'll have to text someone to find out where we

* The spot is a 20-30 minute bike ride. It's only accessible by bike, or by a
looooong walk from a bus stop. You can't drive there! We have to descend a
small hill and walk along a trail for a few minutes to get to the beach spot.

WHEN:

* Meet at 5pm

* We'll depart at 5:30pm sharp

WHAT (to bring):

It's a sketchy beach, so there are no amenities, no services, no bathrooms.

* Water/beverages/extra water

* Firewood so we can have a fire

* Chair, tarp, towel - something to sit on!

* Snacks to eat and share

* Bike lights

* Bug spray

* Glasses/facemask/face covering - depending on the weather, sometimes it can
be a bit buggy on ride there/back

* Clothes - you can swim if you want, but it's also good to wear long pants for
small amount of bushwhacking

* I'll bring a big bluetooth speaker for music

WHY:

This is meant to be a chill activity for people to meet and greet before the
chaos of Saturday/Sunday. This beach is an awesome and special part of Montreal
- the best place to watch the sunset and the easiest way to get out of the city
without a car. Borrow some bikes for your out of town friends and bring them
along! We'll get there in time to enjoy the sunset.

Taking Everything: Revolutionary Anarchism in Greece, Eastern Europe, and Latin
America (CÉDA, room 119, English)

This discussion is interested in anarchism as a revolutionary tendency. We want
the expropriation of property and the liberation of territory on a massive scale
through widespread social uprising and resonating anarchist participation. For a
few years in Ukraine in the 1910s, up to seven million people lived inside of
territory liberated by anarchist forces. In recent years, anarchists have built
barricades in Chile and Greece, defending neighbourhoods, creating liberated
spaces for housing, and looting goods. They've played essential roles in not
just participating in – something we can do easily here in Montreal – but
setting off uprisings – something that requires much more influence.

Broad participation and engagement with anarchism is something we all say we
want and it is worth understanding at a deeper level. It is not enough to see
other groups' most appealing successes and want to replicate them, we need to
understand the kinds of smaller projects, structures, and analysis in the years
leading up to these events that have enabled anarchists to become more than an
alienated milieu of a few dozen or hundred people. Particular interest will be
given to lesser known groups, initiatives, and texts, which are well-documented
and have proven to be reliable successes that could be replicated in Montreal.
If we can implement the lessons from other places, we can bring ourselves closer
to a revolution.

Artificial Intelligence through a Radical Lens (CÉDA, room 123, English)

A capitalist vision of so-called artificial intelligence (AI) is ubiquitous in
mainstream discourse and has begun to penetrate many aspects of our lives. The
mainstream discourse is divided into techno-enthusiasts happy with the idea of
deploying AI into every corner of our lives and AI doomers who believe these
developments portend human extinction and AI-driven apocalypse. Both views
overlook the reality that AI is already widely used as a weapon of war by the
usual suspects, and as a tool of exploitation, surveillance and control by the
capitalist class. Its widespread deployment is also measurably harming the
planet, by requiring a growing quantity of energy and material resources. As
anticapitalist activists, how can we respond to the widespread adoption of
artificial intelligence in the world around us? Should we ignore it, oppose it,
or reappropriate it as a tool for radical change? This workshop builds upon its
first iteration in 2024 and is intended to continue the discussion.

This discussion will be facilitated by members of Science for the People, a
radical community organization that seeks to develop a theory and practice of
science by and for the people, in opposition to science directed by corporate
greed and imperialism.

Towards an Anarchist Analysis of Cancer (CÉDA, room 119, English)

This workshop will start with a short presentation about the facilitator's
attempt at understanding her experience with breast cancer from an anarcho
feminist perspective. Themes include the defunding of the healthcare system in
Canada, the privatization of healthcare in Quebec, gender trouble in cancerland,
the climate crisis and cancer treatment, and the cancer foundation industrial
complex. After the presentation, there will be a discussion about the politics
of cancer and cancer treatment. Please keep in mind that the facilitator is not
a trained trauma therapist, nor grief worker. While there are lots of emotional
aspects of the cancer diagnosis and treatment experience, we will be trying to
keep our discussion focused on analyzing our experiences collectively and
finding political meaning together.

Veronica is a white, queer woman who was diagnosed with stage 2, hormone
positive, HER2 negative invasive ductal carcinoma at the age of 35. She is a
long time anarchist organizer who has been most active in the prisoner justice
movement in Montreal.

Anti-Authoritarian Horizons (CÉDA, room 123, French)

No one likes to be told what to do! Nevertheless, we sometimes find the traces
of authority in individual behaviors and in groups structures on the radical
left... CLAC (Convergence des luttes anticapitalistes) proposes a workshop to
theorize, discuss and test what a horizontal and anti-authoritarian organization
might look like. You're invited to reflect with us on how to reduce power
dynamics in our milieu towards anti-authoritarian horizons.

CLAC spreads anti-capitalist, anti-oppressive, anti-authoritarian and decolonial
ideas and practices while functioning according to non-hierarchical principles.
It's a space for collective organizing to oppose the violence of the State and
capital.

Militant or Military? The Organization of Violence (CÉDA, room 125, French)

How do we adopt a nuanced attitude toward the necessity of armed self-defense in
the context of extremely violent conflicts? When the level of violence of a
struggle rises, how do we ensure that autonomy and mutual aid continue to orient
our activity rather than the priorities of armed groups that often pass
themselves off as "the resistance"? In a moment when the militarized struggles
led by specific armed groups are glorified, it is more important than ever to
mark the difference between militant and military action. In other words, the
difference between tactics and forms of escalation arising from the
self-organization of oppressed classes and those imposed by groups specialized
in organized violence. This workshop takes inspiration from anarchist
perspectives on the Syrian Revolution and Italian autonomy in the 60s and 70s to
propose some starting points for preventing the domination of armed groups over
struggles that become violent.

"All Will Be Equalized!": Georgia's Freedom-Seekers of the Swamps, Backwoods,
and Sea Islands 1526-1890 (CÉDA, room 119, English)

Historian-activist Andrew Zonneveld will present a new book documenting a
300-year period of dynamic and multi-racial resistance to slavery and
colonialism in the southeastern U.S. From rebellious Afro-Indigenous communities
on Georgia's Sea Islands, to inter-racial networks of anti-Confederate
resistance during the U.S. Civil War, these are the stories of oppressed peoples
of African, Indigenous, and European descent who lived and fought together for
their collective liberation.

Andrew Zonneveld is a Georgia-based historian, master naturalist, an anarchist
organizer. His essays on social movement history have been published in a number
of books and periodicals, including ROAR Magazine, Mergoat Magazine, and Orobo
Journal.

Reading of The Mega-Adventures of Koko Sisi et Kiki Pupu by the Authors (CÉDA,

This interactive reading and workshop will bring The Mega Adventures of Koko
Sisi and Kiki Pupu: The Mystery of the Stolen Bananas to life with authors Papi
and El Choco. The session will feature a bilingual reading in French and
English, ensuring that kids of all backgrounds can fully enjoy the adventure.
Following the reading, there will be a Q&A session where children and parents
can ask questions about the book, the creative process, and how anyone can make
their own children’s book. The goal is to promote literacy, storytelling, and
DIY publishing in an accessible and inspiring way. The authors will also be
available to sign books after the session, making this a fun and memorable
experience for attendees.

Papi is an anarchist filmmaker from Borike and his kid el choco is a boy who
loves to read and play. They co-authored the book "The Mega Adventures of Koko
Sisi and Kiki Pupu".

Its beating heart has been a pulse of encouragement, and its soul and staff have been our body, its booze and its blood. Unfortunately, the Mainline Theatre is closing at the endof June, so this will be our LastSlowdance here. We are sad and heartbroken about it all, and while its true that other venues could accomodate an event of this type, this is our last Montreal slowdancefor now and maybe ever. I love making odd events but convincing venues to host them is exhausting. People who know the event love it but people who hear about it for thefirst time are deeply skeptical. So we're not saying goodbye forever just for the foreseeable. And wethank you SO MUCH for your attendance, love, support and bravery for the last 17 years! A NOTE ABOUT THE DANCE CARDS: The dancecards are these little handmade booklets that contain a setlist of every song that will be played that evening. The ideais that during the course of the evening, you can "book" certain songs with certain people, and vice versa. So when your charming host announces a particular song, you can look on your dancecard and see who it is you're going to dance with next. There is a little space after every song where people can write their names. How filled your dancecard gets depends on you, of course. Look for the Dancecard-Signing Station located somewhere on the premises where small pencils are available. Use of the dancecards, is, of course, optional, and completely up to you. Proceed at your comfort level.

A NOTE ABOUTTHE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT: Essentially, you have the right to ask anyone you want to dance. But whoeverit is you asked has the right to refuse your request, and not have to give any reason why. But wonderfully, you have this right as well. This is done because slowdancingwith someone is rather an intimate sort of enterprise, and you should have the right to back out anytime you wish. Queer Slowdance is about consensual respect and enjoyment.

A NOTE ABOUT THE DESIGNATED DANCERS: On any particular night there will be a handful of our Designated Dancers available to dance with you for the first half ofthe evening - so arrive early! They will be wearing glowing lights over their hearts, and these Designated Dancers are warm, charming, and safe people to ask to dance. Of course, the same Rules of Engagement apply, and they, as free agents, can decide for themselves who they want to dance with, and for how long, but in all likelihood, they would be very open to dancing with you. Please think of them as awarm taxi light in the middle of a blizzard.

A NOTE ABOUT COMMON SCENTS: Because at this event folks will be in very close proximity to each other, pretty much hugging, we would like attendees to bemindful of what they smell like. Bathing is a great idea, but ditchthe fragrances! Thank you!

"Dans les années 1980 à Toulouse, un groupe insaisissable a commencé à bombarder
des entreprises informatiques. ‘CLODO’ a disparu après trois ans, sans jamais
être capturé ni entendu à nouveau. Deux cinéastes lancent une enquête sur CLODO,
à la recherche de réponses, de motivations et d'identités, mais ils sont
rapidement frustrés par un collectif qui frappait dans la nuit noire, ne
laissant derrière lui que des cendres et la ligne sporadique de graffitis
cryptiques. Le film combine des traces archivistiques, une chorégraphie virale
sur bureau, et des enregistrements vidéo nocturnes des cibles de CLODO, pour

plus conscients des enjeux de consentement autour du contact physique et de la
sexualité, afin de créer des espaces plus sécuritaires pour toustes. Pourtant,
nos communautés continuent à faire face à des situations de bris de consentement
et d’agressions sexuelles sous différentes formes. Celles-ci perpétuent des
expériences traumatiques, endommagent grandement nos tissus sociaux et
affaiblissent nos luttes.

❓ Pourquoi le consentement demeure-t-il plus facile à comprendre en théorie qu’à
appliquer en pratique pour la plupart d’entre nous?
❓ Comment regagner en pouvoir dans notre capacité à exprimer nos limites et
désirs en demeurant à l'écoute de ceux des autres?

🎯 Dans cet atelier, nous réfléchirons à notre relation individuelle et
collective au consentement au travers de discussions et d’exercices pratiques,
non-sexuels et ancrés dans l’ici et maintenant.

👥 À propos de nous:

Avec notre projet À Corps Consentants (duo constitué de Caro et Cachou), nous
facilitons depuis 2019 des ateliers pratiques sur le consentement. Notre
approche est féministe-Queer, sensible aux traumas et axée sur l’écoute du
corps. En 2024 et 2025, nous avons suivi plusieurs formations approfondies sur
La Roue du Consentement - Like a Pro - auprès de The School of Consent fondé par
Dr. Betty Martin.

Nous avons collaboré avec divers festivals et collectifs qui prônent une vision
positive du rapport au corps et à la sexualité et explorent les liens entre
émancipation sensuelle, artistique et politique: Brûlances, La Riposte
Féministe, Touch and Play, Le Corps a ses Raisons et le collectif NU.E.S.

Depuis 2017, Caro développe sa pratique professionnelle comme travailleuse
sociale en santé mentale et étudie présentement en sexologie. Cachou, stripper
et massothérapeute, poursuit actuellement des études en éducation sexuelle
somatique et sexological bodywork.

This publication is an extension of two exhibitions proposed by Stphane Gilot: Ceque racontent les couloirs jaunes(2017) and O lcho prcde la voix (2024). The idea is to bring the two installations into dialogue within the tactile and visual space of the book. These projects are intimately connected by both the themes addressed and the participating artists.

The book brings together a variety of documentation concerning the two installational and performative works: installation views, performance photos,project presentations, and literary excerpts. All of which helps delineate the themes broached and approaches taken in each case, thus broadening reflections on both thespecificities and the general evolution of the visual and spatial research.

Secret lives of exhibitions

A commented visit by artists Susannah Wesley and Meredith Carruthers with the participation of Anne St-Louis, responsible of the Public Education Program.

Within this tour of the exhibition, Wesley and Carruthers will describe the research behind the current exhibition, notably their investigation of radical pedagogical texts by artist Simon Nicholson. They will highlight the impacts of intergenerational exchange and material explorations on Nicholsons propositional writing and teaching, and in turn how this thinking reshaped their own studio practice and the development of this exhibition. In conversation with Anne St-Louis, theartists will bring forward the ways that their research and exhibition framework has become living action with the participation of school groups since the exhibition opened in April.

Le temps en mathématiques : efficacité, beauté et complexité des résultats mathématiques


Résumé :

Quel lien entre les mathématiques et le temps ? Au-delà des nombreuses heures nécessaires à l’élaboration d’un résultat mathématique et de sa preuve, les notions de temps et d’efficacité sont notamment présentes dans l’évaluation de la complexité d’un algorithme. Ainsi, on dit qu’un algorithme utilise la force brute lorsqu’il accomplit ses tâches d’une manière peu raffinée : ça peut fonctionner pour de petits exemples, mais c’est inélégant, et rapidement inefficace. En revanche, de belles idées sont souvent au cœur de façons innovantes de calculer, ce qui permet en plus d’accélérer les processus.

Dans cette conférence, il s’agira dans un premier temps de décortiquer différents algorithmes de multiplication des nombres entiers et présenter les résultats de la quête, étalée sur plusieurs décennies et toujours incomplète, de la façon parfaite de multiplier. Cette quête amène notamment à illustrer comment la beauté d’une équation peut guider notre intuition mathématique.

Dans un second temps la notion de temps en mathématiques sera explorée dans le cadre de l’apprentissage : le temps alloué aux programmes scolaires permet à l’apprenant de constater la complexité des mathématiques, mais lui laisse-t-il suffisamment d’espace pour construire la connaissance mathématique ? Pour développer sa créativité et de ce fait découvrir la beauté des mathématiques ? Un retour d’expérience avec des élèves de l’école primaire sera présenté et discuté.

Angel (2020) de Maxim Shalygin estune rflexion musicale ne du bouleversement mondial caus par la pandmie de COVID-19. Composedurant et en amont de cette priode marque par un traumatisme gnralis, luvre questionne la relation de lhumanit la nature et la fragilit de lexistence.

Maxim Shalygin,compositeur ukraino-nerlandais,sest impos comme une voix importante de la musique classique contemporaine. Il sinstalle aux Pays-Bas en 2010, o il compose des uvres nombreux couvrant un large ventail de genres : musique de chambre, vocale, symphonique, lectroacoustique, ainsi que des musiques pour le thtre, le ballet et le cinma.

La violoniste Adrianne Munden-Dixon et la violoncelliste Audreanne Filion offrirontla cration qubcoise de cette uvre poignante.

Compose pour 12 guitares lap steel amplifies et accompagne d'une diffusion lectronique, cette pice de 42 minutes reprsente en musique l'ide d'une trace spectrale de la mmoire : un souvenir fragment, o seuls lesdtails les plus marquants ressurgissent, clipsant le reste.

Cette pice sinscrit dans une dmarche plus large qui caractrise lensemble du travail dAlary. N en France et install Montral, il est un compositeur polyvalent dont luvre couvre des albums, des musiques de film, des crations pour la danse contemporaine ainsi que des installations sonores. Form en architecture, en arts sonores et en composition instrumentale, il dveloppe une criture qui brouille les frontires entre musiques exprimentale, populaire et contemporaine. Son approche combine lments acoustiques et lectroniques pour donner naissance des univers sonores denses et motionnellement chargs, influencs aussi bien par le bruitisme et la musique baroque que par le post-minimalisme. Alary a collabor avec des artistestels que Bjrk, Nick Knight, CatPower et Doug Aitken, et a publi sa musique sur des labels comme Rephlex, Fatcat Records, 130701 etLINE. Innovations en concert presents Maxim Shalygin's "Angel" and Olivier Alary's "Vestiges" - meditations between past and present reimagining musical traditions for a complex, uncertain era.

Maxim Shalygins "Angel" (2020) is a reflection born from the global upheaval of the COVID-19 pandemic. Composed during and preceding - a time of widespread trauma, it questions humanity's relationship with nature and the fragility of existence.

Ukrainian-Dutch composer Maxim Shalygin has established himself as a significant voice in contemporary classical music. He moved to the Netherlands in 2010, where he has since composed numerous works including chamber, vocal, symphonic, and electroacoustic music, as well as scores for theatre, ballet, and film. Violinist Adrianne Munden-Dixon and cellist Audreanne Filion will perform the Quebec premiere ofthis poignant work.

Vestiges is a haunting, immersive sonic meditation by Montreal-based composer Olivier Alary. Scored for twelve amplified lap steel guitars and electronic diffusion, the 42-minute work is the culmination of over a decade of artistic inquiry. Hovering between memory and oblivion, it evokes a spectral vocalitya ghostly choir of echoes and reverberations.

Each guitar, played using extended and unconventional techniques, becomes a conduit for fragments of sound, like traces of forgotten voices. Emotionally charged andephemeral, they resurface like memories half-remembered. Drawing onthe structural principles of madrigals, Orthodox liturgy, Gaelic psalmody, and chorales, Alary constructs a sonic architecture rooted in the past while resisting nostalgia, in an unmistakably contemporary sonic landscape rich with spectral shimmer and spatial nuance.

Born in France and based in Montreal, Olivier Alary is a versatile composer whose work spans albums, film scores, dance, and sound installations. With formal training in architecture, sound arts, and instrumental composition, he crafts music that dissolves the boundaries between experimental, popular, and contemporary forms. His practice integrates acoustic and electronic elements into dense, emotionally resonant sound worlds shaped by influences ranging from noise and baroque to post-minimalism. Alary has collaborated with artists such as Bjrk, Nick Knight, Cat Power, and Doug Aitken, and has released work on labels including Rephlex, Fatcat Records, 130701, and LINE. Hehas also composed the music for over fifty films, many of which have been recognized at major festivals including Cannes, Sundance, andVenice.
