Dans le cadre du programme de rsidence de recherche, Artexte invite trois chercheur.e.s (individus ou collectifs) de toutes pratiquesen art contemporain parcourir les ressources documentaires pour explorer sa collection afin dapprofondir un sujet de leur choix.

Les projets de rsidence retenussont slectionns pour les liens directs quils entretiennent avec la collection et la mission institutionnelle dArtexte, tout en dmontrant une sensibilit auxintrts et aux besoins en recherche de la communaut artistiquelocale et nationale.

Artexte priorise les projets qui explorent et valorisent des pratiques, des thmatiques ou des rcits artistiques historiquement sous-reprsents ou marginaliss dans lhistoire de lart canadien et le milieu artistique national, ainsi que des projets qui dvoilent et contribuent laccessibilit de la documentation insouponne et mconnue de la collection.

Artexte offre aux rsident.e.s un soutien la recherche, ainsi quunespace de travail muni doutils(ordinateur, numriseur et photocopieur). Une rsidence varie entre un et trois mois, selon les besoins du projet. Les rsidentes sont galement invites partager ltat de leur recherche lors dune prsentation publique ou dune entrevue publie en fin de parcours sur le site dArtexte. Artexte accorde un cachet total de 2 000 $ aux rsidentes slectionnes (individus ou collectifs).

Automne : entre octobre et dcembre 2026
Hiver : entre janvier et mars 2027
Printemps : entre avril et juin 2027

As part of its research residency program, Artexte invites three researchers (individuals and/or collectives) from all contemporary art disciplines to explore the collections documentary resources and deepen their research on a particular topic of their choice.

Projects will be selected for their direct connection to the Artexte collection and institutional mission, while also demonstrating sensitivity towards the research interests and needs of the local and national art communities.

Artexte prioritizes projectsthat explore and highlight artistic practices, themes, or narratives that have been historically underrepresented or marginalized in Canadian art history and the national art scene, as well as projects that reveal and improve access to overlooked and lesser-known documentation from the collection.

Artexte is committed to providing residents with research support and a workspace equipped with tools (computer, scanner, photocopier). A research residency spans from one to three months, depending on the needs of each project. Residents are also invited to present their research during a public presentation or an interview published on our website at the end of their residency. Artexte grants a total fee of $2,000 to selected residents (individuals or collectives).

Residency periods:
Fall: between October and December 2026
Winter: between January and March 2027
Spring: between April and June 2027

- Your resume (3 pages maximum, including name, place of residence and phone number);

Dans cette histoire de mort, de meurtre, dtude de march, de vengeance et de surnaturel, deux amies s'unissent pour essayer de comprendre comment vivre tout en tant harceles par les messages malveillants des morts. En combinant l'utilisation du film noir et blanc, de la vido couleur et de mthodes de tournage empruntes au drame, la comdie et au documentaire, adopte une approche du rcit dans laquelle la tche de dpartager la vrit de la fiction, et la comdie du documentaire, mne une forme largie o les morts peuvent parler aux vivants et des gens dans la rue interagir avec des personnages fictifs.


Berlin-Mitte, annes 1980. Un vampire erre dans la ville, prisonnier dune existence dont il ne peut se dfaire. Insensible aux crucifix,indiffrent la lumire du jour, il est condamn non pas par sa nature, mais par son incapacit mourir. Pourtant, il nabandonne pas sa qute : trouver enfinun moyen dchapper lternit. Jusquau jour o lespoir prend une forme inattendue est un hommage aux films de Carl Dreyer, Russ Meyer, Andy Warhol et Ed Wood.

It is the story of mortality, murder, market research, revenge and the supernatural, as two friends come together to try to figure out how to live, while being besieged by malignant messages fromthe dead. Combining the use of black and white film, color video, and dramatic, comedic and documentary methods of shooting, takes an approach to narrative in which the task of sorting out truth from fiction, and documentary from situation comedy, leads to anexpanded form in which the dead can speak to the living and people on the street can talk to fictional characters.


Berlin-Mitte, 1980s. A vampire roams the city, trapped in an existence he cannot escape. Immune to crucifixes, unaffected by daylight, he is cursed not by his nature, but by his inability to die. Yet he refuses to giveup his search for an end to eternity. Until one day, hope takes an unexpected form is a tribute to the films of Carl Dreyer, Russ Meyer, Andy Warhol, and Ed Wood.

In HEX: Begin Again, Laura Taler combines a simple mirror trick with strategies of masquerade to create a world of ritual and séance. Reaching into the past, Taler recites a series of remarkably contemporary historical texts by Maya Deren, Claude Cahun, and Susan Coolidge. These women’s carefully crafted and yet disruptive works sought to create new realities through artistic and technological means—realities where a self-aware female body is simultaneously sexual, intellectual, spiritual, practical, and unbounded by social mores. Through repetition and fragmentation, HEX: Begin Again questions our relationships to past and present technologies, the relativity of absolute value, and long held prejudices about female power. Visual clues punctuate the monologue and point to transformation and new beginnings. By channeling these women, who self-identified as outsiders, Taler weaves movement, cinema, and text to form a complex and playful language of resistance. Romanian-born Canadian artist Laura Taler works across a range of media including performance, film, sound, sculpture, and installation. Her practice explores how memory and history are linked to movement and how the body is able to carry the past without being oppressed by it. Taler began her career as a contemporary dance choreographer before turning her attention to filmmaking and visual art. Her work has been praised for its unique combination of emotional resonance, wit, and striking visuals. She has been a resident at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Centro Cultural Recoleta (Buenos Aires), Carleton Immersive Media Studio (Ottawa), Ottawa Dance Directive, Unpack Studio (Havana) and a fellow at the Institute for Cultural Inquiry (Berlin). Awards include a Gold Hugo from the Chicago International Film Festival, the Best Experimental Documentary award from Hot Docs!, Best of the Festival from New York’s Dance on Camera Festival, and SAW Gallery’s Dennis Tourbin Prize for New Performance. Her public art audio work MONAHAN was awarded the 2024 Creative City Network of Canada’s Public Art Legacy Award. To mark the 30th anniversary of her first film, the village trilogy, screenings and master classes will take place in 2025-26 across Canada.Heures d’ouverture :

QUEERS AT THE TABLE is an anthology of essays, comics, andrecipes that reveals the dynamic and transformative relationship between queerness and food

Food haslong played an important role in queer culture. Lesbian- and queer women-run feminist restaurants, cafes, and coffeehouses have been safe spaces for queer and trans folkwhere gender norms can be challenged and where female authority is legitimized. During the AIDS epidemic, gay men and their allies centred food as an expression of collective care for those who needed itmost. And queer and trans folk have asserted themselves in a restaurant culture largely controlled bywhite cisgender men.

Queers at the Table celebrates the various intersections between queers and food. In its essays, comics, and recipes, the book shows how this shared culture fosters connections, defies norms, honours legacies, and creates community. Taylor Hartson and Tristian Lee write about a queer farming community in which queerness is part of a broad network ofliving things to be enjoyed and shared; Danielle Kydd writes about food security issues as faced by LGBTQ2S+ folk; and Blue Delliquanti's comic on urban foraging in Minneapolis demonstrates the role of aqueer friend group in a local ecosystem.

In full colour throughout, Queers at the Table is a diverseand enriching anthology that reveals the myriad nurturing ways thatqueerness informs food productionand restaurant culture and how food empowers, transforms, and unites queer and trans folk.

Megan J. Elias (they/them) is director of the Food Studies Program at Boston University and an associate professor. They are the author of five books about food history, including Food on the Page: Cookbooksand American Culture (University of Pennsylvania Press). Alex D. Ketchum (she/her) is an assistant professor atthe Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies of McGillUniversity. She is the author of several books, including Ingredients for Revolution: A History of American Feminist Restaurants, Cafes, and Coffeehouses (Concordia University Press). She lives in Montreal, Quebec.

McBride Contemporain presents, the most comprehensive exhibition to date by Canadianartist Beth Frey, returning to Montreal after several years of international success.

After riding the early wave of AI image-making to viral fame, she returns to drawing, combining blind contour sketches with meticulous precision. Through a new series of watercolours, videos, and an installation, Frey delivers a semi-autobiographical narrative in which the artist engages in dialogue with the machine.

In 2021, McGill University celebrated its bicentennial anniversary, reflecting on contributions to research, education, and other successes.The universitys founding within the context of nineteenth-century Atlantic capitalism requires that a deeper account engage with themore complex and difficult elements of its history.

McGill in History brings together diverse historiographies and perspectives to critically examine how McGill has been implicated in power structures and is the product of conflicting ideologies. The book broadens the historical frame of critical university studies, showing how the university can serve as a model for understanding power in modern society.

COMPOSITE is a quarterly networking event dedicated to digital creativity. It was born from an initiative of the Conseil des arts de Montréal, and is coordinated by MAPP_MTL in collaboration with key actors of Montreal’s digital scene (MUTEK Montréal, Zù Montréal, La Piscine, NFB, Société des arts technologiques – SAT, HUB Montréal, XN Québec, SYNTHÈSE, Akousma…).

This event aims to create a recurring meeting space between the world of art and the digital industry, encouraging sharing and cross-pollination between creators, artist-run centers, organizations, companies and digital professionals.

Aux cts de ces paysage urbains, les portraits raliss par Gutsche dans des couvents, descoles et des maisons familialesexplorent lidentit, les relations et le passage du temps. The book collects over five decades of Clara Gutsches photographic practice documenting traces of urban life across Canada, the United States, and Western Europefrom parkscapes and shop windows to industrial ruins. Alongside these urban landscapes, her staged portraitsset in convents, schools, and family homesexplore identity, relationships, and the passage of time. Spanning both black-and-white and colour photography, Gutsches imagesa rich collection of which are part of the CCA Collectionchallenge documentary traditions, blending observation with deliberate composition. From decaying factories to intimate family moments, her photographs about photography reflect a deep and enduring engagementwith the mediums material, formal, and memorial qualities. The book is co-published by Steidl and Scotiabank Photography Award.

Clara Gutsche is the winner of the 2024 Scotiabank Photography Award. In this event, she presents her photographic practice and engagement with the medium in conversation with Phyllis Lambert.

Vivid and turbulent, Hawksworth's cacophony of paintings charts an exhilarating collapse, where chaos and order are inseparably entwined.

Showcasing the artist's characteristic accelerated style and exceptional technique, City of Habits also features Hawksworth's recent experiments in manipulating letterform as a formal rather than communicative device. Overlapping forms draw from découpage, stamping, and printmaking, but, in their simultaneous acknowledgement and refusal of an imposed flatness and order, they turn Dada-esque, nonsensical, and disruptive. Here, typological conventions are pulled and stretched into illegible ends, exposing language as a fragile architecture—one that brilliantly unravels into gesture and noise.

Presented in partnership with Cooper Cole, Antecedent Conditions For A Landslide draws on the structural relationships between land, body, and technology, considering how these entanglements shape migratory movement and the transfer of knowledge across time and space.

Taking inspiration from the writings of academics such as Édouard Glissant, Katherine McKittrick, and Clyde Woods, the exhibition reflects on notions of relation, geography, and collective memory as they inform diasporic experience. The exhibition will take place in two galleries in two different cities, with one iteration in Toronto and another in Montreal, a dual presentation that expands the project's conceptual scope by highlighting movement, circulation, and translation, all key concerns in Hunter's practice.

Ce projet prend racine dans l'inconfort profond que me procurela posture exploitante et extractiviste que l'humain adopte envers la Terre. Je cherche inverser cette dynamique en tablissant unerelation sympotique cest--dire une relation co-crative o lexistence de chacun se faonne dans des systmes complexes et de soin avec une plante dintrieur, dont la capacit dadaptation des environnements souvent inadapts symbolise une rsilience qui rsonne avec ma propre exprience en tant que personne crip*.
Cette attention la vulnrabilit traverse galement lcriture prsente danslexposition. Les crits qui laccompagnent ouvrent un univers o les lois qui encadrent lettres et mots disparaissent, o la diffrence est accueillie, o les mots peuvent exister dans leur multiplicit. Par ces fautes linguistiques visibles, je souhaite explorercomment la vulnrabilit et laltercapacit peuvent transformer nos manires dhabiter le monde.

Join us on November 20 for the opening and book launch of How Modern: Biographies of Architecture in China 19491979. The exhibition and publicationchallenge the often rigid and monolithic perception of socialist modernity in China by exploring the architectural practices of the time, revealing their diversity, inventiveness, and complex connectionsto political, social, and cultural contexts.

At 6pm in the Paul-Desmarais Theatre, exhibition curator Shirley Surya, Curator, Design and Architecture, at M+, Hong Kong,will present the project and her curatorial approach. The presentation will be followed by a conversation with architectural historian Li Hua from Southeast University, Nanjing, and co-editor of the publication, as well as artist Wang Tuo, who created new works as part of the exhibition and publication.

Au cours du dernier mois, les participantes ges de 15 18 ans ont pris part des ateliers de recherche, derdaction et ddition dirigs par lquipe des programmes publics, avec la collaboration de lquipe des Publications du CCA, du designer graphiste Matthias Kreutzer (Our Polite Society) et du studio lAbricot. Le projet explore comment lauto-dition peut devenir un outil dobservation et de rflexion sur la ville.

Chaque participante a conu unzine combinant une dimension individuelle et une composante collective, reliant sa propre recherche une lecture partage du paysageurbain montralais, et rvlant les textures, traces et rcits qui le faonnent. Les publications ont t conues et imprimes laide de techniques de risographie prsentes au cours du programme.

Please join us for the launch of The UrbanUnknown, a collective zine project developed by the participants ofthe CCA Youth Collective.

Over the past months, participants agedfrom 15 to 18 have taken part in research, editing, and publishing workshops led by the Public Programs team, with contributions from CCA Publications, Matthias Kreutzerof Our Polite Society, and lAbricot studio. The project exploreshow self-publishing can become a tool for observing and reflecting on the city.

Each participant designed a zine that combines an individual and a shared component, connecting personal research with a collective view of Montrals urban landscape and uncovering the subtle textures, traces, and narratives that shape it. The works were designed and printed using risograph techniques introduced during the program.

Copies will be available at the CCA Bookstore.

noise cocoon est la fois une uvre dart sonore gnrative et un dispositif de diffusion multicanal fait sur mesure. Le systme capte et traite en temps rel les bruitsprsents dans le lieu o il se trouve, les redistribuant lauditeur de manire personnifie et intimiste. Le dispositif tantconstruit tel un mini-dme dun peu moins dun demi-mtre de diamtre, il est positionn au-dessus de la tte du participant et invite une coute rapproche et dlicate des sonorits in situ. Luvre sonore diffuse se dploie tel un microcosme singulier directement influenc par lenvironnement immdiat. Dans ce projet, le lieu de diffusion est considr comme un tre plus-quhumain cest--dire, une entit constitue de plusieurs lments (vivants ou non) interdpendants et en constante interaction. travers lamplification et la valorisation des bruits et autres subtilits acoustiques, luvre souligne la vitalit du lieu par une mise en vidence de soncaractre bruit unique et changeant, et en refltant lcosystme, la multitude dagents qui le compose. noise cocoon se veutun projet qui incite lauditoire percevoir le lieu de diffusion sous un nouveau jour : non pas comme une simple coquille vide, mais comme une entit part entire, elle-mme constitue dindividus actifves. Le terme bruit (souvent employ de manire pjorative comme tant drangeant ou involontaire) est ici utilis pour dfinir la matire premire acoustique de luvre. Or dans ce contexte-ci, les bruits du lieu sont clbrs plutt que dtre considrs comme parasites. Cette approche fait notamment cho la musique noise, plus spcifiquement au genre Onkykei originaire du Japon, style reconnu pour son traitement subtil etsporadique de la matire bruite.

noise cocoon is both a generative sound art piece and a custom-made multichannel broadcastingdevice. The system captures and processes the noises present in itssurroundings in real time, redistributing them to the listener in apersonalized and intimate way. The device is built like a mini-domemeasuring just under half a meterin diameter. It is positioned above the participants head, inviting them to listen closely and delicately to the in situ soundscape.The piece unfolds like a singularmicrocosm directly influenced by the immediate environment. In thisproject, the space is considered a more-than-human being that is, an entity made up of several (living and non-living) interdependent and constantly interacting elements. Through the amplification and appreciation of noises and otheracoustic subtleties, the work highlights the spaces vitality by emphasizing its unique and ever-shifting noisy character, and by reflecting its ecosystem, and the throng of agents that compose it. noise cocoon aims to encourage the audience to perceive the venue in a new light: not as an empty shell, but as an entity in its own right,itself composed of active individuals. The term noise (often used pejoratively to mean disturbing or unintentional) is used here to define the pieces acoustic raw material. In this context, the noises that permeate the space arecelebrated rather than consideredas parasites. This approach echoes noise music, more specifically the Onkykei genre originating in Japan, a style known for its subtle and sporadic treatment of noisy matter.

BIXI Thieves is a four-part comedic web series created by Nicolas Lebrun and Alissa Zilber. Across its 45 minute runtime, follow Nic as his search for a missing bike spirals into an absurd digital odyssey. Blending diegetic camerawork, the visual vernacular of the internet, and improvisational performance, BIXI Thieves stages an inquiry into truth, selfhood, and becoming in the digital age. The screening is accompanied by related materials and ephemera from the project, extending its world into the space, followed by music and informal gathering with the artists.

Launched this fall, Common Process has brought a group of artists together to work side by side, exchange approaches, and test out new ideas. The pilot cohort draws from the WCS community, MUTEK’s Incubator, and Eastern Bloc’s members network, supporting the development of interdisciplinary collaborations and opening space for new dialogues and creative possibilities to emerge.

Uniting from across continents to bring representation to the sport they love, Indigenous Rising laces up their skates to claim their space on the roller derby track. Indigenous Rising is the first team in roller derby history to break the barriers of representing a single country at the Roller Derby World Cup – igniting a movement that pulsates throughout the sport and within each other. Rising Through the Fray follows the team as it welcomes a new generation of players set on changing the face of roller derby – a sport that champions female empowerment and inclusivity but lacks diversity. With a compassionate and candid lens, filmmaker Courtney Montour weaves energetic on-track game play with tender moments in teammates’ daily lives as skaters from over 30 Indigenous Nations navigate and learn each other’s play styles at tournaments and find strength within each other to compete and skate onto the track with pride. Intimate portraits of teammates Sour Cherry, Krispy and Hawaiian Blaze reveal stories of displacement and disconnection from their culture and identities and the journey of finding belonging within team Indigenous Rising. Rising Through the Fray offers a poignant exploration of resiliency, healing and reconnection of a roller derby family with a bond that goes beyond sport.
