Pemberton (AKA Albertan rapper Cadence Weapon) drops by Montreal to launch his new book on "building a deeper relationship with music in the streaming era." Rollie Pemberton, in conversation with Peggy Hogan.

Quarterly networking event for Montreal's digital community. An evening to meet the community, discover projects and foster dialogue between the art, research and industry sectors. Born from an initiative of the Conseil des arts de Montréal and coordinated by MAPP_MTL, the event promotes sharing and cross-pollination between creators, artist centres, organizations, businesses and digital professionals. The 2026 edition of the PHI residency welcomes Eva Quintas, and Spoonful of Dirt, a collective formed by Andrea Williamson and Nina Pariser. Throughout the month of June, the public is invited to discover the emerging forms of their research and to contribute to them through this exhibition, as well as during a series of free public activities. While distinct in their approaches, the works presented here converge around shared concerns: questioning the environments we inhabit and shape, assessing the effects of human constructions on a diversity of living beings, and dreaming up futures in which more equitable modes of organization might emerge. In resonance with each other, these projects reveal different ways of inhabiting, perceiving, and relating to the territories we share, while opening onto the imagination of new configurations and modes of existence.

Escales musicales est une série de quatre concerts en plein air présentés dans les parcs du Plateau-Mont-Royal, créant des moments de rencontre intime entre artistes et public au cœur du quartier. Chaque escale met en lumière une tradition musicale portée par des artistes d'exception : Sareh Borna (kamanche – musique persane), Deo Munyakazi (inganga et voix – musique du Rwanda), Ran Wang (guzheng – musique de Chine) et Charles Cantin (violon traditionnel québécois). Tous les concerts sont entourés par le percussionniste Ziya Tabassian, favorisant un dialogue sensible entre les cultures. Le projet célèbre la diversité musicale et invite à une expérience immersive, accessible et profondément humaine. Ce concert, dédié à la musique perse, sera interprété par le duo Sareh Borna et Ziya Tabassian. Annulé en cas de pluie abondante.

Chaque année, une finale internationale couronne une championne ou un champion du monde. Le concept a également été adapté pour la télévision avec La fin des faibles, diffusée sur Télé-Québec.

Our "Courrier recommandé" series is stepping out of its usual format for a special edition featuring two artists we’re thrilled to bring together: Paul Piché and Étienne Coppée. On the agenda: a intergenerational encounter around words, music, and the French language.

CIBL 101.5 will broadcast a special cultural program live from Francos de Montréal to bring the excitement of the event to its listeners and to welcome the featured artists performing on the various stages. Interviews lasting 5 to 8 minutes will be conducted with them to discuss their show, their music, their artistic approach, and their creative universe.

Through a series of four outdoor concerts in the parks of Plateau-Mont-Royal, come and meet artists from diverse cultural backgrounds. Each concert celebrates cultural diversity at the crossroads of musical traditions from around the world. This concert, dedicated to Chinese music, will be performed by the duo Ran Wang and Ziya Tabassian. Musical Stopovers is a series of four open-air concerts presented in the parks of the Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood, creating intimate moments of connection between artists and audiences in the heart of the community. Each stopover highlights a musical tradition performed by exceptional artists: Sarah Borna (kamancheh - Persian music), Deo Munyakazi (inganga and vocals – Rwandan music), Ran Wang (guzheng – Chinese music), and Charles Cantin (traditional Quebec violin). All concerts are accompanied by percussionist Ziya Tabassian, fostering a meaningful dialogue between cultures. The project celebrates musical diversity and invites an immersive, accessible, and profoundly human experience. As part of the Cultural Action Support Program. Cancelled in case of heavy rain.

CISM 89.3 FM, University of Montreal’s college radio station, is coming down from its mountain perch for one evening only! Host Léonie Cabrol (L’échooo des luttes) will be live from l’Esplanade tranquille for the occasion, welcoming some of her favorite feminine artists from the 2026 programming.

Blending soul, gospel, and chamber pop, the album was recorded live to tape, a deliberate act of surrender to imperfection and presence. Its themes move through unconditional love, self-acceptance, Black heritage, and the quiet power of nurturing. The accompanying art film — shot in Jamaica — extends these themes into moving image.

It’s been eight years since Montreal’s The Barr Brothers released a full-length album. In that time, life pulled them in new directions – personally and professionally – altering the way they make music together. Their fourth studio album, Let it Hiss, isn’t just a new collection of songs. It’s a document of transformation. The making of this record marked a pivotal shift: a pause for reflection, a reckoning with vulnerability, and a reconnection between the two brothers who’ve spent over three decades making music side by side.  
“In 2022, we found ourselves at a breaking point,” says Brad Barr, the band’s guitarist, vocalist, and primary songwriter. “It was clear something had to change. The real story of this record is the story of that change and everything that came after.”  
“Let it Hiss is what happened when we stopped pretending everything was fine and finally listened to what was actually going on”, says Andrew.

In this Arts Chat, Kid Koala gives us a glimpse into his artistic world, giving participants the opportunity to virtually visit his studio and learn about his process. A multi-faceted artist, DJ, graphic novelist, performer, composer and director, whose work has spanned from film and video game soundtracks to playing in bands and live theatrical productions, Kid Koala shares his insights on music’s inherent ability to connect the dots between different artistic disciplines to audiences around the world.
The discussion will be held in English. The festival will provide access to an AI-powered simultaneous translation application available on mobile devices, offering translation into all languages.

Louisiana's Creole culture helped shape the New World and contributed to the emergence of jazz. But what remains of this unique, mixed-race society, with roots in France, Africa, the Caribbean, Spain and America? Maroon searches for the origins of this little-understood and endangered culture and show how it is doing today. In this second part of his La piste Amérique series, documentary filmmaker André Gladu continues his exploration of the Francophone presence in North America. Maroon is a vibrant travelogue that goes back into history in order to shed light on the present.

From the young prodigy’s beginnings in Little Burgundy to his triumphs on the international scene, this animated documentary by Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre explores the profound solitude of an artist constantly on tour. Set to the tunes of Peterson’s sometimes catchy, sometimes melancholy-tinged compositions, the film tells a heartfelt story about a life in jazz.

Will Scott III is an instrumental collective that explores the pedal steel from a fresh perspective, far removed from its traditional country roots. The project draws on soul grooves, organic energy, and cinematic atmospheres to create music that is both immersive and fluid.
Driven by hypnotic bass lines, grounded percussion, and soaring pedal steel melodies, the compositions emphasize collective interplay and feel. Each piece unfolds with a laid-back groove, blending retro and modern aesthetics. Will Scott III’s music invites both reflection and movement, creating a distinctive and enveloping sonic experience.

Devotion & the Black Divine
is a cinematic meditation on new Black motherhood and the spiritual upheaval it carries. Blending soul, gospel, and chamber pop, the album was recorded live to tape, a deliberate act of surrender to imperfection and presence. Its themes move through unconditional love, self-acceptance, Black heritage, and the quiet power of nurturing. The accompanying art film — shot in Jamaica — extends these themes into moving image.

This informal black-and-white portrait of Leonard Cohen shows him at age 30 on a visit to his hometown of Montreal, where the poet, novelist and songwriter comes "to renew his neurotic affiliations." He reads his poetry to an enthusiastic crowd, strolls the streets of the city, relaxes in this three-dollar-a-night hotel room and even takes a bath.

The Ottawa
Junior Jazz Band (OJJB) is an 18-piece big band featuring exceptional student
musicians in grades 7 through 10 from across the Ottawa region. Now celebrating
its 24th season, OJJB provides an exciting platform for young instrumentalists
to build on their middle school experiences and foster a lifelong passion for
the big band tradition.  OJJB has been awarded 24 consecutive Gold
Standards at the Capital Region Music Festival.  The band has been awarded
the Gold Standard at every performance they have had at Musicfest Canada's
National Competition.   OJJB has been featured at the Ottawa International
Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival and in 2009, traveled to Dallas to
perform at the University of North Texas Jazz Festival.  The band has had
the pleasure of performing on stage with jazz artists Mark Ferguson, Nick
Dyson, and Mike Tremblay. Anyone who aspires to be the next member of OJJB is

Jamaican-Canadian singer-songwriter Sammy Jackson has quickly emerged as one of the most compelling young voices on Canada’s music scene, with two EPs, a full-length album, and a 2021 Juno Awards win for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. She has performed on major stages including the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal and the Toronto Jazz Festival.
Her music blends jazz, R&B, and pop into a distinctive, personal style, shaped by both her vocal finesse and compositional voice. After her debut EP

(2016), she gained wider recognition with
With You
(2020), a JUNO-winning project created in part with vocalist Jacqueline Teh and a collective of leading Canadian musicians.
Released in late 2024, her debut album
In The Meantime
reflects her current life as a mother, wife, and graduate student at the University of Toronto—an intimate, song-driven work where emotional honesty takes center stage.

Born in 1960 in Paris and a citizen of both the United States and Canada, self-taught pianist and composer Jean-Michel Pilc has collaborated with many major jazz figures such as Roy Haynes, Michael Brecker, Kenny Garrett, Chris Potter, and Richard Bona. He has also served as musical director for Harry Belafonte and performed in duo with Jessye Norman.
Based in New York since 1995, he formed a trio with François Moutin and Ari Hoenig, with whom he recorded several acclaimed albums. His international career includes numerous solo, trio, and collaborative projects, as well as prestigious composition commissions, including a Guggenheim Fellowship.
Also recognized as an educator, he has taught at NYU, The New School, and later at McGill University, where he became a full professor and an active figure in the Montreal jazz scene. An author and creator of many improvisation teaching resources, he continues to lead an active career combining performance, recording, and education.

Do you know gamer jazz? It’s a musical style created by and for Ping Pong Go, a duo with outsized ambitions, formed by two of the most prolific musicians on the Quebec scene, Vincent Gagnon and P.E. Beaudoin.
Spotted on stage with Hubert Lenoir, Lou-Adriane Cassidy, Ariane Roy, Keith Kouna, and countless other artists, they unveiled their playful, instrumental musical concept in 2022 with a first album on Popop Records, ultimately bringing nerds and athletes together under a single soundtrack worthy of both the Olympics and vintage video games.
A true UFO in the jazz world, both on stage and on record, Ping Pong Go is back with a second album boldly titled SMASH COMBAT. We wish them all the medals and trophies.
They just released their new album Smash Combat! The first single "Sam Bozen" paves the way to a new era of gamer jazz, the very unique music style o Ping Pong Go.

Curtis Nowosad is a JUNO-nominated, NYC-based jazz drummer, composer, educator, and recording artist originally from Winnipeg, Canada. Based in New York for over a decade, he has become an active figure on both the NYC and international jazz scenes as a bandleader and sideman.
He has performed with a wide range of leading jazz artists across generations, including Jazzmeia Horn, Jane Monheit, Marc Cary, Braxton Cook, and many others, touring extensively across North America, Europe, and Asia. He has also shared the stage with jazz legends such as Ron Carter, Dave Liebman, Jimmy Owens, and Candido Camero, and regularly performs at major venues and festivals.
As a leader, he has released several projects exploring jazz, social themes, and experimentation, including

. His upcoming album

features all-original music and reflects themes of healing and self-reflection.

Award-winning guitarist-singer-songwriter Cécile Doo-Kingué is rapidly earning a stellar reputation and a place amongst Canada’s current roster of great guitarists. Powerful and raw, the NYC-born Montrealer is a force of nature whose lyrics, sound and exceptional stage presence make for an enthralling and intimate experience. The 5-time Maple Blues Awards nominee has released four albums to critical acclaim, has opened for, shared a stage and/or recorded with Montreal Jubilation Choir, Bernard Purdie, John Prine, Blind Boys of Alabama, Canned Heat, Angelique Kidjo, and Eric Andersen amongst many.

Raised in the wilds of Vancouver Island, 25-year-old Elysia Biro (pronounced Eh-lee-sha Bee-row) is a technically gifted singer, songwriter, and pianist. A student of classical piano at age 4, Biro began writing her own music at 13 while teaching herself how to play jazz by ear after being inspired by the genre’s improvisational free form. After receiving her diploma in classical piano from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto and graduating high school at age 16, Biro earned her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies for piano and voice before moving to England to complete her Master’s of Music degree at the University of York. 

Crafting her unique sound from an expansive fusion of genres, Elysia Biro’s songwriting blends modern pop form and classical technique with jazz sensibilities. An expressive and introspective songwriter, her warm, soulful vocals reflect her journey through self-discovery, love, and introspection, painting a compelling portrait of life as she knows it right now, blossoming between seasons. Biro has quickly amassed a dedicated audience on social media through her captivating vocals and virtuosic transcriptions of jazz solos. Now based in Los Angeles where she writes, records and produces, Elysia Biro continues to combine worlds, creating sonic sanctuaries all her own.
