Montreal Cultural Calendar

Since its inception in 1992, the Faculty of Fine Arts Biennial has showcased the varied practices of teachers from the Department of Fine Arts, offering students and thecommunity the opportunity to glimpse their work outside of the classroom.

Their contributions to this exhibition span a variety of mediapainting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and the written word, among othersillustrating a profound engagement with both traditional practices and new technologies. At the core of the many explorations that this exhibition offers are complexities surrounding the environment (both natural and built); the human condition and the relationships that we forge; the material world; and more intangible elements linked to our existence. Through the work, one can gain insight not only into the artists themselves, but also into the evolving artistic landscape that shapes the Fine Arts department.

By bridging theory and practice, this exhibition nourishes students in their own work, and contributes to a larger dialogue within the artistic community. (Amanda Beattie)

Lines Drawn in Sand Become a Valley rassemble une srie d'uvres vido qui rflchissent sur les jeux de guerre et les simulations, en questionnant leurs usages. Sagit-il de reprsentations de la guerre ou de modles potentiels pour la guerre ? Plus encore, comment les idologies lies la guerre et aux mesures d'urgence dpendent-elles de l'amalgame entre le rel et la reprsentation pour maintenir leur lgitimit ?

Avec les films Janus et Acting Exercise: Demon Possession, Miljohn Ruperto voque des tats liminaires entre la vie et un possible au-del, testant nos seuils de perception. Steven Cottingham's practice emphasizesthe constructed nature of images,not to underline their fakeness, but rather to reveal the technological systems and social conditionsthrough which meaning emerges. Lines Drawn in Sand Become a Valley brings together a series of video works that reflect on wargames andsimulations, questioning their use. Do they act as representations of war or, rather, as models for war? Further, how do ideologies of war and emergency depend on the conflation between real and representational to sustain legitimacy?

The films Janusand Acting Exercise: Demon Possession by Miljohn Ruperto test perception thresholds by conjuring liminal states of being between life and a possible beyond. Transitions from one form into the next are anticipated yet never total. This quizzical simultaneity of almost antagonist presences is held in placeby dilating temporalities, startling processes of perceiving, believing, and knowing.

''Nos esprits crent notre ralit'' prsente une sriede sculptures en cramique qui relient le pass et le prsent, en s'inspirant des traditions prcolombiennes pour aborder des questions contemporaines telles que leschangements climatiques et la sant mentale. Enracin dans une profonde rvrence pour les origines autochtones de l'artiste, son travail rend hommage l'histoire tout en soulignant le lien inextricable entre notre sant collective et celle de la plante, ainsi que l'impact de notre environnementsur notre quilibre mental.

Kimberly Orjuela est une artiste visuelle ne en Colombie et base Montral. Son travail explore les moyens de dcoloniser nos esprits en rcrivant des histoires dvalorises grce l'argile, tout en prservant sa culture et en honorant ses anctres.

The artist will give a guided tour of her exhibition starting at 6:30 pm. Bilingual event.

''Our Minds Create Our Reality'' presents a series of ceramic sculptures that bridge the past and present, drawing on pre-Columbian traditions to address contemporary issues like climate change and mental health. Rooted in a deep reverence for the artists Indigenous ancestry, her work pays tribute to history while highlighting the inextricable link between our collective health and that of the planet,and the impact of our environmenton our mental equilibrium.

Kimberly Orjuela is a Colombian-born visual artist currently based in Montreal. Her work explores ways to decolonize our minds by rewriting undervalued histories through clay,preserving her culture, and honouring her ancestors.

Dans la nouvelle exposition deThomas Kneubhler, The Dividing Line, cest l'aspect dsordonn du paysage frontalier bulgare qui est mis en relief. Ici, le pass et le prsent se rencontrent. En traversant lespace de la galerie, divis par une longue et froide clture en acier mesurant trente pieds [environ 9 mtres], nous voyons des murs sovitiques en dcrpitude qui se trouvent juxtaposs des technologies de surveillance modernes.

In Thomas Kneubhlers new exhibition, The Dividing Line, the messiness of theBulgarian borderscape comes into sharp relief. The past and presentcomingle. Walking through the gallery space, cut apart by a 30 footlong cold steel fence, we see crumbling Soviet walls juxtaposed with modern surveillance technologies.

La pratique multidisciplinaire de Milutin Gubash joue avec les codes narratifs de la vido, de la sculpture, de la photographie et dela performance. Laurat du Prix Louis-Comtois de la Ville de Montral en 2019, et rcipiendaire de nombreuses bourses, prix et rsidences internationales, le travail de Milutin Gubash a t largement expos travers le Canada, les tats-Unis et lEurope depuis2000.

N Soleure, en Suisse,Thomas Kneubhler dtient une matrise en arts visuels, obtenue en 2003, de l'Universit Concordia Montral. Depuis, il poursuit une pratique artistique base sur la recherche, qui comprend le travail sur le terrain dans des endroits isols et sur des sites dont l'accs est restreint. Abordantles questions du pouvoir, de l'exploitation des ressources naturelles ou des effets des nouvelles technologies sur la socit, ses uvres ont t largement prsentes, notamment au Centre culturel canadien Paris, au Muse d'artcontemporain de Montral, la Videonale.15 du Kunstmuseum Bonn, ainsi qu'aux Rencontres internationales de Paris et de Berlin. Ila reu le Swiss Art Award en 2012 et a t boursier de rechercheau Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) Sofia, Bulgarie, en 2018.

Milutin Gubashs multidisciplinary practice plays with narrative codes of video, sculpture, photography and performance. Laureate of the Prix Louis Comtois for the Cityof Montreal in 2019, and recipient of numerous grants, awards, and
international residencies, MilutinGubashs work has been widely exhibited throughout Canada, UnitedStates and Europe since 2000.

Born in Solothurn, Switzerland, Thomas Kneubhler graduated with an MFA from Concordia University, Montreal in 2003. Since then, Kneubhler has pursued a research-based art practice including fieldwork inremote locations and on sites where
access is restricted. Addressing questions of power, the exploitation of natural resources, or the effects of new technology on society, his work has been presented widely, among others at the Centre culturel canadien, Paris, the Muse dart contemporain de Montral, the Videonale.15 at the Kunstmuseum Bonn, and at Les Rencontres International in Paris and Berlin. He received the Swiss Art Award in2012, and was a research fellow at the Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 2018.
