Book launch: The Gates of the Sea: Migration and Rescue at the Edges of Europe, with Luna Vives


Rescuers with Spain’s civilian maritime search and rescue agency call themselves the “firefighters of the sea.” But as migration grows more politicized, their mission is being reshaped. This book examines how sea migration is transforming rescue work in Spain—and how rescuers, alongside their majority union CGT, are resisting these pressures while forging new spaces of solidarity across borders.

Luna Vives is a political geographer and associate professor in the Department of Geography, Université de Montréal. Her work focuses on how governments use borders to exclude specific groups of people.

Les sauveteurs de l’agence civile espagnole de recherche et de sauvetage en mer se décrivent comme les « pompiers de la mer ». Mais à mesure que la migration devient un enjeu de plus en plus politisé, leur mission se transforme. Cet ouvrage examine comment la migration maritime redéfinit le travail de sauvetage en Espagne — et comment les sauveteurs, aux côtés de leur syndicat majoritaire, la CGT, résistent à ces pressions tout en ouvrant de nouveaux espaces de solidarité par-delà les frontières.

Luna Vives est géographe politique et professeure agrégée au Département de géographie de l’Université de Montréal. Ses recherches portent sur la manière dont les gouvernements utilisent les frontières pour exclure certains groupes de personnes.

Venez observer les nuages au parc Marie-Victorin lors d’une performance immersive des Sœurs de l’Ordre céleste de la Néphologie, une pseudo-secte fictive de deux nonnes atmosphériques menée par Horizon Factory (Erin Hill et Nina Vroemen). Vous serez guidé·e·s par une expérience audio méditative où les Sœurs vous invitent à scruter le ciel à la recherche de l’invisible.

Inspiré par la compositrice expérimentale Pauline Oliveros et ses pratiques de méditation sonore et d’écoute profonde, le concept de « Deep Gazing », ou de « regard profond », développé par les Sœurs conjugue l’observation et l’identification des nuages à la prévision du futur, alliant environnement et spiritualité de façon à explorer les phénomènes et les récits atmosphériques qui jalonnent l’imaginaire collectif. Alors que Pauline Oliveros pose la question « que signifie écouter ? », les Sœurs demandent ce que signifie regarder.


📱Les participant·e·s doivent apporter un téléphone intelligent ainsi que des écouteurs pour prendre part à la performance.
L’expérience audio est disponible en français et en anglais.

Meryem Yildiz x thisquietarmy: Backbone

Meryem Yildiz is a Montreal-based poet of Turkish andFrench Canadian descent. Winner of The Malahat Reviews Far Horizons Award for Poetry as well as the Quebec Writers Federation carte blanche Prize, her work explores identity, culture, and the psyche. Backbone is her first book.

Montreal-based artist Eric Quach, known as thisquietarmy, celebrates 20 years of crafting experimental electronic and free jazz-infused heavy drone guitar music. Over the years, he has released work on labels such as Consouling Sounds, Midira, Utech, Aurora Borealis, Shelter Press, and Denovali, and has collaborated with members of Voivod, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Amenra, and Nadja. He has performed over a thousand live concerts across 40 countries, including appearances at internationally renowned festivals such as Le Guess Who?, Biennale Nemo, Amplifest, Dunk! Festival, Mutek, FIMAV and Red Bull MusicAcademy.

On a side note, over the 25+ years they've known each other, Yildiz has lent her vocals on two thisquietarmy tracks. She alsocontributed her artwork photography on Quach's multiple musical projects' artwork such as Destroyalldreamers, Some Became Hollow Tubes & Mains de givre.

Cloud Circuit:

Poetry-sound project Cloud Circuit draws inspiration from communication glitches and lost connections. PoetDeanna Radford channels her iterative text reams into deconstructedwords of mouth, while soundartist Jeremy Young employs sine waves in flux, 1/4" magnetic tape,and captured radio airs. In performance, Cloud Circuits approachis collaborative and improvisational, with their sound being composed, dissected, and refracted.

In 2020, Cloud Circuits debut EP, Bur sting brea k'r, was released by Archive Officielle, and they performed as part of Vicky Mettler and Zach Scholes Live in Concreteseries. In 2023, they issued a live recording of the experience on 10 lathe-cut vinyl and cassette.

In the spring of 2023, Cloud Circuit performed in Berlin and wereinvited Ambassadors of the Embassy of Utopia at the Tartu International Literary Festival Prima Vistain Estonia. In the fall of 2024, they completed a tour of Western Canada, featuring performances at send + receive: a festival of soundin Winnipeg and at Bug Incision with New Works Calgary.

The doors open at 6:30 p.m. We will begin with the traditional opening circle, followed by a 20 to 30 minute warm-up inspired by somatic and other approaches allowing contact with one's own corporeality before making contact with other dancers.
After this, the jam goes on until 8:30 p.m., and we will hold a short closing circle. Dancers of all levels are welcome.
As always, if you have a cold, flu or COVID symptoms, please stay home!
Please arrive before 19h30-20h00 because the main entry door might be locked.

Amanda Gutirrez et Nik Forrest prsentent une performance collaborative faonne par la radio FM, les signaux VLF et les frquences radio terrestres comme matire sonore principale, tisse travers la synthse semi-modulaire. Estompant les frontires habituellesentre transmission et rception,soi et autrui, ici et l, le perceptible et l'imperceptible, les artistes proposent des formes fluides et non binaires d'coute, de son et de devenir. En amplifiant cequi est gnralement inaudibleces courants fantomatiques qui chappent notre conscienceiels demandent : qu'est-ce qui chappe encore notre attention, et qui d'autre reste inaudible ?

Amanda Gutirrez and Nik Forrest present a collaborative performance shaped by FM radio, VLF signals, andterrestrial radio frequencies as their primary sonic material, woven together through semi-modular synthesis. Blurring the usual boundaries between transmission and reception, self and other, here and there, the perceptible and the imperceptible, the artists propose fluid, non-binary forms of listening, sounding, and becoming. By amplifying what is typically unheardthose ghostly currents that slip beneath our awarenessthey ask: what else escapes our attention, and who else remains unheard?

La guitariste franaise Nina Garcia et la violoncelliste new-yorkaise Leila Bordreuil sunissent enduo bruitiste et hyper-amplifi ou leurs amplificateurs assument un lien privilgi comme partenaire de jeu. La pratique de Garcia, inspire par le punk rock, Sonic Youth et un dsir constant de repousser les limites, consiste manipuler les cordes de sa guitare d'innombrables faons cratives. Bordreuil, anime par un intrt froce pour le son pur et le timbre inhrent, dfie la pratiqueconventionnelle du violoncelle avec des techniques tendues extrmes et des mthodes damplification inhabituelles. Ensemble, elles taillent le son et fouillent le chaos pour faire merger une musique inoue comprenant des silences forcs, des larsens avorts etdes boucles manufacturs.

Guitarist Nina Garcia and cellist LeilaBordreuil join forces in a noisy and highly-amplified duo where power and fragility intersect with palpable tension. Garcias approachinspired by punk rock, Sonic Youth and a constant desire to pushboundariesconsists of mistreating the strings of her guitar in countless creative ways. Bordreuil,driven by a fierce interest in pure sound and inherent texture, challenges conventional cello practice through extreme techniques and unorthodox amplification methods. Together, they excavate sound and delve into chaos to create unprecedented musical experiences involving forced silences, aborted feedback and manufactured loops.

Autechre, consisting of Sean Booth and Rob Brown, released their most recent music in November 2024 on Warp Records. AE_2022 is a series of extended pieces recorded in front of live audiences around the world between 2022 and 2024 (so far).

In 2025, Autechre will embark on theirfirst North American tour in ten years, including a stop in Montral on October 24. The ticket sale has ended; no exchanges, no refunds.

Intro to Latex Construction: Unnatural Techniques for Natural Rubber

Artexte priorise les projets qui explorent et valorisent des pratiques, des thmatiques ou des rcits artistiques historiquement sous-reprsents ou marginaliss dans lhistoire de lart canadien et le milieu artistique national, ainsi que des projets qui dvoilent et contribuent laccessibilit de la documentation insouponne et mconnue de la collection.

Artexte offre aux rsident.e.s un soutien la recherche, ainsi quunespace de travail muni doutils(ordinateur, numriseur et photocopieur). Une rsidence varie entre un et trois mois, selon les besoins du projet. Les rsidentes sont galement invites partager ltat de leur recherche lors dune prsentation publique ou dune entrevue publie en fin de parcours sur le site dArtexte. Artexte accorde un cachet total de 2 000 $ aux rsidentes slectionnes (individus ou collectifs).

As part of its research residency program, Artexte invites three researchers (individuals and/or collectives) from all contemporary art disciplines to explore the collections documentary resources and deepen their research on a particular topic of their choice.

Projects will be selected for their direct connection to the Artexte collection and institutional mission, while also demonstrating sensitivity towards the research interests and needs of the local and national art communities.

Artexte prioritizes projectsthat explore and highlight artistic practices, themes, or narratives that have been historically underrepresented or marginalized in Canadian art history and the national art scene, as well as projects that reveal and improve access to overlooked and lesser-known documentation from the collection.

Artexte is committed to providing residents with research support and a workspace equipped with tools (computer, scanner, photocopier). A research residency spans from one to three months, depending on the needs of each project. Residents are also invited to present their research during a public presentation or an interview published on our website at the end of their residency. Artexte grants a total fee of $2,000 to selected residents (individuals or collectives).

Residency periods:
Fall: between October and December 2026
Winter: between January and March 2027
Spring: between April and June 2027

Dans cette histoire de mort, de meurtre, dtude de march, de vengeance et de surnaturel, deux amies s'unissent pour essayer de comprendre comment vivre tout en tant harceles par les messages malveillants des morts. En combinant l'utilisation du film noir et blanc, de la vido couleur et de mthodes de tournage empruntes au drame, la comdie et au documentaire, adopte une approche du rcit dans laquelle la tche de dpartager la vrit de la fiction, et la comdie du documentaire, mne une forme largie o les morts peuvent parler aux vivants et des gens dans la rue interagir avec des personnages fictifs.


Berlin-Mitte, annes 1980. Un vampire erre dans la ville, prisonnier dune existence dont il ne peut se dfaire. Insensible aux crucifix,indiffrent la lumire du jour, il est condamn non pas par sa nature, mais par son incapacit mourir. Pourtant, il nabandonne pas sa qute : trouver enfinun moyen dchapper lternit. Jusquau jour o lespoir prend une forme inattendue est un hommage aux films de Carl Dreyer, Russ Meyer, Andy Warhol et Ed Wood.

It is the story of mortality, murder, market research, revenge and the supernatural, as two friends come together to try to figure out how to live, while being besieged by malignant messages fromthe dead. Combining the use of black and white film, color video, and dramatic, comedic and documentary methods of shooting, takes an approach to narrative in which the task of sorting out truth from fiction, and documentary from situation comedy, leads to anexpanded form in which the dead can speak to the living and people on the street can talk to fictional characters.


Berlin-Mitte, 1980s. A vampire roams the city, trapped in an existence he cannot escape. Immune to crucifixes, unaffected by daylight, he is cursed not by his nature, but by his inability to die. Yet he refuses to giveup his search for an end to eternity. Until one day, hope takes an unexpected form is a tribute to the films of Carl Dreyer, Russ Meyer, Andy Warhol, and Ed Wood.

In HEX: Begin Again, Laura Taler combines a simple mirror trick with strategies of masquerade to create a world of ritual and séance. Reaching into the past, Taler recites a series of remarkably contemporary historical texts by Maya Deren, Claude Cahun, and Susan Coolidge. These women’s carefully crafted and yet disruptive works sought to create new realities through artistic and technological means—realities where a self-aware female body is simultaneously sexual, intellectual, spiritual, practical, and unbounded by social mores. Through repetition and fragmentation, HEX: Begin Again questions our relationships to past and present technologies, the relativity of absolute value, and long held prejudices about female power. Visual clues punctuate the monologue and point to transformation and new beginnings. By channeling these women, who self-identified as outsiders, Taler weaves movement, cinema, and text to form a complex and playful language of resistance. Romanian-born Canadian artist Laura Taler works across a range of media including performance, film, sound, sculpture, and installation. Her practice explores how memory and history are linked to movement and how the body is able to carry the past without being oppressed by it. Taler began her career as a contemporary dance choreographer before turning her attention to filmmaking and visual art. Her work has been praised for its unique combination of emotional resonance, wit, and striking visuals. She has been a resident at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Centro Cultural Recoleta (Buenos Aires), Carleton Immersive Media Studio (Ottawa), Ottawa Dance Directive, Unpack Studio (Havana) and a fellow at the Institute for Cultural Inquiry (Berlin). Awards include a Gold Hugo from the Chicago International Film Festival, the Best Experimental Documentary award from Hot Docs!, Best of the Festival from New York’s Dance on Camera Festival, and SAW Gallery’s Dennis Tourbin Prize for New Performance. Her public art audio work MONAHAN was awarded the 2024 Creative City Network of Canada’s Public Art Legacy Award. To mark the 30th anniversary of her first film, the village trilogy, screenings and master classes will take place in 2025-26 across Canada.Heures d’ouverture :

QUEERS AT THE TABLE is an anthology of essays, comics, andrecipes that reveals the dynamic and transformative relationship between queerness and food

Food haslong played an important role in queer culture. Lesbian- and queer women-run feminist restaurants, cafes, and coffeehouses have been safe spaces for queer and trans folkwhere gender norms can be challenged and where female authority is legitimized. During the AIDS epidemic, gay men and their allies centred food as an expression of collective care for those who needed itmost. And queer and trans folk have asserted themselves in a restaurant culture largely controlled bywhite cisgender men.

Queers at the Table celebrates the various intersections between queers and food. In its essays, comics, and recipes, the book shows how this shared culture fosters connections, defies norms, honours legacies, and creates community. Taylor Hartson and Tristian Lee write about a queer farming community in which queerness is part of a broad network ofliving things to be enjoyed and shared; Danielle Kydd writes about food security issues as faced by LGBTQ2S+ folk; and Blue Delliquanti's comic on urban foraging in Minneapolis demonstrates the role of aqueer friend group in a local ecosystem.

In full colour throughout, Queers at the Table is a diverseand enriching anthology that reveals the myriad nurturing ways thatqueerness informs food productionand restaurant culture and how food empowers, transforms, and unites queer and trans folk.

Megan J. Elias (they/them) is director of the Food Studies Program at Boston University and an associate professor. They are the author of five books about food history, including Food on the Page: Cookbooksand American Culture (University of Pennsylvania Press). Alex D. Ketchum (she/her) is an assistant professor atthe Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies of McGillUniversity. She is the author of several books, including Ingredients for Revolution: A History of American Feminist Restaurants, Cafes, and Coffeehouses (Concordia University Press). She lives in Montreal, Quebec.

Through a new series of watercolours, videos, and an installation, Frey delivers a semi-autobiographical narrative in which the artist engages in dialogue with the machine.

In 2021, McGill University celebrated its bicentennial anniversary, reflecting on contributions to research, education, and other successes.The universitys founding within the context of nineteenth-century Atlantic capitalism requires that a deeper account engage with themore complex and difficult elements of its history.

McGill in History brings together diverse historiographies and perspectives to critically examine how McGill has been implicated in power structures and is the product of conflicting ideologies. The book broadens the historical frame of critical university studies, showing how the university can serve as a model for understanding power in modern society.

This fall, Galerie delUQAM invites visitors to the highly-anticipated exhibition by UQAM alumnus David Altmejd. Work bythis internationally renowned sculptor will be presented in Montreal for the first time in ten years.Curated by Louise Dry, Directorof Galerie de lUQAM, the exhibition "David Altmejd. Agora" unites almost thirty heads and busts, which are emblematic of the artists sculptural practice and were made between 1999 and 2025. Ce livre prsente plus de cinq dcennies de la pratique photographique de Clara Gutsche, qui documente les traces de la vie urbaine travers le Canada, les tats-Unis et lEurope occidentale des paysages de parcs et des vitrines de magasins aux ruines industrielles. Aux cts de ces paysage urbains, les portraits raliss par Gutsche dans des couvents, descoles et des maisons familialesexplorent lidentit, les relations et le passage du temps. En noir et blanc comme en couleur, lesimages de Gutsche (dont plusieurssries font partie de la collection du CCA) remettent en question les traditions documentaires, mlant lobservation une composition dlibre. Des usines en dcrpitude aux moments familiaux intimes, ses photographies sur la photographie refltent un engagement profond et durable avec les qualits matrielles, formelles et mmorielles du mdium. Please join us for aconversation around the book Clara Gutsche, published on the occasion of the 14th annual Scotiabank Photography Award.

The book collects over five decades of Clara Gutsches photographic practice documenting traces of urban life across Canada, the United States, and Western Europefrom parkscapes and shop windows to industrial ruins. Alongside these urban landscapes, her staged portraitsset in convents, schools, and family homesexplore identity, relationships, and the passage of time. Spanning both black-and-white and colour photography, Gutsches imagesa rich collection of which are part of the CCA Collectionchallenge documentary traditions, blending observation with deliberate composition. From decaying factories to intimate family moments, her photographs about photography reflect a deep and enduring engagementwith the mediums material, formal, and memorial qualities. The book is co-published by Steidl and Scotiabank Photography Award.

Clara Gutsche is the winner of the 2024 Scotiabank Photography Award. In this event, she presents her photographic practice and engagement with the medium in conversation with Phyllis Lambert.

The Empire Strikes Back: The Evolution of Legal Restrictions on Strikes in Québec and Canada

As strikes rates have risen in recent years across Québec and Canada, so too have government efforts to restrict them. These efforts are part of a long Canadian tradition of state repression of strikes, although they have evolved over time.

What is behind these efforts to suppress strikes? How and why have they changed over time? How do they affect collective bargaining? Why isn’t arbitration a suitable alternative? And why do governments keep doing this? Join a panel of labour experts and legal practitioners for a round-table discussion of these and other important questions related to efforts to suppress workers’ right to strike.

La troisime confrence Architecture comme sujet dintrt public appuie le Rseau de recherche du CCA, une entit qui rassemble les anciens participants prs de quatre dcennies de programmes de recherche au CCA. Cette confrence annuelle explore le thme de la bourse Architecture comme sujet dintrt public 2025, en posant la question suivante : comment construire des relations?

Cette troisime confrence consisteen un dialogue entre Nishat Awan,Shahana Rajani et Dima Srouji, chacune apportant son point de vue unique sur la manire dont les relations peuvent tre cres et entretenues grce des pratiquesde contre-cartographie, des mdias qui les rendent visible et des tactiques de mise au jour. The third Architecture as Public Concern Lecture supports the CCA Research Network, an entity bringing together alumni from almost four decadesof research programs at the CCA. This annual lecture explores the theme of the 2025 Architecture as Public Concern Fellowship, which asks, how can we build relation?

This third lecture is a dialogue between Nishat Awan, Shahana Rajani,and Dima Srouji, with each bringing their unique perspectives on how relation can be created and maintained through practices of counter-mapping, media that render visible, and tactics of unearthing. Together, they foreground how architecture holds the power and responsibility to create unique modalitiesof relation: between groups of people, between human and nonhuman worlds, between built forms and ecologies, and between multiple localities that are connected through networks of abundance and collectivity.

Vivid and turbulent, Hawksworth's cacophony of paintings charts an exhilarating collapse, where chaos and order are inseparably entwined.

Showcasing the artist's characteristic accelerated style and exceptional technique, City of Habits also features Hawksworth's recent experiments in manipulating letterform as a formal rather than communicative device. Overlapping forms draw from découpage, stamping, and printmaking, but, in their simultaneous acknowledgement and refusal of an imposed flatness and order, they turn Dada-esque, nonsensical, and disruptive. Here, typological conventions are pulled and stretched into illegible ends, exposing language as a fragile architecture—one that brilliantly unravels into gesture and noise.

Presented in partnership with Cooper Cole, Antecedent Conditions For A Landslide draws on the structural relationships between land, body, and technology, considering how these entanglements shape migratory movement and the transfer of knowledge across time and space.

Taking inspiration from the writings of academics such as Édouard Glissant, Katherine McKittrick, and Clyde Woods, the exhibition reflects on notions of relation, geography, and collective memory as they inform diasporic experience. The exhibition will take place in two galleries in two different cities, with one iteration in Toronto and another in Montreal, a dual presentation that expands the project's conceptual scope by highlighting movement, circulation, and translation, all key concerns in Hunter's practice.
