La deuxième conférence L’architecture comme sujet d’intérêt public vient appuyer la création récente du Réseau de recherche du CCA, une entité qui rassemble les anciens étudiants des programmes de recherche menés au CCA depuis près de quarante ans. Cette conférence annuelle explore le thème de la bourse L’architecture comme sujet d’intérêt public de 2024 qui pose cette fois la question suivante : «Où le travail aboutit-il? » Elle s’inscrit aussi dans la volonté du Réseau de recherche du CCA de poursuivre les conversations entamées par nos boursiers pendant leur résidence au CCA, et de définir collectivement les enjeux liés à l’environnement bâti mondial qui sont au premier plan de notre travail.

Les participants à tous nos programmes de recherche menés depuis la création du CCA sont automatiquement inscrits au Réseau de recherche du CCA. La conférence annuelle « L’Architecture comme sujet d’intérêt public » se déroule en ligne et est ouverte au public.

Cette deuxième conférence consiste en un dialogue entre Jane Mah Hutton et Thandi Loewenson sur la réparation en tant que pratique concrète et conceptuelle pouvant ramener au centre le territoire et les revendications qu’il suscite au sein des communautés. Leur conversation mettra l’accent sur la manière dont les communautés peuvent participer aux questions que nous élaborons en tant que chercheurs, et s’intéressera en particulier aux politiques et aux lieux de ces communautés avec un point de vue plus terre à terre, en observant les situations où les hypothèses sur le privilège institutionnel, la survivance coloniale et le racisme structurel convergent souvent. Une conversation animée par Arièle Dionne-Krosnick, Georgios Eftaxiopoulos, Nokubekezela Mchnu, Sara Stevens et Huda Tayob, membres du comité de pilotage du Réseau de recherche du CCA, suivra.

The second Architecture as Public Concern Lecture supports the recent creation of the CCA Research Network, an entity bringing together alumni from almost four decades of research programs at the CCA. This annual lecture explores the theme of the 2024 Architecture as Public Concern Fellowship, which asks “where does the work land?”. It also aligns with the ambition of the CCA Research Network to continue the conversations our Fellows began during their residencies at the CCA, and to chart collectively the issues related to the global built environment that are at the forefront of our work.

Participants in any of our Research programs since the founding of the CCA are automatically enrolled in the CCA Research Network. The annual Architecture as Public Concern Lecture will take place online and is open to the public.

This second lecture is a dialogue between Jane Mah Hutton and Thandi Loewenson investigating reparation as a concrete and conceptual practice that can centre land and the claims it makes on behalf of communities. Their conversation will foreground how communities can participate in the questions we craft as researchers, examining the politics and places of these communities from a more ground-level perspective by looking at sites where assumptions about institutional privilege, colonial survivance, and structural racism often coalesce. Following Olúfẹ́mi O Táíwò’s recent call in Reconsidering Reparations to engage with reparation as a “construction project,” the 2024 Architecture as Public Concern Lecture considers how research practices are intimately and sometimes unconsciously tied to land-based paradigms of enclosure, refusal, extraction, and repair, ones that that demand critique, renewal, and occasional revaluing.

The event will open with Mah Hutton and Loewenson sharing their current research projects, followed by a conversation moderated by CCA Research Network Steering Committee Members Arièle Dionne-Krosnick, Georgios Eftaxiopoulos, Nokubekezela Mchnu, Sara Stevens, and Huda Tayob.

FAEP réunit des chercheur.es établi.es et émergent.es autour d’un mandat d’enrichir le discours photographique, qu’il soit artistique, scientifique, social ou pédagogique, et ce, tout en redéfinissant les études photographiques — et ses savoirs — telle une constellation d’expériences.

« Dans les années 1980, Marie-France Brière se rend à Pietrasanta en Italie, ville de la Toscane d’origine médiévale, considérée comme la capitale du traitement artistique de plusieurs matières, dont le marbre. [...] Brière revient à Montréal avec des blocs de marbre carien pour poursuivre sa trajectoire : remodeler l’espace-temps de la pierre parmi ses strates et ses interstices. Encore à ce jour, en ciselant les couches de sens de cette matière à la formation irréversible, la statuaire éprouve les possibilités de transformation — à la fois de révélation et de disparition — de celle-ci. Le marbre est un amas de pression (im)prévisible, pour le moins difficile à interpréter. » — Jean-Michel Quirion

𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲-𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗲 développe depuis plusieurs années une recherche orientée vers la sculpture et réfléchit aux différents enjeux de son intégration dans l’espace public. Au moyen de divers traitements et agencements, elle élabore des structures qui réorganisent le dedans et le dehors, la surface et sa doublure, dans la perspective d’accroître les tensions de la matière inerte pour concrétiser des formes à partir des concepts de plasticité et de résistance. Détentrice d’une maîtrise en arts visuels de l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), boursière du Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) et du Conseil des arts du Canada (CAC) à plusieurs reprises, Marie-France Brière a également obtenu le Prix Louis-Comtois en 1996. Une monographie offrant une vue d’ensemble de son travail a été produite et éditée par Plein Sud Édition en 2022. L'artiste vit et travaille à Montréal.

KAREN TRASK et DAVID JHAVE JOHNSTON

« Tout a commencé quand Karen a envoyé un premier poème à Jhave, qui lui avait offert d'être le témoin de son processus. Puis Jhave a répondu par un poème qui faisait écho à celui de Karen, mais en n’en inversant les mots, le sens et le rythme. Un échange quotidien s'en est suivi de manière spontanée. À ce jour, plus de 200 poèmes ont été échangés par courriel. Karen est la meneuse, Jhave est l'écho. » — Karen Trask et David Jhave Johston

𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗸 est une artiste multidisciplinaire de Montréal dont le travail touche plusieurs médias : l’installation, la vidéo et la performance. Ses œuvres ont été présentées dans des expositions solos et collectives sur les scènes nationales et internationales, notamment, à la Fondation PHI (Montréal), au 67e International short film festival (Oberhausen, Allemagne), à Oboro (Montréal) à Arte continua (La Havane, Cuba), à La Maison des arts de Laval, ainsi qu’au Komagome Contemporary Art Space (Tokyo, Japon). Elle a aussi participé à des résidences à Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Helsinki, Paris et Tokyo. En 2017 et 2018, elle a été en résidence à l’Université de Moncton (Nouveau-Brunswick) et à l’Université de Mount Allison à Sackville (Nouveau-Brunswick). Née à Fergus (Ontario), Karen Trask a grandi sur une ferme. Elle a étudié les arts visuels à l’Université de Waterloo (Ontario) et a obtenu une maîtrise en arts visuels à l’Université Concordia (Montréal). Elle est codirectrice de l’espace Produit Rien (Montréal).

𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗝𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 est un poète numérique qui s’inscrit dans les domaines émergents de l’IA, de la 3D, du RV et du code. Il est l’auteur-programmeur derrière le projet artistique multimédia d'écriture humaine et IA ReRites (Anteism Books, 2019) et auteur du livre d’histoire-théorie Aesthetic Animism : Digital Poetry's Ontological Implications (MIT Press, 2016), et de nombreuses explorations littéraires multimédias en ligne sur www.glia.ca. Il est employé en tant que chercheur Ai-narrative au UiB Centre for Digital Narrative de 2023 à 2026.

"In the 1980s, Marie-France Brière travelled to Pietrasanta, Italy, a city of medieval origin in Tuscany known as the capital of working artistically with many materials. For centuries, Pietrasanta’s main activity has been devoted to art, namely bronze alloying and marble carving. [...] Brière returned to Montreal with blocks of Carrara marble, intent on pursuing her goal: to reshape the space-time of stone through its strata and interstices. To this day, by chiseling layers of meaning into this irreversibly formed material, she still finds potential for transformation it holds—its simultaneous revelation and disappearance. Marble is an amalgamation of (un)predictable pressure, which, to say the least, is hard to interpret." — Jean-Michel Quirion

𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲-𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗲 has been developing her research into sculpture, reflecting on the various issues involved in integrating it into public spaces. Using a variety of treatments and arrangements, she creates structures that reorganize inside and outside, surface and lining, with a view to increasing the tensions of inert matter and concretizing forms based on the concepts of plasticity and resistance. Marie-France Brière holds a Master's degree in Visual Arts from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), and has received several grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) and the Canada Council for the Arts (CCA), as well as the Prix Louis-Comtois in 1996. A monograph offering an overview of her work was produced and published by Plein Sud Édition in 2022. The artist lives and works in Montreal.

KAREN TRASK and DAVID JHAVE JOHNSTON

"Inside-out Poems is an audio project initiated by Karen Trask with the collaboration of David Jhave Johnston. It began with Karen emailing a poem to Jhave who had suggested acting as a witness to her process. He replied with a poem that echoed and inverted the words, sense and rhythm. This began a daily exchange that was spontaneous and playful. Currently, there are over 200 poems exchanged. Karen is the lead, Jhave is the echo." — Karen Trask and David Jhave Johston

𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗸 is a multidisciplinary artist based in Montreal Specializing in installation, sculpture, video and performance, her work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally, notably the Fondation PHI (Montreal), 67th International Short film Festival (Oberhausen, Germany), Arte Continua (Havana, Cuba), La Maison des arts de Laval, Oboro (Montreal) and Komagome Contemporary Art Space (Tokyo, Japan). She has participated in artist residencies: Helsinki, Paris, Tokyo and was artist-in-residence for 2017 and 2018 at the Université de Moncton (New Brunswick) and Mount Allison University in Sackville (New Brunswick). Born in Fergus (Ontario), she grew up on a farm. She has a BFA from the University of Waterloo (Ontario) and a Masters Degree in Sculpture from Concordia University (Montreal). She is co-director of Produit Rien space (Montreal).

𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗝𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻 is a digital-poet writing in emergent domains: AI, 3D, VR, and code. Author-programmer of the multimedia human and AI writing art-project ReRites (Anteism Books, 2019), the theoretical-history Aesthetic Animism: Digital Poetry's Ontological Implications (MIT Press, 2016), and many online multimedia literary explorations at www.glia.ca. He is currently employed as an Ai-narrative researcher at the UiB Centre for Digital Narrative from 2023 to 2026.
