Une sélection d’albums emblématiques de Montréal sera réalisée par un trio de commissaires invitées: Marilou Lyonnais Archambault, artiste multidisciplinaire et éducatrice à la Fondation PHI; Patti Schmidt, animatrice de radio et productrice créative; et Marie-Douce St-Jacques, artiste multidisciplinaire.

L’événement de lancement aura lieu le jeudi 1er février 2024 et sera animé par celles-ci. Tous les jeudis subséquents, pendant cinq semaines, leurs disques choisis résonneront dans l’installation «untitled 2017 (skip the bruising…)» (2017) de Rirkrit Tiravanija. Le public sera invité à venir écouter ces albums, boire un verre, jouer à des jeux de sociétés, et échanger aux sons de cette histoire musicale montréalaise.

A selection of influential albums from Montréal will be curated by three special guests: Marilou Lyonnais Archambault, multidisciplinary artist and educator at the PHI Foundation, Patti Schmidt, broadcaster and creative producer, and Marie-Douce St-Jacques, multidisciplinary artist.

Launching on Thursday, February 1, 2024, the series will be hosted by all three curators. Every Thursday thereafter, for five weeks, the chosen records will be played in the installation “untitled 2017 (skip the bruising...)” (2017) by Rirkrit Tiravanija. The public will be invited to come and listen to the albums, have a drink, play board games and chat to the sounds of this Montréal musical history.

L’exposition 𝐿𝑒𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑝𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒𝑥𝑒𝑠 porte sur les schèmes intériorisés entourant la place qu’occupent les corps dans les interactions tant sociales qu’intimes. Elle s'ancre dans une recherche sociétale, comportementale et féministe qui nous convoque à une réflexion sur les relations genrées. La cohabitation d’imposantes sculptures de tissus, d’œuvres installatives et de créations sur papier laisse transparaître les malaises véhiculés par les rapports de domination en fonction des identités de genre à travers l'histoire.

The exhibition 𝐿𝑒𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑝𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒𝑥𝑒𝑠 looks at the internalized frameworks surrounding the place of bodies in both social and intimate interactions. Through an examination of deeply encoded experiences and feelings, the exhibition is rooted in societal, behavioral and feminist research and invites us to reflect on gendered relationships. The copresence of imposing fabric sculptures, installations and works on paper reveals the discomfort conveyed by relations of domination based on gender identities in contemporary and past space-time.

Inspiré de la culture populaire et des univers gamer, le travail d’aenl combine à la fois jeu, critique et création dans une proposition qui incite à l’exploration de l’espace numérique et de ses possibilités.

C'est le moment d’offrir à vos cœurs fatigués le feu dont ils ont besoins,
On se retrouve pour danser et jouer les battements des iles de l'océan indien qui court dans nos veines. C'est le cadeau offert par les lutins musiciens Lucas et Lalaina qui tiendront l'espace ainsi que d'autres mutantes et mutants qui ont bien voulue rejoindre le jeu.

C'est un hommage, aux kabaré et famadihana de Madagascar et la Réunion, à ces cérémonies tenues par nos ancêtres, à ces voyages sur les sons de nos ADN, une manière de se rappeler d’où l'on vient mais aussi on l'on va en célébrant l'instant présent, de ces luttes infinies qui nous ont menée dans ce moment plein de vie.

Le temps de voir deux couchers de soleil sans tirer ta chaise, tu pourras danser, aller et venir sur le plancher de danse pour y plonger dans le rythme de l'hiver et te liquéfier dans ta chrysalide.

Present in the musical world for several years, he ventures into multitudes of styles ranging from jazz to rock, funk and soul, and even rap. It was a few years ago that he rediscovered the call of the Indian Ocean and put the rhythms of his genes back into his ears.

The class is for beginners and those wishing to deepen their technical and theoretical knowledge of contact improv. No experience required ♡ No exercise is compulsory, and you may decide not to take part in certain or adapt them to suit your needs and limits of the moment
What do we mean by chosen mixity?
This jam is not open to cis men. Contact improv is a dance form that involves physical proximity and a level of bodily intimacy which can make us feel vulnerable. With this chosen mixity, we aim to create a space where trans, non-binary, non-gender conforming people, and women are more likely to enjoy an increased sense of security while practicing contact improv.

La recherche de la perle rare, c'est ce qui obsède depuis plusieurs années Philippe Noël et La Mano Peluda (Clément Jehan) créateurs et DJ de la soirée mensuelle montréalaise Canicule Tropicale. La perle rare, c'est le disque vinyle oublié qui retournera une piste de danse.

Le champs d'action de ces deux "diggers" (terme utilisé pour qualifier les traqueurs de disques rares), collectionneurs et donc DJ est large : l'Afrique, l'Amérique latine, les Caraïbes, le Moyen-Orient, l'Asie... Est-il besoin de préciser que la zone ciblée est tropicale? Ces disques venus d'ailleurs sont également d'une autre époque, entre 1950 et 1980.

Démarrée en 2010 et installée à la Sala Rossa depuis 2017 (après 2 ans au Divan Orange précédé de 3 ans à l'Inspecteur Épingle), la soirée Canicule Tropicale propose maintenant sur un GROS DANCEFLOOR un menu très éclectique en terme d'origines et de genres musicaux, passant de l'afrobeat à la cumbia, du kompa au forró, de l'ethio-jazz à la salsa, pour n'en nommer que quelques-uns.

Canicule Tropicale s'est également illustrée dans la plupart des grands festivals ou événements québécois (Festival de Jazz (2010, 2011 et 2013), Festival Nuits D'Afrique (2012,2016 et 2017, Festival du bout du monde de Gaspé, Piknic Elektronic, Festival Montréal en lumière (Nuit blanche 2015 et 2016), Pop Montréal, Mundial, RIDM).

If a cookbook club is new to you, the idea is like a traditional book club, but instead of talking about a book we’ve all read, we all make a recipe (or multiple recipes) from a cookbook and share pictures our dishes on the event page and all together at a gathering at the bookshop. The club is hosted by Isabella Geddes and is free to attend.

This season, we've chosen More Is More: Get Loose in the Kitchen. In this new recipe book, New York Time Best Seller Molly Baz is teaching cooks how to level up their cooking, loosen up in front of that ripping hot pan, and seek deliciousness at all costs. 2012/ THROUGH THE HEART marks the 10th anniversary of the great political and social movement that accompanied the 2012 student strike in Québec. Three events are at the centre of the documentary: the protest at the Salon du Plan Nord in Montreal, the riot at the Liberal Party Convention in Victoriaville and the demonstrations in June and July 2012 in Montreal in defiance of emergency laws. ‘2012/In the Heart’ is constructed from a multiplicity of viewpoints in an interweaving of images from amateur and professional sources. The film is narrated by Safia Nolin.

The documentary 2012/ THROUGH THE HEART is part of the 51st edition of the Festival du nouveau cinéma – FNC !

Join us for the curators’ talk and panel discussion for the opening of Domestic Monument, the third installment of the 2023–2024 Out of the Box exhibition series, dedicated to the works of Amancio Williams. The curators of this exhibition, Mauricio Pezo and Sofia von Ellrichshausen of Pezo von Ellrichshausen, will present their research and reflections on the idea of domestic monumentality in Williams’s work at 5:30pm.

After their presentation and to mark the final chapter of the series, they will be joined on stage by the curators of the two previous exhibitions for a panel discussion. In the feature documentary UNARMED VERSES, acclaimed filmmaker Charles Officer creates a thoughtful and vivid portrait of a family and a community facing a difficult transition. The largely low-income residents of a rental housing block in Toronto’s north-east end are threatened with imposed relocation due to the impending demolition of the place they call home. At the centre of this story is 12-year-old Francine Valentine, a curious and compassionate girl whose astute observations and innate ability to express her thoughts belie her young age. Having immigrated to Canada as a four-year-old, Francine lives with her father and other family members but has a distant relationship with her mother, who remained in their home country of Antigua. Francine’s remarkably insightful reflections on life, the self, and the soul are beautifully framed by her love for art of all kinds, from poetry to drawing, dancing, and music. The difficult realities of her existence—poverty, girlhood, family rifts, and community tumult—are no match for this bright and expressive youngster. Francine and her peers are aided through their community’s transition by teachers and mentors who show them the power of art and creativity in navigating adversity. From garage reggae jams to the soft jazz emanating behind languid shots of the neighbourhood and its people, from Francine’s careful reading of Edgar Allan Poe to the recording studio where the neighbourhood’s teenagers learn to lay down their musical tracks, the capacity of art to provide strength and create change is fully realized. As Francine herself says, art is an “escape from reality.” While Francine’s unforgettable voice speaks for an entire community facing change, UNARMED VERSES gives agency to those who are rarely heard in society. Francine’s transformative journey transcends a simple coming-of-age story: it mirrors our universal need to express ourselves, find our voice, and belong. Charles Officer builds a powerful bond of trust with this luminous girl, crafting a poignant urban observational film that explores intertwining themes of economic disparity, home, love, and self-esteem. “It’s a miracle that we exist at all,” is a line from a poem by one of Francine’s mentors, who encouraged her to improve her self-confidence through art. This universal truth transcends the struggles and triumphs of communities across the world that are facing adversity while celebrating their bonds.

For some fifty years, in intriguing and ingenious fictions that reimagined the very form of the short story—from his 1935 debut with A Universal History of Iniquity through his immensely influential collections Ficciones and The Aleph, the enigmatic prose poems of The Maker, up to his final work in the 1980s, Shakespeare’s Memory—Jorge Luis Borges returned again and again to his celebrated themes: dreams, duels, labyrinths, mirrors, infinite libraries, the manipulations of chance, gauchos, knife fighters, tigers, and the elusive nature of identity itself. Playfully experimenting with ostensibly subliterary genres, he took the detective story and turned it into metaphysics; he took fantasy writing and made it, with its questioning and reinventing of everyday reality, central to the craft of fiction; he took the literary essay and put it to use reviewing wholly imaginary books.

Jorges Luis Borges was born in Buenos Aires in 1899 and educated in Europe. One of the most widely acclaimed writers of our time, he published many collections of poems, essays and short stories, before his death in Geneva in June 1986.

In 1961 Borges shared the International Publishers' Prize with Samuel Beckett. The Ingram Merrill Foundation granted him its Annual Literary Award in 1966 for his 'outstanding contribution to literature'. In 1971 Columbia University awarded him the first of many degrees of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa that he was to receive from the English-speaking world. In 1971 he received the fifth biennial Jerusalem Prize and in 1973 was given the Alfonso Reyes Prize, one of Mexico's most prestigious cultural awards. In 1980 he shared the Cervantes Prize (the Spanish world's highest literary accolade) with Gerardo Diego. Borges was Director of the Argentine National Library from 1955 until 1973. In a tribute to Borges, Mario Vargas Llosa wrote: 'His is a world of clear, pure, and at the same time unusual ideas... expressed in words of great directness and restraint. [He] was a superb storyteller. One reads most of Borges' tales with the hypnotic interest usually reserved for reading detective fiction ...'

David Bellemare's new series confronts the viewer with a collection that merges personal narrative with broader cultural critique. Drawing on a diverse range of sources — from personal memories and digital cliparts to the iconography of hockey and the rituals of Catholicism — Bellemare recontextualizes familiar imagery within a framework of sharp contrasts and visual dissonance.

About the artist:

David Bellemare is an MFA candidate at Concordia University in painting and drawing. He received a Canada Council for the arts research and creation grant, the Shirley Reed graduate scholarship, the Tom Hopkins memorial graduate award and was recently in residency at Sagamie. His recent exhibitions include Blastover at Galerie Cache (MTL), Along the Way at TAP Art Space (MTL) and The Patriot at O’Flaherty’s (NYC). He lives and works in Montreal.

Montréal, Québec — TAP Art Space est fier de présenter Petites Peintures qui Vendent, une exposition solo de David Bellemare, qui débutera le jeudi 29 février, de 17h à 20h au 3333 Boul Crémazie E, Porte 201, Montréal, Québec H1Z 2H8. L'exposition sera visible jusqu'au 6 avril.

La nouvelle série de David Bellemare confronte le spectateur à une collection qui fusionne le récit personnel avec une critique culturelle plus large. Puisant dans une gamme diversifiée de sources — des souvenirs personnels et des cliparts numériques à l'iconographie du hockey et aux rituels du catholicisme — Bellemare recontextualise des images familières dans un cadre de contrastes marqués et de dissonance visuelle.

Petites Peintures qui Vendent navigue dans les réflexions de l'artiste sur la paternité, la masculinité et les attentes sociétales enracinées dans le paysage culturel québécois. L'œuvre de Bellemare interroge l'équilibre entre le succès commercial et l'intégrité artistique, employant l'humour et un œil critique pour disséquer les thèmes de l'identité, de la tradition et de la marchandisation de l'art.

À propos de l'artiste :

David Bellemare est candidat à la maîtrise en beaux-arts à l'Université Concordia, en peinture et dessin. Il a reçu une bourse de recherche et de création du Conseil des arts du Canada, la bourse d'études supérieures Shirley Reed, le prix commémoratif pour étudiants diplômés Tom Hopkins et a récemment été en résidence à Sagamie. Ses expositions récentes incluent Blastover à la Galerie Cache (MTL), En Passant à TAP Art Space (MTL) et The Patriot chez O’Flaherty’s (NYC). Il vit et travaille à Montréal.

Posant un regard sensible sur le monde, ils transfigurant picturalement leurs perceptions intimes et leurs imaginaires par la peinture, le collage, l'estampe et le dessin. Leurs créations équivoques et imaginatives ne se dévoilent que partiellement, conservant toujours un élément de mystère. Ensemble, ces derniers tissent des narrations ambiguës marquées par une tension entre l'occulté et le révélé.

Sweet Dreams offers a spellbinding incursion into the intimate worlds of these artists. Taking a sensitive look at everything that surrounds them, they transpose their perceptions and imagination pictorially with virtuosity, though painting, collage, printmaking and drawing. Their equivocal, imaginative creations are only partially revealed, always retaining a large element of mystery. Together, the artists weave an ambiguous narrative marked bby a tension between the hidden and the revealed.

"Ce tableau se tient"

On imagine d’emblée la posture de celui qui s’exprime ainsi devant une œuvre. Les bras croisés, le poid du corps reposant sur une jambe en retrait, la tête légèrement penchée vers l’arrière. Il enligne avec ces quelques mots toutes les dimensions de l’objet - forme, contenu, et message - sur une certitude qui clôt, selon lui, la question.


Or, effectivement, les tableaux de David Gagnon se tiennent; mais en se tenant eux-mêmes, ils ne tiennent, pour ainsi dire, qu’en peu de choses. Ce sont des sortes de porte-à-faux d'une métaphysique avare, ouverte sur un théâtre de la pénombre où se joue une scène intime, presque mystique, évoquant les jeux d’enfants.


Quand parmi les décombres de la scénographie en chantier, nous découvrons un regard qui répond au nôtre, nous sentons bien que ce ne sont pas des yeux complices qui nous observent. Ils semblent nous dire: “quel besoin avons-nous de vous?” ou ”Tout cela ne vous concerne pas!



Et lorsque toutes les certitudes initiales se seront effondrées, il ne restera plus rien du ton présomptif de notre exergue. Ou n’est-ce en réalité que le début?



"This painting holds up!"

It's easy to imagine the demeanour of someone who utters these words in front of a work of art. Arms crossed, body weight resting on a receding leg, head tilted slightly backwards. With these few words, he aligns all the object's dimensions - form, content and message - with a certainty that, in his view, puts the matter to rest.


And indeed, David Gagnon's paintings do hold up, but by holding themselves up, they hold up little else. They are a kind of porte-à-faux, a metaphysics of frugality, openings unto a theatre of penumbra where an intimate, almost mystical scene that evokes childhood games is played out.


When, amidst the rubble of an in-progress scenography, we discover a gaze that returns to our own, we sense that these eyes observing us are not complicit. They seem to say: “What need do we have of you?” “None of this is of your concern!”


In the end, when all the initial certainties have finally melted away, nothing will be left of our epigraph's presumptuous tone. Or is it really just the beginning?
