Title : Mathematics that resonates

Abstract : What do the tones of a cello have to do with those annoying hot spots when you microwave some food? What does noise reduction in a car share in common with designing a fusion reactor? To a mathematician, these are all examples of the fundamental notion of 'resonances': the mathematical concepts of eigenvalues and eigenvectors, which describe how systems respond to periodic forces. Through surprising and perhaps unusual examples, we will see how mathematics is used to find and optimize resonances in fields as diverse as acoustics, engineering, and quantum mechanics. We will also uncover cases where resonance is something to be avoided-whether in the design of buildings, spacecraft, or even cognac glasses. Along the way, we will catch glimpses of the mathematical techniques that shape our understanding of the world, from linear algebra to spectral theory. Whether you are a mathematician or simply curious about the hidden structures behind sound and motion, this talk will reveal some mathematics that truly resonates.

collection of essays, poems, songs, raps, rants, chants, anecdotes and extracts
from his plays, stories, albums and workshops for housing justice. Based on his
decades of ongoing work as an activist/artist/organizer with housing and
tenant’s rights groups across Canada. Also includes photos, posters, articles
and reviews, plus material from his legendary radical community cabarets with
his bands, Rhythm Activism and DaZoque! The headline news-making cabarets, were
organized with the province-wide coalition, FRAPRU (People's Rights Over Urban
Development) and seen by thousands. Examples of how one socially conscious
artist works with words, art, theatre, humour and music with community groups,
and how other creative spirits and activists can join in on the front lines too.

PUBLIC LECTURE
Title : A tour of the mathematics of music and sound

Abstract : Music and sound are part of all cultures and critical to human and animal communication. Yet mathematics is crucial for understanding why instruments (including the voice) sound like they do, what frequencies sound harmonious or dissonant, how strings and objects vibrate or resonate, how our ears and brains analyze sound, and how sound waves propagate in and are changed by an architectural space. Why can't the musical interval called a perfect fifth be "perfect", and how does this affect musical tuning? Why does one hear a "chirp" when one claps in a racquetball court? We will take a tour of such questions and phenomena, explaining how applied mathematics underlies each. The lecture will include some live demos with instruments and sounds, and live sound analysis with the "spectrogram" (time-frequency analysis). No musical training is required to enjoy the lecture, and the mathematics needs only ratios, simple graphs, and trigonometry (although of course there will be pointers to more advanced areas!)

Come on a group bike ride to Montreal's best secret sketchy beach spot. Weather
permitting!

WHERE:

* Meet up at 2515 Rue Delisle, intersection Charlevoix.

* Latecomers are welcome, but you'll have to text someone to find out where we
end up

* The spot is a 20-30 minute bike ride. It's only accessible by bike, or by a
looooong walk from a bus stop. You can't drive there! We have to descend a
small hill and walk along a trail for a few minutes to get to the beach spot.

WHEN:

* Meet at 5pm

* We'll depart at 5:30pm sharp

WHAT (to bring):

It's a sketchy beach, so there are no amenities, no services, no bathrooms.

* Water/beverages/extra water

* Firewood so we can have a fire

* Chair, tarp, towel - something to sit on!

* Snacks to eat and share

* Bike lights

* Bug spray

* Glasses/facemask/face covering - depending on the weather, sometimes it can
be a bit buggy on ride there/back

* Clothes - you can swim if you want, but it's also good to wear long pants for
small amount of bushwhacking

* I'll bring a big bluetooth speaker for music

WHY:

This is meant to be a chill activity for people to meet and greet before the
chaos of Saturday/Sunday. This beach is an awesome and special part of Montreal
- the best place to watch the sunset and the easiest way to get out of the city
without a car. Borrow some bikes for your out of town friends and bring them
along! We'll get there in time to enjoy the sunset.

Taking Everything: Revolutionary Anarchism in Greece, Eastern Europe, and Latin
America (CÉDA, room 119, English)

This discussion is interested in anarchism as a revolutionary tendency. We want
the expropriation of property and the liberation of territory on a massive scale
through widespread social uprising and resonating anarchist participation. For a
few years in Ukraine in the 1910s, up to seven million people lived inside of
territory liberated by anarchist forces. In recent years, anarchists have built
barricades in Chile and Greece, defending neighbourhoods, creating liberated
spaces for housing, and looting goods. They've played essential roles in not
just participating in – something we can do easily here in Montreal – but
setting off uprisings – something that requires much more influence.

Broad participation and engagement with anarchism is something we all say we
want and it is worth understanding at a deeper level. It is not enough to see
other groups' most appealing successes and want to replicate them, we need to
understand the kinds of smaller projects, structures, and analysis in the years
leading up to these events that have enabled anarchists to become more than an
alienated milieu of a few dozen or hundred people. Particular interest will be
given to lesser known groups, initiatives, and texts, which are well-documented
and have proven to be reliable successes that could be replicated in Montreal.
If we can implement the lessons from other places, we can bring ourselves closer
to a revolution.

Artificial Intelligence through a Radical Lens (CÉDA, room 123, English)

A capitalist vision of so-called artificial intelligence (AI) is ubiquitous in
mainstream discourse and has begun to penetrate many aspects of our lives. The
mainstream discourse is divided into techno-enthusiasts happy with the idea of
deploying AI into every corner of our lives and AI doomers who believe these
developments portend human extinction and AI-driven apocalypse. Both views
overlook the reality that AI is already widely used as a weapon of war by the
usual suspects, and as a tool of exploitation, surveillance and control by the
capitalist class. Its widespread deployment is also measurably harming the
planet, by requiring a growing quantity of energy and material resources. As
anticapitalist activists, how can we respond to the widespread adoption of
artificial intelligence in the world around us? Should we ignore it, oppose it,
or reappropriate it as a tool for radical change? This workshop builds upon its
first iteration in 2024 and is intended to continue the discussion.

This discussion will be facilitated by members of Science for the People, a
radical community organization that seeks to develop a theory and practice of
science by and for the people, in opposition to science directed by corporate
greed and imperialism.

Towards an Anarchist Analysis of Cancer (CÉDA, room 119, English)

This workshop will start with a short presentation about the facilitator's
attempt at understanding her experience with breast cancer from an anarcho
feminist perspective. Themes include the defunding of the healthcare system in
Canada, the privatization of healthcare in Quebec, gender trouble in cancerland,
the climate crisis and cancer treatment, and the cancer foundation industrial
complex. After the presentation, there will be a discussion about the politics
of cancer and cancer treatment. Please keep in mind that the facilitator is not
a trained trauma therapist, nor grief worker. While there are lots of emotional
aspects of the cancer diagnosis and treatment experience, we will be trying to
keep our discussion focused on analyzing our experiences collectively and
finding political meaning together.

Veronica is a white, queer woman who was diagnosed with stage 2, hormone
positive, HER2 negative invasive ductal carcinoma at the age of 35. She is a
long time anarchist organizer who has been most active in the prisoner justice
movement in Montreal.

Anti-Authoritarian Horizons (CÉDA, room 123, French)

No one likes to be told what to do! Nevertheless, we sometimes find the traces
of authority in individual behaviors and in groups structures on the radical
left... CLAC (Convergence des luttes anticapitalistes) proposes a workshop to
theorize, discuss and test what a horizontal and anti-authoritarian organization
might look like. You're invited to reflect with us on how to reduce power
dynamics in our milieu towards anti-authoritarian horizons.

CLAC spreads anti-capitalist, anti-oppressive, anti-authoritarian and decolonial
ideas and practices while functioning according to non-hierarchical principles.
It's a space for collective organizing to oppose the violence of the State and
capital.

Militant or Military? The Organization of Violence (CÉDA, room 125, French)

How do we adopt a nuanced attitude toward the necessity of armed self-defense in
the context of extremely violent conflicts? When the level of violence of a
struggle rises, how do we ensure that autonomy and mutual aid continue to orient
our activity rather than the priorities of armed groups that often pass
themselves off as "the resistance"? In a moment when the militarized struggles
led by specific armed groups are glorified, it is more important than ever to
mark the difference between militant and military action. In other words, the
difference between tactics and forms of escalation arising from the
self-organization of oppressed classes and those imposed by groups specialized
in organized violence. This workshop takes inspiration from anarchist
perspectives on the Syrian Revolution and Italian autonomy in the 60s and 70s to
propose some starting points for preventing the domination of armed groups over
struggles that become violent.

"All Will Be Equalized!": Georgia's Freedom-Seekers of the Swamps, Backwoods,
and Sea Islands 1526-1890 (CÉDA, room 119, English)

Historian-activist Andrew Zonneveld will present a new book documenting a
300-year period of dynamic and multi-racial resistance to slavery and
colonialism in the southeastern U.S. From rebellious Afro-Indigenous communities
on Georgia's Sea Islands, to inter-racial networks of anti-Confederate
resistance during the U.S. Civil War, these are the stories of oppressed peoples
of African, Indigenous, and European descent who lived and fought together for
their collective liberation.

Andrew Zonneveld is a Georgia-based historian, master naturalist, an anarchist
organizer. His essays on social movement history have been published in a number
of books and periodicals, including ROAR Magazine, Mergoat Magazine, and Orobo
Journal.

Reading of The Mega-Adventures of Koko Sisi et Kiki Pupu by the Authors (CÉDA,

This interactive reading and workshop will bring The Mega Adventures of Koko
Sisi and Kiki Pupu: The Mystery of the Stolen Bananas to life with authors Papi
and El Choco. The session will feature a bilingual reading in French and
English, ensuring that kids of all backgrounds can fully enjoy the adventure.
Following the reading, there will be a Q&A session where children and parents
can ask questions about the book, the creative process, and how anyone can make
their own children’s book. The goal is to promote literacy, storytelling, and
DIY publishing in an accessible and inspiring way. The authors will also be
available to sign books after the session, making this a fun and memorable
experience for attendees.

Papi is an anarchist filmmaker from Borike and his kid el choco is a boy who
loves to read and play. They co-authored the book "The Mega Adventures of Koko
Sisi and Kiki Pupu".

campaigns with their neighbourhood groups.

We will look at the history of the BDS movement, the importance of BDS as a
strategy, local BDS targets and tactics.

This workshop aims to provide organisers with the practical tools they need to
lay the groundwork, launch, organise and defend BDS campaigns in their
neighbourhoods.

The workshop will take place in English, with French titles in slide
presentation, and whisper translation. Childcare and snacks provided.

* Emmanuel Dror has been involved in the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions
(BDS) campaign, first in Quebec and then in France. He has championed this issue
within his union, the Union syndicale Solidaires, in France, and participates in
training sessions, conferences, and articles written within this framework.

Cree nation and Palestine.

The south side, near the city’s administrative district, bears the names of 7 pioneering women who made their mark in different fields.Place des Montréalaises links downtown and Vieux-Montréal. This large gateway to city hall combines superior quality with outstanding design and architecture.Dedicated to Montrealers, the public space covers an area of more than 2 hectares. What’s more, the Place des Montréalaises adds to the downtown greenery with 100 newly planted trees. The site also provides a vista over the city, highlighting the area’s urban landscapes and built heritage. This project responds to the highway below it by creating a more human-centred place that encourages active transport and is linked to the metro station.

Regretfully, the Mainline Theatre is not wheelchair-accessible. There is a single step through a glass door into the stairwell, and then there are 12 steps from there up to the theatre floor. There are 3 single-stall gender-neutral bathrooms on the premises, but none accomodate wheelchair-users.

A NOTE ABOUT WHY THIS IS THE LASTONE: For 17 years, the Mainline Theatre has been our home. Its beating heart has been a pulse of encouragement, and its soul and staff have been our body, its booze and its blood. Unfortunately, the Mainline Theatre is closing at the endof June, so this will be our LastSlowdance here. We are sad and heartbroken about it all, and while its true that other venues could accomodate an event of this type, this is our last Montreal slowdancefor now and maybe ever. I love making odd events but convincing venues to host them is exhausting. People who know the event love it but people who hear about it for thefirst time are deeply skeptical. So we're not saying goodbye forever just for the foreseeable. And wethank you SO MUCH for your attendance, love, support and bravery for the last 17 years! Come have onemore dance under the disco ball lights.

A NOTE ABOUT MASKS: You should know that THIS EVENT WILLNOT REQUIRE MASKS. That said, individuals may choose to wear them and they should be treated with love and respect. If you are feeling sick, we urge you to stay home. Whatever happens, we hope you will act with grace and compassion with one another and make decisions with the health of everyone in mind.

A NOTE ABOUT LIGHT SENSITIVITY: During the night, there will bea mirrorball spinning in the middle of the room with a pinspot on it. Bright lights will be reflectedoff of it for the duration of theevent. Additionally, our Designated Dancers wear bright LED lights on their chests so they are easy to identify. Those sensitive to bright or flashing lights might consider sunglasses and a hat with a brim. If you dip in and decide it's too much, we can refund your admission.

A NOTE ABOUT THE DANCE CARDS: The dancecards are these little handmade booklets that contain a setlist of every song that will be played that evening. The ideais that during the course of the evening, you can "book" certain songs with certain people, and vice versa. So when your charming host announces a particular song, you can look on your dancecard and see who it is you're going to dance with next. There is a little space after every song where people can write their names. How filled your dancecard gets depends on you, of course. Look for the Dancecard-Signing Station located somewhere on the premises where small pencils are available. Use of the dancecards, is, of course, optional, and completely up to you. Proceed at your comfort level.

A NOTE ABOUTTHE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT: Essentially, you have the right to ask anyone you want to dance. But whoeverit is you asked has the right to refuse your request, and not have to give any reason why. But wonderfully, you have this right as well. This is done because slowdancingwith someone is rather an intimate sort of enterprise, and you should have the right to back out anytime you wish. Queer Slowdance is about consensual respect and enjoyment.

A NOTE ABOUT THE DESIGNATED DANCERS: On any particular night there will be a handful of our Designated Dancers available to dance with you for the first half ofthe evening - so arrive early! They will be wearing glowing lights over their hearts, and these Designated Dancers are warm, charming, and safe people to ask to dance. Of course, the same Rules of Engagement apply, and they, as free agents, can decide for themselves who they want to dance with, and for how long, but in all likelihood, they would be very open to dancing with you. Please think of them as awarm taxi light in the middle of a blizzard.

A NOTE ABOUT COMMON SCENTS: Because at this event folks will be in very close proximity to each other, pretty much hugging, we would like attendees to bemindful of what they smell like. Bathing is a great idea, but ditchthe fragrances! Thank you!

ANOTE ABOUT POLITELY DECLINING: Soat this event, there is a high likelihood that you may be asked to dance by someone of the same, opposite, or indeterminate gender. We understand that people have preferences, irrespective of gender, regarding who they want to dance with. We urge you to be very polite ifsomeone has asked you to dance but you do not want to dance with them. A simple "No thank you," will suffice. You do not have to explain why.

A NOTE ABOUT INTERPERSONAL SAFETY: Sometimes it happens that there is someone in the crowdwho will make you feel unsafe or uncomfortable when dancing. This does not have to be an obvious thing. It could just be a weird feeling. You are more than within your rights to stop the dance right there, and not have to explain. You are more than within your rights to say to them, "Hey! Don't fucking do that!" and then discuss your boundaries during the dance itself. We urge and encourage discussion ofboundaries. If something more serious occurs, do please let the organizer know. The organizer is the person in the cat ears and stunning dress at the DJ Laptop. They areboth your mom & dad & kooky aunt tonight and a safe person to come to if something happens, and we will try to resolve it with everyone's safety in mind. The organizer reserves the right to ask anyone toleave for any reason which they do not have to divulge to anyone.
