En croisant les pratiques d’artistes, de chercheur·euse·s et de développeur·euse·s, ce champ transforme données, algorithmes et phénomènes du vivant en expériences sensibles et immersives.Bien au-delà d’une tendance esthétique, les arts-science constituent aujourd’hui un véritable moteur d’exploration de notre rapport au monde, au vivant et à la technologie. Fort de ses recherches en arts-science et en informatique menées au cours de la dernière année, le département d’innovation de la SAT est idéalement positionné pour vous initier à ce terrain d’expérimentation fertile, plus pertinent que jamais.Ce 5 à SAT est une occasion privilégiée de s’inspirer, d’échanger et de découvrir des projets, à travers les résultats de nos recherches et des cas d’usage concrets présentés par des artistes collaborateur·rice·s.

Abstract
This lecture introduces concepts developed in my upcoming book, Body Music: Phenomenologies of Sonic Gesture to be published in 2026 by Goldsmiths Press and distributed by MIT Press and Penguin/Random House. Body Music is a musician's account of the relationship between corporeal movement and musical sound. I am interested the visceral engagement of the body in musical performance, and how technological mediation can foster, or break, forms of audience empathy. The book examines the conscious and subconscious strategies behind musical expression, and ways in which sound and gesture become the medium of intersubjectivity with the spectator. It looks at the design of technologies that break out of the binary brittleness of the digital to capture subtleties of human movement to create expressive digital musical instrument systems. Drawing from the overlapping fields of phenomenological philosophy, cognitive neuroscience, and post-humanist anthropology, the book unwraps the performer as materially and digitally entangled with the sonic. It connects these insights with fields of cognitive science and embodied human-computer interaction (HCI) to offer a performer-centric approach to developing new sonic technologies, including with biomedical technologies of electromyogram (EMG) muscle sensing. Using signals of the body with sound signals through processes of interactive machine learning provides a possible humanistic response to the challenges posed by artificial intelligence.
Biography
Atau Tanaka conducts research in embodied musical interaction. By using muscle sensing in performance, the human body becomes a musical instrument. He studied electronic music with Ivan Tcherepnin at Harvard University. There he met John Cage during his Norton Lectures. Tanaka went on to carry out his doctorate with John Chowning and Max Mathews at CCRMA Stanford. Atau has carried out research at IRCAM Centre Pompidou, Apple France, and Sony Computer Science Laboratory (CSL) Paris in areas of interactive music, immersive media, network performance, and human-data interaction. His work, solo and in groups like Sensorband and in collaboration with Lillevan, Cicanoise, and Dane Law has been presented at Ars Electronica, ZKM, WOMAD, Sónar. In Montreal, he has performed at MUTEK, the Société des Arts Technologiques (SAT), FCMM, la Fondation Daniel Langlois, and has been on the board of the InterSociety of Electronic Art (ISEA). His performances in the Japanese avant-garde scene has been captured in the electronic music documentary, Modulations by Iara Lee. A collection of Japanese sound art curated by Tanaka has been released by the SFMOMA. His work in thinking of the body as musical instrument has been exhibited at the Musikinstrumenten-Museum Berlin. His research has been supported by the European Research Council, UK and French research councils. He was artistic co-director of STEIM Amsterdam and has held visiting positions at the Bristol Interaction Group, TU Berlin and MSH Paris Nord. He is co-director of the Centre for Sound, Technology & Culture at Goldsmiths University of London.

Deux mardis par mois, le Grand salon du pavillon de l’esplanade Tranquille accueille des soirées de causerie portant sur l’art des mots, inspirées par l’intellectuel, rêveur et rebelle libraire Henri Tranquille.
𝙇𝙚𝙨 𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙨 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙚 sont menés par Julie Laferrière, animatrice, journaliste et médiatrice culturelle, qui a eu la chance de connaître ce personnage marquant qu’était M. Tranquille. Sous différentes thématiques, ces rencontres donnent la parole à des invité·e·s inspirant·e·s qui œuvrent dans l’univers de la littérature et de l’écriture, tout en laissant la place aux échanges avec le public.
Au programme, une discussion sur le thème 𝗟𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝘁 𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲́𝗺𝗮 réunira Stéphane Lafleur (scénariste et réalisateur) et Catherine Léger (scénariste et dramaturge). Une rencontre inspirante qui explorera le pouvoir des mots à l’écran, le passage de l’écriture à l’image, ainsi que la manière dont les récits façonnent l’émotion, le rythme et l’imaginaire cinématographique !

Le « problème de la galerie d’art » est un problème mathématique bien connu, fondé sur une question simple : combien d’agent·es de sécurité ou de caméras sont nécessaires pour surveiller l’ensemble d’un espace d’exposition? Ce problème, appliqué à des configurations spatiales et des plans de salles variés, met les étudiant·es en mathématiques au défi d’assurer une surveillance complète d’un espace tout en mobilisant un minimum de ressources humaines ou technologiques. Pourtant, les grands musées et galeries ne s’en servent pas, bien qu’il reflète leurs opérations courantes. Il demeure tout de même un cadre dominant pour penser les modalités de présentation des œuvres.
Cette exposition s’approprie le problème de la galerie d’art pour interroger la manière dont les objets et les corps sont mis en jeu dans les galeries et les musées. Le « problème » n’est pas univoque, contrairement à ce que suggère l’approche mathématique. La présentation de l’art excède largement la sécurisation des objets : elle engage aussi des questions de récit, de représentation, d’hégémonie et d’accès au savoir.
Le problème de la galerie d’art met en lumière un ensemble de présupposés implicites à l’œuvre dans les musées et autres lieux d’exposition, notamment en ce qui concerne les normes de surveillance, de travail, de visualité, de droit et de propriété. Alors qu’un travail humain considérable et diverses technologies sont mobilisés pour la préservation et la présentation des objets, il convient de se demander : les normes d’exposition et de présentation servent-elles autant les publics que les institutions? Quelles sont les alternatives à la réification, à la permanence, à la propriété et à la surveillance? Quelles sont les autres manières de vivre avec les objets?

The “art gallery problem” is a well-known math problem with a simple premise: what is the minimum number of guards or surveillance cameras necessary to observe an entire gallery? Across different layouts and floorplans, the art gallery problem challenges math students to achieve full surveillance of a space using the minimum labour or technology. The problem is not put to use by major museums and galleries, despite replicating their standard practices for monitoring facilities. Even so, it remains a dominant understanding of art’s presentation.
This exhibition appropriates the art gallery problem as a framework to consider how objects and bodies are put to work in galleries and museums. The “problem” is in fact not singular: there is far more to the presentation of art than the securitization of objects; there are problems of narrative, representation, hegemony, and access to knowledge.
The art gallery problem highlights a set of underlying assumptions that animate museums and galleries, including surveillance, labour, visuality, law, and ownership. As significant human labour and technologies are mobilized for the preservation and display of objects, it bears asking: Do norms of exhibition and display serve audiences and galleries alike? What are the alternatives to reification, permanence, ownership, and surveillance? What are other ways for living with objects?
