Montreal Cultural Calendar

I'll be hosting a year end zine-making session again this year! I have a template people are welcome to use, but there are many templates and it can be really nice to design your own. Generally it involves:
 
1) looking through your calendar and photos and writing down what happened this year, week by week (or month by month if you want to do it faster)
2) Answering some questions (writing or drawing or point form or whatever) about the year. Like: who did I spend time with? Who showed up for me? Who did I show up for? What felt good? What was hard? What's a song that meant something to me? Etc.
3) Thinking a bit about the coming year and answering questions about that too in your zine

It's more paralell play than guided workshop.

Optiional:
- Feel free to bring pens or markers or art supplies
- Feel free to wear something comfortable
- Feel free to bring snacks to share, ideally vegan so I can try it too! Snack ideas: fruit. berries, veg, nuts, hummus, muhmmara, pita, samosas, most baguettes, many crackers, most very dark chocolate, oreos, sweet chili heat, spicy dill, katjas, so much more

i’m inviting you to a community reading of In C, the iconic early work of Terry Riley. open to all players of pitched instruments (voices too — why not), In C is a series of short melodic fragments played to a common pulse, but with a flexible number of repeats. it’s a wonderful exploration of how small, simple contributions from a number of equal participants can create a beautiful, complex experience. perhaps it’s a nice way to start the new year.

THE WEIGHT: A rural family’s cycle of love, loss, and renewal, set against the beauty and adversity of mid-century America

Edie comes into the world calmly as the adults around her rage. Her father is a cruel man who beats her mother regularly and much of Edie’s young life is spent trying to escape this tyrant. “Why doesn’t she ever cry?...Gives me the creeps.” Of course, being a child means she lives a child’s life—she still has laughter-filled sleepovers and outdoor adventures with the local rat pack of kids still too young to work. But Edie’s heart grows callous as her father becomes drunker and angrier.

Melissa Mendes’ pastoral cartooning captures the openness of rural America—soft breezes, tall grass, whirring grasshoppers, rainstorms, skinned knees. But all the while, the cruelty, the disappointment of man lurks behind the barn and in the trailer. Life can be stubbed out as easily as a cigarette tossed in the dirt. One moment all focus, next, gone without a thought. Will Edie find herself repeating a cycle or will she be free like she felt as a child?

MELISSA MENDES grew up in rural Western Massachusetts, where she currently lives and works. She started making comics in 2002 at Hampshire College and got her MFA from the Center for Cartoon Studies in 2010. Melissa was the recipient of the 2010 Xeric comics self-publishing grant for her book Freddy Stories. In 2014 she began creating and self-publishing the Ignatz-nominated comic The Weight, now a graphic novel, inspired by her late grandfather's life.

Palette invasive est une installation immersive et une recherche continue basée sur un seul matériau qui décline les couleurs à travers des pigments et des colorants extraits de différentes parties du nerprun commun, un arbuste exotique envahissant. Ce travail examine la mémoire matérielle, l'identité et les diasporas. Il ouvre une nouvelle perspective sur l'économie des déchets dans la ville et encourage le public à ralentir et à imaginer les couleurs potentielles des déchets qui nous entourent, non seulement en tant que produits, mais aussi en tant qu'entités vivantes

�Invasive Palette is an immersive installation and an ongoing mono material-based research that investigates the colours through pigments and dyes extracted from different parts of common buckthorn—an invasive exotic shrub. This work examines material memory, identity, and immigrant diasporas and opens up a new perspective of waste economies in the city and encourages the public to slow down and imagine the potential colours of our surrounding waste—not just as a product, but as living entities.

What is an anti-capitalist game club? Think of it like a writer's group but for games. Come work on your games in a low pressure environment surrounded by people who want to do the same!

To mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of Mouvement Perpétuel, Vidéographe and Dazibao offered the company a carte blanche to assemble a program reflecting its core mission. Marlene Millar and Philip Szporer present 𝐌𝐨𝐮𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐞́𝐭𝐮𝐞𝐥 : 𝟐𝟓 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, a program that brings some of their works into dialogue with those of several of their close collaborators.

Clochette, émeraude, étampe, timbre est une exposition collective réunissant les œuvres de Émilie Allard, Ioana Dragomir, Christy Kunitzky, Laurel Rennie et Kuh Del Rosario. Inspirée de Non-Things du philosophe Byung-Chul Han et du roman The Memory Police de Yōko Ogawa, l’exposition interroge la manière dont les objets et les expériences sont progressivement déplacés par l’information, et les effets de ce glissement sur notre identité et notre rapport au monde matériel.
À mesure que l’information et la communication prennent le dessus, les objets perdent de leur importance et de leur sens. Comme le suggère Byung-Chul Han, le monde devient de plus en plus immatériel, presque fantomatique. Dans The Memory Police, les objets « disparaissent » lorsque les souvenirs qui leur sont liés s’effacent, menaçant ainsi l’existence même des individus. L’exposition s’inspire de cette idée d’une pièce secrète où sont conservés des objets oubliés, comme tentative de préserver la mémoire et la personne.
Déployée dans les différentes salles du Livart, l’exposition propose des installations intimistes intégrant des objets trouvés ou transformés, offrant un lieu de repos à des objets délaissés ou déplacés. Les œuvres abordent notre relation fragile aux objets, l’accumulation massive générée par l’industrialisation et le capitalisme, et la perte de valeur qui en découle. L’exposition pose ainsi la question : que conservons-nous, que perdons-nous, et qui en décide ?
Chaque artiste explore ces enjeux à sa manière : Émilie Allard transforme des carottes de minerai familiales en instrument sonore, réfléchissant à l’extraction des ressources et des mémoires; Ioana Dragomir aborde la notion de transience et de proximité à travers une installation textile et graphique; Christy Kunitzky revalorise des objets oubliés liés à l’histoire familiale; Laurel Rennie crée des pendules divinatoires à partir de matériaux naturels; et Kuh Del Rosario questionne le soin apporté aux objets et l’impulsion coloniale de l’archive. Ensemble, les œuvres forment un espace fragmenté d’objets « disparus », réinvestis d’une nouvelle valeur par l’art et la réflexion.

Marc-Olivier Hamelin est un artiste visuel et auteur originaire de Rouyn-Noranda. Il détient un baccalauréat en beaux-arts de l’Université Concordia (2015) et une maitrise en muséologie et pratiques des arts de l’Université du Québec en Outaouais (2019) où il s’est intéressé aux voix multiples en contexte de création.

Son travail a pour point de départ le dialogue et soulève des enjeux relatifs au récit de soi et à la production du discours. Ses projets — où il lie sa voix à celles d’artistes, d’auteur·ices et de pair·es — se matérialisent en installations, en performances, en photographies et en textes.

Ses recherches artistiques actuelles (2022 —) portent sur l’héritage qu’a laissé la crise du sida de la fin du XXe siècle sur sa vie personnelle et artistique et sur les communautés LGBTQ+. Il cherche à déjouer — à travers l’histoire et les répercussions de la crise du sida sur les conditions queer — la vision de ce qui est dit, remémoré et transformé dans un geste contradictoire d’amour et de violence.

Dexter Barker-Glenn (né en 1999, Toronto, Canada) est un artiste multidisciplinaire établi sur les territoires non cédés de Tiohtià:ke (Montréal) et de Tkaronto (Toronto). S’inspirant de la nature et des processus biotiques, il s’intéresse au cycle de vie des matériaux, des images et des symboles. Vesper (Kayla) Guthrie (il/iel) est né·e à Calgary en 1986 et œuvre dans les domaines du son, de la performance, de l'écriture et de l'installation. Marc-Olivier Hamelin is a visual artist and writer from Rouyn-Noranda. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia University (2015) and a Master’s degree in Museology and Artistic Practices from the Université du Québec en Outaouais (2019), where he focused on multiple voices in creative contexts.

His work begins with dialogue and raises issues related to self-narration and the production of discourse. His projects — in which he weaves his voice with those of artists, writers, and peers — take shape as installations, performances, photographs, and texts.

His current artistic research (2022—) focuses on the legacy left by the late 20th-century AIDS crisis on his personal and artistic life, as well as on LGBTQ+ communities. Through exploring the history and repercussions of the AIDS crisis on queer conditions, he seeks to disrupt the vision of what is spoken, remembered, and transformed, in a contradictory gesture of love and violence.

Dexter Barker-Glenn (b. 1999, Toronto, Canada) is a multidisciplinary artist based in the unceded territory of Tiohtià:ke (Montreal) and Tkaronto (Toronto). Afin de sonder les pratiques artistiques contemporaines qui vont au-del du visible, PHI a invit chimie imaginer et animer une srie dateliers olfactifs en rsonance avec les uvres de nos trois expositions dautomne-hiver 2025-2026: Josfa Ntjam, Manuel Mathieu et Keiken.

Dans le cadre de chaque atelier, les participantes sont invites apporter un ou deux objets parfums partager avec le groupe parfums, huiles, encens, pices, ths ou tout autre lment porteur dodeur ou dhistoire.

A lecture by Dr. Jared Wesley (University of Alberta)
Join MISC at 4:00 pm on Monday, January 19th at the Faculty Club (3450 McTavish Street) for Dr. Jared Wesley's lecture on Populism, Sovereignty, and Democracy in Alberta.
From a conventional perspective, Alberta politics today seems like a more extreme version of itself. In this view, the UCP government is one of the most conservative in the province's history and a century's worth of western alienation has come to a crescendo with the rise of separatism. A closer look reveals something different about Alberta's new right, however: they are not conservative, and their goals have less to do with sovereignty than "making Alberta great again." The Common Ground team at the University of Alberta has surveyed over 10,000 Albertans and convened over 100 focus groups over the past six years. Our findings reveal a decided disconnect between public opinion and political culture in the province, exposing daylight between who Albertans are and who they see themselves to be as a community. In this talk, Dr. Jared Wesley outlines how this gap contributes to the democratic backsliding and separatist movements in the province, and what Albertans must do to pull the province back from the brink.
The lecture will be followed by a Q&A and reception. This event is free and open to public; registration is required via Eventbrite.
Jared Wesley is Associate Dean (Graduate Studies), Co-Director of the Peter Lougheed School of Politics and Democracy, a professor of political science, and member of the Black Faculty Collective at the University of Alberta. He leads the Common Ground research team, which is examining the intersection of public opinion, political culture, and public policy in Western Canada. He has co-authored three best-selling books in Canadian politics and public administration: Inside Canadian Politics, The Public Servant's Guide to Politics in Canada, and No I in Team: Party Loyalty in Canadian Politics.

Décrire une œuvre, pour Marie Samuel Levasseur, n’est jamais un geste neutre ou technique : c’est une manière d’être en relation, de saisir la parole soit pour accueillir, soit pour exclure. Chaque description est une voix. Cette exposition propose de circuler à travers les voix qui créent des voies entre le langage et ce qui fait image.
Vernissage en deux temps : dans l’objectif d’assurer un accès sécuritaire à toustes, la première heure d’ouverture de ce vernissage, soit de 17h00 à 18h00, le port du masque sera obligatoire. Des masques de grade médical seront fournis si vous n’avez pas le vôtre. Dès 18h00, le port du masque sera suggéré. Join us on Thursday, January 22nd, 2026, for the opening of “The Paths Between Word and Image”, an exhibition by artist Marie Samuel Levasseur.
For Marie Samuel Levasseur, describing a work of art is never a neutral or technical act: it’s a way of relating to others, of using words either to welcome or exclude. Every description is a voice. This exhibition invites visitors to move through the voices that create pathways between language and imagery.
Two parts opening: in order to ensure safe access for everyone, face masks will be mandatory during the first hour of the exhibition opening, from 5:00 to 6:00. Starting 6:00 pm onwards, masks will be recommended. However, if you have flu or cold like symptoms, please consider wearing a mask for the well-being of everyone. Thank you for your cooperation.

BAPTISTE EYBERT
Baptiste Eybert est un artiste plasticien pluridisciplinaire basé à Montpellier. Né et élevé à Paris, il est diplômé du DNSEP de l’École des beaux-arts de Montpellier (2020). Avant de se consacrer pleinement aux arts visuels, il évolue plusieurs années dans le milieu de la mode en tant que couturier, directeur artistique et styliste ; une expérience qui marque durablement son approche de la matière textile.
Les Résidences Transatlantiques 2025-2026 sont rendues possibles grâce au soutien du Consulat général de France à Québec, de Culture Pro – Ministère de la Culture (France), ainsi que des partenaires du MO.CO, de Quartier Éphémère et de Matapédia Jonction Pôle.


DAGMARA GENDA
Dagmara Genda est artiste et écrivaine indépendante. Elle a immigré au Canada depuis la Pologne et vit à Berlin depuis 2017. Partant du dessin, son travail s'étend à la sculpture, à l'installation et à l'art public. À la Fonderie Darling, Genda continue à « décoller » les dessins de leur surface et à les contraindre à s'adapter à l'espace physique. Avec de nouvelles sculptures métalliques et des œuvres sur papier, elle travaille avec et contre la gravité pour transposer la logique de la page dans un espace tridimensionnel.


YAEL FRANK
Le travail interdisciplinaire axé sur la recherche de Yael Frank examine la fragilité inhérente à toute action par le biais de la sculpture, de la vidéo, de l'architecture et de la création d'images. Pendant la résidence, Frank poursuit le développement de « Sniff », un film parodique sur la nature qui juxtapose l'absurdité convoquée par des marionnettes et le sérieux écologique. Ce projet multidisciplinaire explore les thèmes du mutisme, de l'effondrement du langage et de la crise de l'agentivité par le biais d'une vidéo sculpturale.

BAPTISTE EYBERT
Baptiste Eybert is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Montpellier. Born and raised in Paris, he graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier with a DNSEP degree in 2020. Before devoting himself fully to the visual arts, he spent several years working in the fashion industry as a couturier, artistic director, and stylist, an experience that had a lasting impact on his approach to textiles.
The 2025-2026 Transatlantic Residencies are made possible thanks to the support of the Consulate General of France in Quebec City, Culture Pro – Ministry of Culture (France), as well as partners MO.CO, Quartier Éphémère and Matapédia Jonction Pôle.


DAGMARA GENDA
Dagmara Genda is an independent artist and writer. She immigrated to Canada from Poland and has been living in Berlin since 2017. Starting with drawing, her work extends to sculpture, installation, and public art. At Fonderie Darling, Genda continues to “peel” drawings from their surface and force them to adapt to physical space. With new metal sculptures and works on paper, she works with and against gravity to transpose the logic of the page into three-dimensional space.


YAEL FRANK
Yael Frank's interdisciplinary research-based work examines the fragility inherent in all action through sculpture, video, architecture, and image creation. During the residency, Frank continues to develop "Sniff", a parodic film about nature that juxtaposes the absurdity evoked by puppets with ecological seriousness. This multidisciplinary project explores themes of muteness, the collapse of language, and the crisis of agency through sculptural video.
