UNARMED VERSES

In the feature documentary UNARMED VERSES, acclaimed filmmaker Charles Officer creates a thoughtful and vivid portrait of a family and a community facing a difficult transition. The largely low-income residents of a rental housing block in Toronto’s north-east end are threatened with imposed relocation due to the impending demolition of the place they call home. At the centre of this story is 12-year-old Francine Valentine, a curious and compassionate girl whose astute observations and innate ability to express her thoughts belie her young age. Having immigrated to Canada as a four-year-old, Francine lives with her father and other family members but has a distant relationship with her mother, who remained in their home country of Antigua. Francine’s remarkably insightful reflections on life, the self, and the soul are beautifully framed by her love for art of all kinds, from poetry to drawing, dancing, and music. The difficult realities of her existence—poverty, girlhood, family rifts, and community tumult—are no match for this bright and expressive youngster. Francine and her peers are aided through their community’s transition by teachers and mentors who show them the power of art and creativity in navigating adversity. From garage reggae jams to the soft jazz emanating behind languid shots of the neighbourhood and its people, from Francine’s careful reading of Edgar Allan Poe to the recording studio where the neighbourhood’s teenagers learn to lay down their musical tracks, the capacity of art to provide strength and create change is fully realized. As Francine herself says, art is an “escape from reality.” While Francine’s unforgettable voice speaks for an entire community facing change, UNARMED VERSES gives agency to those who are rarely heard in society. Francine’s transformative journey transcends a simple coming-of-age story: it mirrors our universal need to express ourselves, find our voice, and belong. Charles Officer builds a powerful bond of trust with this luminous girl, crafting a poignant urban observational film that explores intertwining themes of economic disparity, home, love, and self-esteem. “It’s a miracle that we exist at all,” is a line from a poem by one of Francine’s mentors, who encouraged her to improve her self-confidence through art. This universal truth transcends the struggles and triumphs of communities across the world that are facing adversity while celebrating their bonds.

The Latinx Book Club focuses on work by Latin American writers. The meetings are free and open to all. This specific Book Club will be hosted by Mariana Jiménez Arango. For our next meeting, we will gather on Thursday, February 28th at 7 pm to discuss a selection of short stories from Ficciones by Jorge Luis Borges. You will be able to buy this book in either English, French or Spanish.

For some fifty years, in intriguing and ingenious fictions that reimagined the very form of the short story—from his 1935 debut with A Universal History of Iniquity through his immensely influential collections Ficciones and The Aleph, the enigmatic prose poems of The Maker, up to his final work in the 1980s, Shakespeare’s Memory—Jorge Luis Borges returned again and again to his celebrated themes: dreams, duels, labyrinths, mirrors, infinite libraries, the manipulations of chance, gauchos, knife fighters, tigers, and the elusive nature of identity itself. Playfully experimenting with ostensibly subliterary genres, he took the detective story and turned it into metaphysics; he took fantasy writing and made it, with its questioning and reinventing of everyday reality, central to the craft of fiction; he took the literary essay and put it to use reviewing wholly imaginary books.

Jorges Luis Borges was born in Buenos Aires in 1899 and educated in Europe. One of the most widely acclaimed writers of our time, he published many collections of poems, essays and short stories, before his death in Geneva in June 1986.

In 1961 Borges shared the International Publishers' Prize with Samuel Beckett. The Ingram Merrill Foundation granted him its Annual Literary Award in 1966 for his 'outstanding contribution to literature'. In 1971 Columbia University awarded him the first of many degrees of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa that he was to receive from the English-speaking world. In 1971 he received the fifth biennial Jerusalem Prize and in 1973 was given the Alfonso Reyes Prize, one of Mexico's most prestigious cultural awards. In 1980 he shared the Cervantes Prize (the Spanish world's highest literary accolade) with Gerardo Diego. Borges was Director of the Argentine National Library from 1955 until 1973. In a tribute to Borges, Mario Vargas Llosa wrote: 'His is a world of clear, pure, and at the same time unusual ideas... expressed in words of great directness and restraint. [He] was a superb storyteller. One reads most of Borges' tales with the hypnotic interest usually reserved for reading detective fiction ...'

David Bellemare's new series confronts the viewer with a collection that merges personal narrative with broader cultural critique. Drawing on a diverse range of sources — from personal memories and digital cliparts to the iconography of hockey and the rituals of Catholicism — Bellemare recontextualizes familiar imagery within a framework of sharp contrasts and visual dissonance.

Small Paintings that Sell navigates the artist's contemplations on fatherhood, masculinity, and the societal expectations entrenched in Quebec's cultural landscape. Bellemare’s work questions the balance between commercial success and artistic integrity, employing humor and a critical eye to dissect themes of identity, tradition, and the commodification of art.

This exhibition marks an important moment in Bellemare's career, showcasing his ability to dissect and reconstruct the vernacular of everyday life into a dialogue that resonates with both the local and the general popular culture.

About the artist:

David Bellemare is an MFA candidate at Concordia University in painting and drawing. His recent exhibitions include Blastover at Galerie Cache (MTL), Along the Way at TAP Art Space (MTL) and The Patriot at O’Flaherty’s (NYC). He lives and works in Montreal.

Sweet Dreams offers a spellbinding incursion into the intimate worlds of these artists. Taking a sensitive look at everything that surrounds them, they transpose their perceptions and imagination pictorially with virtuosity, though painting, collage, printmaking and drawing. Their equivocal, imaginative creations are only partially revealed, always retaining a large element of mystery. Together, the artists weave an ambiguous narrative marked bby a tension between the hidden and the revealed.

"Ce tableau se tient"

On imagine d’emblée la posture de celui qui s’exprime ainsi devant une œuvre. Les bras croisés, le poid du corps reposant sur une jambe en retrait, la tête légèrement penchée vers l’arrière. Il enligne avec ces quelques mots toutes les dimensions de l’objet - forme, contenu, et message - sur une certitude qui clôt, selon lui, la question.


Or, effectivement, les tableaux de David Gagnon se tiennent; mais en se tenant eux-mêmes, ils ne tiennent, pour ainsi dire, qu’en peu de choses. Ce sont des sortes de porte-à-faux d'une métaphysique avare, ouverte sur un théâtre de la pénombre où se joue une scène intime, presque mystique, évoquant les jeux d’enfants.


Quand parmi les décombres de la scénographie en chantier, nous découvrons un regard qui répond au nôtre, nous sentons bien que ce ne sont pas des yeux complices qui nous observent. Ils semblent nous dire: “quel besoin avons-nous de vous?” ou ”Tout cela ne vous concerne pas!



Et lorsque toutes les certitudes initiales se seront effondrées, il ne restera plus rien du ton présomptif de notre exergue. Ou n’est-ce en réalité que le début?



"This painting holds up!"

It's easy to imagine the demeanour of someone who utters these words in front of a work of art. Arms crossed, body weight resting on a receding leg, head tilted slightly backwards. With these few words, he aligns all the object's dimensions - form, content and message - with a certainty that, in his view, puts the matter to rest.


And indeed, David Gagnon's paintings do hold up, but by holding themselves up, they hold up little else. They are a kind of porte-à-faux, a metaphysics of frugality, openings unto a theatre of penumbra where an intimate, almost mystical scene that evokes childhood games is played out.


When, amidst the rubble of an in-progress scenography, we discover a gaze that returns to our own, we sense that these eyes observing us are not complicit. They seem to say: “What need do we have of you?” “None of this is of your concern!”


In the end, when all the initial certainties have finally melted away, nothing will be left of our epigraph's presumptuous tone. Or is it really just the beginning?

Sashiko, which translates as "little stabs," is a traditional Japanese hand-sewing technique that dates back centuries. More than just a method of mending and strengthening the fabric, in modern times, it also reflects the Japanese idea of "mottainai," which means waste not, want not.

>> In this beginner's workshop, you will explore a range of sashiko and hand-sewing methods, learn how to apply patches in a unique way, weave both strengthening and decorative sashiko stitches into your fabric, and master efficient hand-sewing using the sashiko approach. You'll be equipped with the skills to breathe new life into well-loved garments, giving them a distinct flair!

Momus Talks presents artist Joseph Tisiga and critic Merray Gerges in conversation.

This talk will be situated within Tisiga’s current solo exhibition “It was God the whole time,” on view at Bradley Ertaskiran in Montreal on Saturday March 2, 14:00-15:00.

Joseph Tisiga’s work is informed by global histories of colonial violence and witnessing the ongoing dispossession of Indigenous peoples. He begins with fact, then cocoons it with fiction. Doubles dance, surfaces deceive. He cloaks archeological and totemic forms in connotations and allusions, creating a pictorial and psychic plane in which mythologies morph.

The worlds Tisiga creates provoke these questions: What is fabulation’s role in the face of colonial violence? Could fabulation become a tool in the production of a new political reality? And could it liberate marginalized artists from the moral imperative to bear witness?

Tisiga and Gerges, who serves as an Associate Editor for Momus, have been in ongoing dialogue for over a decade, since meeting at Nova Scotia College of Art & Design.

Salima Punjani is a multi-sensory artist whose work is rooted in relational aesthetics. Central to her creations is the aspiration to craft environments that foster receptivity and connection. Keep in Touch, présenté actuellement au Circa, est un hommage à l’œuvre dramaturgique de Larry Tremblay et constitue le chapitre 2 de ce projet.

Cette démonstration pratique vous permettra de comprendre la méthode d'impression en relief et la possibilité d'imprimer votre propre œuvre d'art. Martin discutera de la sécurité et de l'esthétique et vous obtiendrez un bloc d'impression, des outils de sculpture, du papier à dessin, un crayon et du papier qui lui serviront à réaliser votre œuvre. Vous pouvez participer à cette activité n'importe quand entre 17h et 22h. Nous acceptons les dons pour l'activité.

Martin Akwiranoron Loft est né et a grandi à Kahnawake, en territoire Mohawk. Il est un artiste professionnel depuis plus de 30 ans. Il est photographe, graveur et artisan. Il est également membre fondateur de l’Association des photographes Inuits et Indiens (NIIPA, 1985-2000), une organisation d’artistes autochtones influents qui a présenté “Visions”, la première conférence internationale et exposition itinérante autochtone. Loft a exposé ses photographies, son artisanat traditionnel et ses gravures à l’échelle nationale et internationale, notamment au Musée national des Indiens d’Amérique, au Musée des civilisations, au Musée royal de l’Ontario, au Musée indien Iroquois, au Musée Mashantucket Pequot, au Musée McCord et au Centre national d’art et d’exposition de la République fédérale d’Allemagne, qui a récemment accueilli l’exposition On the Paths of Iroquois.

Daphne est un centre d’art autochtone autogéré sans but lucratif voué à la promotion d’artistes autochtones émergent·e·s, à mi-carrière et réputé·e·s grâce à des expositions et de la programmation connexe, des ateliers, des résidences et des projets de commissariat. daphne favorise une culture de paix qui se nourrit d’échanges critiques et respectueux avec nos pairs et nos publics, qu’ils soient autochtones ou allochtones.

L’installation reproduit une salle de répétition où Tiravanija et ses ami·e·s se retrouvaient pour jouer de la musique.

“The Plateaux of Mirror is an evening of sonic and musical performances organized in conjunction with the exhibition “Rirkrit Tiravanija: JOUEZ/PLAY,” as part of Nuit blanche à Montréal’s 21st edition.

People seeking out a moment of rest and introspection are invited to discover ambient and drone performances presented continuously in Rirkrit Tiravanija’s artwork “untitled 1996 (rehearsal studio no. 6).” This installation recreates a rehearsal room where Tiravanija and his friends would meet up to play music.

For the occasion, the gallery that hosts the artwork will become a cocoon where the audience can drift off and nap. Sonic landscapes, snacks, and herbal tea will be provided. We invite you to bring pillows, blankets, and any comfy accessories you like.

Le Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal (MBAM) et Aire commune sont heureux d’accueillir la soirée Composite #38 le 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶 𝟮𝟬 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 au Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal (MBAM).

COMPOSITE est un rendez-vous trimestriel de réseautage dédié à la créativité numérique. Il est né d’une initiative du Conseil des arts de Montréal, et est coordonné par MAPP_MTL en collaboration avec les acteurs importants du numérique montréalais. Cet événement a pour objectif de créer un espace de rencontre récurrent entre le milieu de l’art et de l’industrie du secteur numérique, en incitant la rencontre et la pollinisation entre créateur·rice·s, centres d’artistes, organismes, entreprises et professionnel·le·s du numérique.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) and Aire commune are delighted to host Composite #38 on 𝘄𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝟮𝟬, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA).

COMPOSITE is a quarterly networking event dedicated to digital creativity. It was born of an initiative by the Conseil des arts de Montréal, and is coordinated by MAPP_MTL in collaboration with key players in the Montreal digital scene. The aim of this event is to create a recurring meeting place between the art world and the digital industry, encouraging encounters and pollination between creators, artist-run centers, organizations, companies and digital professionals.

Submit your project (ART, RESEARCH, INDUSTRY OR SOCIAL INNOVATION) by filling in this form for a chance to be selected to be presented in a 6-minute Keynote format at this COMPOSITE event on Wednesday, March 20, 2024.

Projects are selected by the COMPOSITE committee and the organizers, based on the quality of the project and the innovation of its approach to digital. Priority is given to emerging players and a diversified representation of project leaders.

Le festival du cinéma immersif est de retour dans la Satosphère.

Dans un dôme entièrement rénové, le SAT Fest 2024 mettra une nouvelle fois à l’honneur les talents émergents et établis de la scène fulldome à travers une programmation inédite de courts métrages immersifs, d’avant-premières, et la présence d’artistes locaux et internationaux. Venez découvrir des créations captivantes qui repoussent les limites de la narration traditionnelle!

Nouveauté cette année, on vous propose un volet professionnel avec des ateliers et des activités axées sur le domaine du Fulldome. L’accès à cette partie du festival nécessite la passe Pro.

Seules les passes festival et pro sont en vente pour le moment (quantité limitée). Les billets individuels seront mis en vente prochainement.

The festival of immersive cinema returns to the Satosphere.

In a completely renovated dome, SAT Fest 2024 will once again showcase emerging and established talent from the fulldome scene, with a never-before-seen program of immersive short films, previews, and the presence of local and international artists. Come and discover captivating creations that push the boundaries of traditional storytelling!

New this year, we’re offering a professional section with workshops and activities focused on the Fulldome field. Access to this part of the festival requires a Pro pass.

Only festival and pro passes are on sale at the moment (limited quantity). Individual tickets will go on sale shortly.

On va écouter des vieilles cassettes et essayer de diagnostiquer vos problèmes d'appareils qui font du bruit. Le but étant de vous fournir les outils et connaissances nécessaires pour réparer les trucs vous-même, on peut aussi vous donner un coup de main à la hauteur de nos capacités.

For almost a dozen years now, Orkestar Kriminal has created daring arrangements of old underworld ballads in 12 different languages, telling the tales of impoverished peoples the world over, driven to a life of crime. With their unique instrumentation (upright bass, trombone, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, musical saw, bouzouki, baglamas, electric surf guitar, drums, piccolo, flute, violin, accordion, organ, voice) and a refreshing gender-mashup in their musicianship, Orkestar Kriminal has arranged some of the world’s long-forgotten criminal ballads with all the fervour and gusto that they could muster. After continuous touring and a multitude of festival performances, the biggest criminal punks in world music released Razlomanye Ryobra in 2020, hitting the #1 spot on the Earshot “National International” charts. Orkestar Kriminal is now fired-up with "Originali", their first ever all-originals album produced by Grammy award-winning Producer-Engineer: Mark Lawson, out March 15th, 2024 on CPL-Music.

Along with their original Yiddish, Greek and Spanish compositions, Orkestar Kriminal worked extensively with native-speaking linguistic collaborators from all over the world to compose lyrics in Hindi, Mixteco, Arabic, Polish, Bosnian and Norwegian Bokmål. With all these nuanced, stylized arrangements, and 9 different languages featured, "Originali" is the band's most ambitious album yet. Their bittersweet melodies are delightfully infectious, so for Orkestar Kriminal, there is no turning back. Drenched in expression, celebrated and improvised, this is "cabaret noir" at its finest!
