The session is open to anybody willing to draw. So if you would like to join us, rendez-vous around 5:50 PM in the Bernard Landry room. No registration needed. You'll easily find the room.

Please note that for now on the session will be charged 10$/Person cash. The payment is during the break at around 7:30 PM. We don't proceed Interac transfer

Presented by Librairie Drawn and Quarterly, the Zine Club welcomes anyone 16+ who wants to draw and craft, get to know other artists, practice and work on their personal project. There is no need to have previous knowledge to be able to join the club. Registration is not required, we will be accepting everybody until room capacity (30-40 people).

Hosted by artist and D&Q's bookseller Mélina, this meeting will be held on Monday April 29th, from 7pm to 9pm, on 176 rue Bernard O.

[EN] As part of their ongoing programming of Palestine solidarity events, the Art History Decolonial Action Group (AHDAG), the Feminist Media Studio, Regards Palestiniens, and the Doc-Inter PhD Program, are collaborating to host a free screening of Inas Halabi's feature film We No Longer Prefer Mountains (2023). The screening will be followed by a discussion with artist and filmmaker Inas Halabi, who will join us on Zoom, moderated by Claire Begbie and Varda Nisar. Join us at Concordia on 30 April for a rare opportunity to watch this film, hear Inas Halabi present her work, and reflect collectively on the intersections of landscape, environment, systems of power and control, and the construction of national identities and narratives.

WE NO LONGER PREFER MOUNTAINS (2023) takes place in the Druze town of Dalyet el Carmel, in northern Palestine, pulling the viewer into a surreal world of geographic isolation, shrouded mysticism and a locale shaped by co-optation, coercion, and control. Weaving together intimate engagements with members of the community, in shared domestic spaces and outdoor environments, the film sets out to explore how the inner politics of the Druze have been controlled and reshaped as a result of the establishment of Israel in 1948. The film is informed by the landscape theory (fûkeiron), a Japanese Avant Garde film movement in the 60s whereby the filmmakers posited that filming the everyday surroundings reveal the oppressive and repressively isolating landscapes and the powers at play.

Inas Halabi (b.1988, Palestine) is an Artist/Filmmaker. Her practice is concerned with how social and political forms of power are manifested and the impact that overlooked or suppressed histories have on contemporary life. Recent exhibitions and screenings include Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival (2023), de Appel Amsterdam (2023), Showroom London (2022), Europalia Festival, Brussels (2021), Silent Green Betonhalle, Berlin (2021); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2020); and Film at Lincoln Center, USA (2020). She lives and works between Palestine and the Netherlands.

Claire Begbie is a member of Regards Palestiniens and a PhD student in Film and Moving Image Studies at Concordia University. Her research looks at the history of Palestine in Arab and transnational cinema.

Varda Nisar is a member of AHDAG, a mother, a daughter, and a sister. She is also a PhD candidate in Art History at Concordia. Her work diverges in several directions, including art education and community outreach, research, and writing.

What can we learn from “the ordinary”? The varied work of architect Maxwell M. Kalman (1906–2009) poses this question in the context of Montreal’s urban landscape.



On Thursday, May 2, please join us for an opening reception to celebrate the Museum of Jewish Montreal's first heritage exhibition at our Mile End home, Maxwell Kalman: Lessons from the Ordinary. This display is a photographic retrospective of the career of Maxwell M. Kalman, who designed buildings for Montreal's working class, affluent families, as well as Jewish businesses and institutions that still stand proudly today.



To reflect Kalman's presence in our city's built environment, our team has created an interactive map where guests are welcome to explore his buildings on their own, several of which are within walking distance from the Museum.



Initially conceived for presentation at McGill University's School of Architecture in 2006, we are thrilled to be re-staging this exhibition to new eyes, with materials on loan from the Alex Dworkin Canadian Jewish Archives.



Following some remarks from the Museum's team, guests are welcome to explore the exhibition, as well as meet the original curators and archivists behind the 2006 exhibition.



Refreshments (paid by card) will be available. Please note that pre-registration is required for all who with to attend.

In the summer of 1952, John Cage organized a collaborative theater event in the dining hall at Black Mountain College. The performance, which later came to be known as “Theater Piece No. 1,” is widely regarded as the first Happening. Accounts of the event vary. According to Cunningham, “David Tudor played the piano, M.C. Richards and Charles Olson read poetry, Robert Rauschenberg’s white paintings were on the ceiling, Rauschenberg himself played records, and Cage talked. I danced…The audience was seated in the middle of the playing area, facing each other, the chairs were arranged on diagonals, and the spectators unable to see directly everything that was happening. There was a dog which chased me around the space as I danced. Nothing was intended to be other than it was, a complexity of events that the spectators could deal with as each chose.”

C’est Noël 1940, et John Cabal, habitant d’Everytown, craint que la guerre ne soit imminente. Lorsqu’elle éclate, la guerre dure 30 ans, détruisant la ville et ouvrant la voie à une nouvelle ère sombre de pestes et de petits despotes. Mais l’espoir renaît sous la forme de Wings Over the World, un groupe de scientifiques et de penseurs pacifistes dirigé par Cabal. Leur rêve est de construire une société utopique sur les ruines de l’ancienne. Mais ils devront d’abord renverser le dernier tyran en place.

Sorti en 1936, Things to Come, adapté par H.G. Wells de son propre roman de science-fiction de 1933 The Shape of Things to Come, était la production la plus ambitieuse de la London Films de Korda à ce jour, et a cimenté sa réputation de produire des drames intelligents à une échelle épique.

La conception du film a constitué l’un des plus grands défis, en particulier la représentation du fabuleux Everytown du futur. Wells a approché l’artiste Fernand Léger, l’architecte Le Corbusier et la légende du Bauhaus László Moholy-Nagy. L’un des éléments les plus impressionnants du film est constitué par les décors miniatures méticuleusement fabriqués. C’est ce qui nous a incités à faire appel à une conférencière au talent fascinant et hautement spécialisé.

Conférencière invitée : Marina Totino est une artiste multidisciplinaire qui crée des mondes miniatures captivants qui brouillent les frontières entre les rêves et la réalité. Avec une touche ludique, son travail vous invite à explorer des dioramas surréalistes et des espaces miniatures complexes qui vous emmènent dans un voyage fantaisiste à travers des créations originales appelées “Marina Minis”. Elle a commencé son parcours cinématographique au collège, puis à l’école de cinéma Mel Hoppenheim de l’Université Concordia. Tombée amoureuse de la narration, elle a mis ses talents au service de l’industrie du cinéma pendant sept ans, contribuant à des longs métrages, des émissions de télévision et des publicités. La présentation qu’elle fera à l’occasion de cet événement comprendra une exposition de quelques-unes de ses brillantes miniatures.

It’s Christmas 1940, and Everytown resident John Cabal fears that war is imminent. When it breaks out, the war lasts 30 years, destroying the city and ushering in a new dark age of plagues and petty despots. But there is hope in the form of Wings Over the World, a group of pacifist scientists and thinkers lead by Cabal. Their dream is to build a utopian society on the ruins of the old. But first they’ll have to unseat the latest ruling tyrant.

Released in 1936, THINGS TO COME, adapted by H.G. Wells from his own 1933 science fiction novel The Shape of Things to Come, was the most ambitious production to date from Korda’s London Films, and cemented its reputation for producing intelligent drama on an epic scale.

It was an ambitious project with a vast scope – covering a century of future history – and a scale to match: enormous sets, particularly in the sequences set in 2036, thousands of extras, and imaginative design and editing. Several of the performances are equally impressive, notably Raymond Massey as the messianic Cabal and Ralph Richardson as the thuggish tyrant ‘Boss’, a role he modelled explicitly on Mussolini.

The film offered a very different vision of the future to Fritz Lang’s 1926 classic Metropolis, to which it was inevitably compared; Wells was scathing in his criticism of Lang’s film, which offered a portrait of a world enslaved by science. By contrast, Wells saw science as a promise of mankind’s salvation.

The design of the film presented one of the greatest challenges, particularly the representation of the fabulous Everytown of the future. Wells approached artist Fernand Léger, architect Le Corbusier and Bauhaus legend László Moholy-Nagy. One of the film’s more impressive elements is the meticulously-crafted miniature sets. This prompted us to invite a guest speaker with a highly-specialized and fascinating talent.

Guest speaker: Marina Totino is a multidisciplinary artist who crafts captivating miniature worlds that blur the lines between dreams and reality. With a playful touch, her work invites you to explore surreal dioramas and intricately designed miniature spaces that take you on a whimsical journey through fantastical creations as “Marina Minis”. She embarked on her cinematic journey in college, and then at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema at Concordia University. Falling in love with storytelling, for seven years she lent her talents to the film industry, contributing to feature films, television shows, and commercials. Her presentation for this event will feature a display of some of her brilliant miniature work.

Sofian Audry: Morphoses

Following his 10 days residency at Milieux in collaboration with Hexagram, Sofian will answer question about Morphoses, a project co-developed with Rosalie D. Gagné. Morphoses is an artificial life installation featuring the adaptive behaviors of three autonomous robotic balls. 

Inspired by the phenomenology of living systems, Morphoses proposes a poetic experience of machine learning, centered on the establishment of an intimate relationship between human and non-human life forms.

The original Y2K legends NINA SKY are making a pit stop in Montreal on their 20th anniversary tour. From their timeless hits "Move Ya Body" & “Oye Mi Canto” to their recent tracks and international DJ sets, your favorite twins are sure to make your corazón race and your culo move. Mayday is the third LP by Montreal-based artist, Myriam Gendron. It follows her earlier, critically acclaimed albums, Not So Deep As A Well (2014) and Ma délire –Songs of love, lost & found (2021). Prior to her debut album, Myriam’s primary musical focus was busking in Paris Metro stations, performing the songs of Leonard Cohen and others, accompanying herself on guitar. Through her day job, working at a bookstore, Myriam discovered the poems of American writer, Dorothy Parker, who was better known for her cutting wit than her verse. Inspired by Parker’s words, Myriam wrote music to accompany a suite of them, then recorded the results in her bedroom. These very recordings were issued as her debut LP, and continue to delight listeners who discover them, with their freshness, clarity and humor. Writing in Uncut, Tyler Wilcox described Not So Deep As A Well as, “one of those out-of-nowhere LPs that was so captivating, you couldn’t help raving about it to anyone who would listen.”

After a hiatus, during which she became a mother, Myriam began exploring the complex folk traditions of Quebec, and recorded the 2LP, Ma délire. This project was begun while she was on a sponsored creative retreat in rural Quebec with her young daughter. Myriam had been inspired by the ways in which traditional songs from disparate cultures embrace parallel archetypes. The resulting album (part of which was actually recorded on the fly during this retreat) combines traditional and original lyrics (largely in French) with arrangements that make space for avant-garde musical interludes by such players as guitarist Bill Nace (Body/Head) and percussionist Chris Corsano. Like her debut, Ma délire has been received rhapsodically. In his review for Foxy Digitalis, Brad Rose writes the album, “is a complete and total triumph. There aren’t many artists who understand and can harness the immortal spirit that flows through traditional music like Myriam Gendron. For all her talents as a songwriter, guitarist, and singer, this is her greatest gift.”

Mayday presents an even more syncretic fusion of the elements Myriam uses to create her sound. Most of the songs are original, sung in both English and French, and they blend traditional and avant elements with abandon. She is often accompanied on this album by the guitarist Marisa Anderson and drummer Jim White (Dirty Three), whose work provides a quietly aggressive sort of free-rock base. Additional players this time include Montreal bassist Cédric Dind-Lavoie (a fellow fan of trad/avant dynamism), Bill Nace and saxophonist Zoh Amba (whose horn actually gets the final “word”). Mayday is a thoroughly thrilling effort that manages to create new vistas of sound while maintaining a feel that is both intimate and familiar.

Myriam has privately described the mood of Mayday as dark, in part due to the fact it was assembled after her mother’s passing, but she is always capable of balancing and blending emotional content in a way that makes it ultimately hopeful. The music here certainly possesses a richly serious tone, but Myriam Gendron (like Leonard Cohen) is able to infuse her darkness with a subtle, powerful light that reminds us that even the most pitch-black night is but a transitional state. Beautiful work.

Conor Kerr is a Métis/Ukrainian writer living in Edmonton. A member of the Métis Nation of Alberta, he is descended from the Lac Ste. Anne Metis and the Papaschase Cree Nation. His Ukrainian family are settlers in Treaty 4 and 6 territories in Saskatchewan. He grew up in Saskatoon, Edmonton, and other prairie towns and cities. In 2022 he was named one of CBC’s Writers to Watch. He is the author of the poetry collections An Explosion of Feathers and Old Gods, as well as the novel Avenue of Champions, which was shortlisted for the Amazon Canada First Novel Award, longlisted for the 2022 Giller Prize and won the 2022 ReLIT award. Conor is an Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta where he teaches creative writing.

Parking is on the street with parking meters or in a lot on Ethyl a couple blocks away. If you are taking public transit, then Metro de l'Eglise is down the street. The venue is between Wellington Street and Verdun Avenue.
