Join us for author Florence Ashley's Montreal launch of their book Gender/Fucking. The author and researcher will be in discussion with Florence Chenel. The event will consist of a discussion followed by a Q&A with the public and a book signing.

A little more about the book: Taking the idea of intellectual masturbation a little too literally, Florence Ashley draws on their experiences as a transfeminist activist, academic and slut to question what it means to live in a gendered body in our difficult but sometimes loving world. With personal essays on the fetishization of trans bodies, the healing of surgery and the loss of hope, Florence's collection celebrates the queer messiness of gender and identity.

About the author: Florence Ashley (they/them/that bitch) is a transfeminine professor of law and bioethics. A prolific transdisciplinary researcher, Florence has mesmerized many academic fields with their incisive style and irreverent footnotes. Their first book was more boringly titled Banning Transgender Conversion Practices: A Legal and Policy Analysis. When not engaged in research or teaching, Florence enjoys speaking French, oversharing on social media, and getting railed in a sundress.

Atelier participatif de céramique - Amber Goveas et Laura Leong
— Amber Goveas et Laura Leong invitent les participant·e·s de la communauté d'articule à créer un ou plusieurs carreaux de céramique pour contribuer à une tapisserie d'argile unique construite collectivement. L'argile, récupérée et recyclée à partir de divers produits en pierre disponibles dans le commerce, sera cuite sans être émaillée afin de mettre en valeur ses différentes nuances allant des beiges aux rouges et aux bruns profonds. Après l'atelier, cette œuvre collective sera installée à l'extérieur d'articule.

Performance immersive - Marcella França
— Marcella França travaille sur la volatilité de l'eau et ses implications sociopolitiques et émotionnelles. Dans sa nouvelle performance pour articule, inspirée par Monochrome IX, elle installera de longs morceaux de papier entre les murs et le sol, chacun surmonté d'une sculpture de glace myocardique. Tandis qu'elle écrit de sombres statistiques sur le papier, ces cœurs gelés de sang végétal se dissolvent, laissant derrière une traces visuelle. Cela représente la douleur et la violence du système patriarcal et colonial oppressif, qu'elle transforme en une installation artistique. Son travail mettra en lumière les taux alarmants de meurtres d'activistes écologistes, de violences LGBTQIA+ et de féminicides au Brésil, ainsi que l'impact sur les femmes et les enfants dans les conflits à travers le monde.

𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢 𝟏𝟓 𝐣𝐮𝐢𝐧 - 𝟏𝟔𝐡 - 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐁𝐢𝐧𝐝
Atelier participatif de nouage de nœuds chinois - Allegra Hu
— Inspirés par l'art ancien de la fabrication de nœuds chinois, les participant·e·s sont invité·e·s à contribuer à une tapisserie de nœuds, interconnectés avec différentes couleurs, différents styles et une touche personnelle. L'artiste sera là pour faciliter la fabrication des nœuds, en encourageant les gens à expérimenter, à collaborer les uns avec les autres pour que les nœuds s'assemblent, et à ne pas chercher à obtenir un produit fini parfait. Cette œuvre d'art interactive explore l'acte de reconstruire ce qui a été perdu et défait dans les communautés diasporiques, et la manière dont le processus peut ouvrir de nouvelles voies de connexion. Les participants devront collaborer les uns avec les autres pour trouver la meilleure façon d'ajouter des éléments à la tapisserie sans interrompre le travail des autres. Bien que les participant·e·s puissent créer n'importe quel type de nœud, l'artiste fournira un zine d'instruction sur la fabrication de nœuds chinois afin que les participant·e·s puissent ressentir ce que c'est que d'apprendre soi-même un métier culturellement significatif et de s'appuyer les unes sur les autres pour se soutenir. L'œuvre finale englobera le processus souvent désordonné et expérimental qu'est l'apprentissage lorsqu'il n'y a plus personne pour nous enseigner.

Présentation et discussion - Super Boat People
— Pour Montréal Monochrome, le collectif propose une présentation-discussion invitant à « défaire » l’idée répandue selon laquelle les communautés réfugiées, particulièrement celles issues des guerres indochinoises (ou guerre du Vietnam), exercent intentionnellement un « silence » ou un « oubli » face à leur passé. En se basant sur des implications et recherches antérieures, des écrits en cours, et surtout l’expérience des ateliers, le collectif exposera le régime ou système narratif sous-jacent à ces discours de silence et d’oubli, et expliquera en quoi le projet contribue à un travail de mémoire alternatif et pertinent. La présentation mettra également la table pour l’exposition issue du projet, dont le vernissage aura lieu le 22 juin.

Participatory ceramics workshop - Amber Goveas and Laura Leong
— Amber Goveas and Laura Leong invite participants from articule’s community to create one or more ceramic tiles to contribute to a single collectively built clay tapestry. The clay, recovered and recycled from various commercially available stonewares, will be fired unglazed to feature their various shades ranging from beiges, to reds and deep browns and following the workshop this collectively created work will be installed outside articule.

Immersive Performance - Marcella França
— Marcella França has been working with water's volatility and its socio-political and emotional implications. In her new performance for articule, inspired by Monochrome IX, she will install long pieces of paper from the walls to the floor, each topped with a myocardial ice sculpture. As she writes sad statistical numbers on the paper, these frozen plant blood hearts will dissolve, leaving visual trails. This represents the pain and violence from the oppressive patriarchal and colonial system, transforming it into an art installation. Her work will highlight Brazil's alarming rates of land activist murders, LGBTQIA+ violence, and femicides, as well as the impact on women and children in conflicts around the world.

Participatory Chinese knot-tying workshop - Allegra Hu
— Inspired by the ancient art of Chinese knot making, participants are invited to contribute to a tapestry of knots, interconnected with different colors, styles, and personal touch. The artist will be there to facilitate the knot making, encouraging folks to experiment, collaborate with each other to make the knots flow together, and avoid striving for a perfected finished product. This interactive art piece explores the act of rebuilding what has been lost and undone in diasporic communities, and how the process can bridge new pathways for connection. Participants will have to collaborate with each other to figure out the best way to add to the tapestry without disrupting others from working. Although participants can contribute any type of knot they wish, the artist will provide an instructional Chinese knot-making zine so that participants can feel what it's like to teach themselves a culturally-significant craft, and lean on each other for support. The finished piece will encompass the often messy and experimental process that is learning when there is no one left to teach us.

Chaque nouvelle technologie a engendré un mouvement artistique contemporain de pointe qui utilise et repense les nouveaux outils, tout en abordant les questions sociales, intellectuelles et esthétiques que la technologie provoque. Il y a toujours un décalage entre l'adoption des nouvelles technologies par les artistes et leur acceptation par les institutions artistiques et les collectionneurs. Pourquoi certains collectionneurs sont-ils moins attirés par l'art numérique et comment pouvons-nous changer cela ? Comment, par exemple, atténuer l'inquiétude concernant l'entretien et la longévité des œuvres ? Où sont les nouveaux collectionneurs - et pourquoi ? Comment stimuler les marchés là où ils n'existent pas encore ?

ROUND TABLE 1: Curating Immersion

As artists embrace immersive technologies, new and exciting art forms are emerging. In this panel, curators, and key voices in the field of digital art curation, ​​will discuss best practices for curating and showcasing art in virtual and augmented spaces. How do we distinguish between commercial immersion and immersion that belongs in the context of contemporary art? How can we leverage cutting-edge platforms to offer optimal conditions for presenting art of the current moment? How should we promote and mediate immersive art to engage new and existing audiences?

ROUND TABLE 2: The Digital Art Market: Challenges And Opportunities

Every new technology has spawned a cutting edge contemporary art movement that uses and rethinks the novel tools, while also addressing the social, intellectual and aesthetic questions the technology provokes. There is always a lag between artists’ adoption of new technology and its acceptance by art institutions and collectors. Why are some collectors less attracted to digital art and how can we change this? How, for example, can we alleviate anxiety about the maintenance and longevity of works? Where are the new collectors - and why? How can we stimulate markets where they don’t yet exist?

MIAN:
Since 2007, MIAN has been an event that facilitates professional exchanges between major players in the digital art and cultural ecosystem on an international scale. Through round tables, performances and networking, the MIAN brings together producers and curators from all over the world to discuss issues linked to the future of digital art and the place new technologies hold in the production and promotion of contemporary digital art.

Pia Baltazar est compositrice intermedia, chercheuse indisciplinaire et directrice de la recherche-création à la Société des Arts Technologiques de Montréal (Québec, Canada).
Sa démarche de recherche artistique et technologique se développe depuis plus de vingt ans à l’intersection du design interactif et de la production artistique. Elle s’intéresse tout particulièrement aux possibilités créatives des rencontres entre les sens et à l'implication du corps et du geste dans le processus de création.

Nested resonators
Pia Baltazar propose une performance in-situ jouant des rencontres et collisions entre divers espaces résonants et un ensemble de cordes, corps et surfaces vibrantes. Les phénomènes sonores qui en résultent sont tissés dans un écheveau de boucles de rétroaction : ils sont enregistrés, transformés, et réinjectés dans la chaîne de vibrateurs et résonateurs à l’aide d’un dispositif audionumérique opéré en direct. À travers tout ceci elle cherche à donner à entendre des architextures sonores éphémères, en mutation constante entre émergence, formation et effondrement

Join us for a fun dive into ‘wild fermentation’ where we’ll go over three simple methods for making your own herbal sodas.

This workshop will equip you with the skills to experiment throughout the rest of summer and fall harvest seasons to make unique and tasty beverages that are also yummy remedies.


We'll brew two different kinds of wild soda starters - the wild honey method and ginger bug method - as we discuss different blooms and herbs you may want to experiment with in the garden and kitchen.

We’ll do this while also tasting a few wild sodas and enjoy some sun-brewed herbal lemonade as a treat.

A workshop zine will be given to all participants to take home and turn into their own wild soda recipe book.

Please bring two jars if you can - 500ml each (250ml can also work). We will have extras.

We ask that folks wear a mask during the portions of the workshop without tasting. This is an accessibility measure and we will have some masks available on site for folks if needed.

The space will have open windows (weather permitting), fans, AC and 1-2 hepa filters working.

Ici et Là | Here and Now is an immersive audio installation that is experienced with the ECHOES sound mapping device for smartphone. While walking through Le Champs des Possibles, an array of sonic zones (triggered by gps) will entice you to listen more deeply or even to sing along! The piece will be up indefinitely. At 14h on June 22nd be part of the communal experience led by Kathy Kennedy and special surprise guests. There are no limits on the number of participants.

Super Boat People mène depuis l'automne 2023 le projet "Ce qui nous traverse : ateliers d'histoire familiale", en collaboration avec articule et le Centre d’histoire orale et de récits numérisés de l’Université Concordia (CHORN). L'exposition "Ce qui nous traverse" est le fruit de ce projet qui a permis à une cohorte d’une quinzaine de participant.e.s d'origine cambodgienne, vietnamienne et laotienne, dont les familles ont vécu la guerre et le refuge, de se réapproprier leur histoire familiale.

Lors de dix ateliers animés par divers documentaristes et artistes de ces communautés, les participant.e.s ont approfondi les parcours et les expériences de leurs familles et d'eux-mêmes. L’exposition rassemble réflexions personnelles, archives, œuvres artistiques et objets créés durant ce processus.

Since Fall 2023, Super Boat People has been running the "What Travels Through Us: Family History Workshops" project, in collaboration with articule and Concordia University's Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling. The What Travels Through Us exhibition is the fruit of this project, which enabled a cohort of fifteen participants of Cambodian, Vietnamese and Laotian origin, whose families had experienced war and refuge, to reappropriate their family history.

In ten sessions led by documentary filmmakers and artists from these communities, participants delved deeper into the journeys and experiences of their families and themselves. The exhibition brings together personal reflections, archives, artworks and objects created during this process.

Join us for the opening of the exhibition on June 22 at articule, with the program, from 2:30 p.m.:
- 2:30 p.m.: Round table on the transmission of family histories with Rémy Chhem and Marie-Ève ​​Samson (Super Boat People), Viet Tran (Sticky Rice Magazine) and Zeina Ismail-Allouche (CHORN), moderated by Eva-Loan Ponton-Pham.

I've been working at Cordova for a couple of months now, a cute little cocktail bar/cafe.

It's situated in St Henri, close to the canal/festival sur la canal, and right next to a really lovely park.

It also has a really nice terrace, so I thought it would be a great place to do an event. I'll be working that evening, so I'll come chat a bit when everyone is served.

Notes:
• we're not serving food atm, but there's a great Caribbean place across the street (lloydies) that has several vegan options. I'll talk to the bosses and make sure people who want food can bring something over.
• the amaretto sour is non-vegan, all other drinks are. We have oat milk and decaf for anyone who prefers coffee.
• children and dogs aren't allowed inside the cafe by law. If the weather is nice, they're allowed on the terrace. If it's raining, they'll have to stay at home.
• we normally close at 8, but if it's a super popular event, I'll see if we can stay open til 10.

Zafer Mamilli and Daniel Secunda play the klezmer music of Jewish Eastern Europe, featuring the traditional instrumentation of violin and tsimbl (hammered dulcimer). The repertoire is drawn from 100-year old recordings, manuscripts collected by traveling folklorists, and original compositions, and ranges from mournful violin laments to lively dances, melodies that tell stories of exile and exaltation.
