Abstract

Janet Cardiff will discuss and present excerpts and documentation from specific artworks that illuminate the various approaches and methods of her and her partner George Bures Miller in relation to music and sound.


Biography

Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller are known for their immersive multimedia sound installations and their audio/video walks.They have recently shown at the Tinguely Museum in Basel (2023); Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg, Germnay; Museum of Modern Art in New York (2019); Museum of Contemporary Art in Monterrey, Mexico (2019); Oude Kerk, Amsterdam (2018); 21st Century Museum, Kanazawa, Japan (2017); Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris (2017); ARoS Aarhus Art Museum, Denmark (2015); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2015); Menil Collection, Houston (2015); 19th Biennale of Sydney (2014); the Cloisters, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2013); and Documenta 13, Kassel (2012). In 2020 they were awarded the Wilhelm Lehmbruck prize for sculpture and in 2011 they received Germany’s Käthe Kollwitz Prize. In 2001, Cardiff and Miller represented Canada at the 49th Venice Biennale, for which they received the Premio Speciale and the Benesse Prize. They currently live and work in British Columbia.

La 18e édition du festival arrive à grand pas, toujours regorgeante de vitalité! Mettant de l’avant les oeuvres des créateur.trice.s émergent.e.s, cette édition se démarque par un foisonnement de propositions spectrales et d’exploration d’états altérés, comme autant de d’opportunités de présence à soi même et au monde. Aquatique et enracinée, la programmation propose 13 œuvres comme autant de brèches vers le monde des esprits, célébrant nos héritages et nos élans. Nous sommes impatient.e.s de vous y retrouver et de les découvrir avec vous!

DÉVOILEMENT DE LA PROGRAMMATION
Le dévoilement de la programmation a lieu le jeudi 25 avril 2024 en format 5@7, dans les studios de LA SERRE baignés de lumière! Les festivités auront donc lieu dans le quartier Ahuntsic aux abords du parc Nicolas-Viel, et, si le temps s’y prête, elles se déploieront dans la cour intérieure. Au plaisir de vous y voir, pour célébrer l’arrivée du printemps et cette nouvelle édition!


LA SERRE – ARTS VIVANTS UNVEILS ITS PROGRAM FOR THE 18th EDITION OF THE FESTIVAL

The 18th edition of the festival is just around the corner, still bursting with vitality! Highlighting the work of emerging creators, this year's edition stands out for its abundance of spectral proposals and exploration of altered states, as many opportunities to be present to oneself and to the world. Aquatic and rooted, the program features 13 creations that offer a glimpse into the spirit world, celebrating our heritages and our impulses. We look forward to seeing you there and discovering them with you!

UNVEILING OF THE PROGRAM
The program unveiling will take place in the light-filled studios of LA SERRE, on Thursday, April 25, 2024, in a 5@7 format. The festivities will therefore be taking place in the Ahunstic neighbourhood, near Nicolas-Viel Park, and – if the weather is good – in our inner courtyard. We look forward to seeing you there, to celebrate the arrival of spring and this wonderful 18th edition!

Sous l’étiquette Humidex Records, Errance (Jacob Desjardins) lance son premier album solo qui paraîtra le 25 avril prochain. Ce LP rassemble des pièces composées pour le documentaire "2012/Dans le coeur" et qui prennent vie en marge de celui-ci. "Timbres oblitérés" navigue entre des grondements subtils, des crépitements acouphéniques et des timbres harmonieux, évoquant les multiples récits de corporalités sonores oscillantes.

La soirée de lancement se fera à La Sotterenea, le 25 avril à 19h30 (show 20h) 15$ (NOTAFLOF). Il y aura en plus des perfomances musicales de Philippe Vandal et Joel Lavoie.

Boubé skillfully plays the guitar and drums. He is a singer-songwriter, and his first album recorded in Niger is titled “Issaktan.” His music speaks of peace, friendship, and always inspires a sense of travel. His melodies can be meditative at times, and at other times, they lean towards blues/rock. Some even nickname him the Jimmy Hendrix of the Sahara. It’s up to you to discover the musical universe of Boubé. ▷ SHAHRZAD AND HER LATIN-ORIENTAL BAND | Latin, Oriental (Cuba, Iran, Egypt)Dive into the immersive experience of an artistic fusion, where the enchanting rhythms of Afro-Cuban tradition harmoniously blend with the melodic richness of Oriental music. Founder Shahrzad Sabzehali is driven by an innovative and ambitious artistic vision, aiming to create a harmonious fusion of Afro-Cuban and Oriental musical traditions. Her artistic approach is rooted in innovation, experimentation, communicative energy. ▷ LES TOCHESS | Cumbia (Colombia, Mexico, Cuba) Less Toches is the musical collision of five explosive characters, an unexpected and refreshing big bang of cumbia on the island of Montreal. The eternal magic of the peasant troubadours of the South acquires here a poetic, passionate and amusing air: Less Toches takes its name from a Latin American bird, and a Colombian expression meaning “clumsy”. Humor and trance translate into a fresh and deep interpretation of the peasant and riverside spirit of cumbia and accordion music. The Textile and Materiality Research cluster is excited to announce an upcoming event where participants will learn the art of bookbinding. In this engaging workshop, attendees will have the opportunity to explore fundamental bookbinding techniques applicable to both paper and textile materials. The session will commence with an overview of various techniques through samples and references, followed by hands-on creation of personalized books. Depending on group size and interest, participants will be introduced to 3-4 binding methods including saddle stitch, pamphlet stitch, Japanese stab binding, interlocking, x-stitch, and variations of one-page zines.While materials and tools will be provided, attendees are encouraged to bring their own supplies from the suggested list below. Playing a Tenses set April 27th at Brasserie Beaubien for a rare @strangewavesfest event in town (Hamilton’s finest ppl) with experimental legends LOLINA (@relaxinrecords )(fka Inga Copeland), MAN MADE HILL (@randy_ontario ) and PLEASE (@booboobubble )! Léon (@muemusique ) took a series of cool pictures for this new project and here’s one to help the algorithm 👽 also, i have music coming up soon in the world and I’ll have more to share, so I will probably use another cool blue picture for the occasion, blue is this projects color maybe.

The Puerto Rican performance collective, Poncili Creación, will be featured in a two-part event on April 25 and 27, positioning improvisation with sound, movement and giant puppetry manipulation as a means to explore creative forms of resistance and community collaboration.

This program is co-organized by the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture (CISSC) at Concordia University and the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery.
